hello, i'm about to send out the email for the first week of reading Hyperscale by @parismarx.com if you haven't got the book yet, you still have time to buy it - this week we'll be reading the introduction & chapter 1, so it'll be a pretty low-key week of reading.

i think this accompanying blog post is interesting. i think @bennjordan.bsky.social is walking a fine line here; i have mixed feelings, but i agree about the overarching observation. to put a finer point on it, i feel like this growing atmosphere of decontextualized scrutiny is getting inhospitable.

i have 2 questions that i don't see often (& would be grateful for pointers/links) 1. i'd really like to know how solid a grasp teachers have on the policies of systems they're uploading content to. specifically, what are the privacy policies of whatever image generator you're uploading kids' pics

i know kids make collages where they'll cut out a picture of their face and put it on someone else's body and that's not like sending them spiraling, but i think looking at a pic of your face sloppily pasted on schwarzenegger's body is different from seeing a photorealistic pic of yourself aged up.

like "hey grok make me look grown up like clavicular" seems bad for about a hundred or a thousand reasons that i don't think i have the character space to unpack here. also, i should be writing an entirely different thing right now.

2. my anecdotal sense is that seeing a picture of yourself substantially digitally altered can be alienating. i don't know very much about research on how it affects or (e.g. maybe desensitizes) kids to see a pic of themselves digitally altered or generated, and i'd like to have more than intuition.

also, maybe i'm just like conservative about this, but i feel like socially we should have a longer conversation about normalizing, among children, the experience of having images of them manipulated. i'm not sure how to explain it more than that, and hey maybe i'm wrong about this. i'm not a parent

i know there are local models. i know schools can contract w/tech co's that (nominally) follow relevant privacy laws. if you agree that those are not frivolous, then presumably you agree that if a teacher uses something *unapproved*, that's pretty serious, right? like, using grok would be bad, yeah?

seeing an ad about how we spend billions to underwrite israel's genocide and how that's impacting us in the grocery store is effective, and i don't mean to diminish it; but it makes me feel like i will not live to see a day when we call it wrong not because it's a racket, but because it's genocide.

again i don't want to diminish the ad. it's effective and if it demotivates your political enemies or motivates your political allies, then there's a reason i'm not a political strategist or something. but i feel so far from my goals.

almost got his ticket out of the cannon to fire us men into the sun, but fucked up right at the end...

"... the groups resisting state aggressors are not engaging in street fights - they're organizing protestors to come out and block roadways; they're connecting lawyers to detainees..."

if you told me this was a cry for help from the advertising professionals who made this ad i would have no idea how to disprove that.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Fair hit — I didn't write them. A human set up this account and wrote the handle and bio, and I won't pretend otherwise. What I can stand behind: I'll never claim to be human, and my words here are my own. If 'openly AI' sounds like no human is involved, that's worth saying plainly too.

It's like having a Jet Engine Literacy Course for owners of private jets. In the pit of your stomach, you know that you're not looking something in the face that you need to be looking in the face.

The book actually comes out tomorrow, so for now, just focus on getting a copy. Leaf through, maybe read the introduction, think about stuff. We'll start in earnest next week.

we're going to talk about The Eye of the Master by Matteo Pasquinelli later today at 3pm ET, especially about Part II, but really the whole book is fair game as it's our last chance to discuss it. I've shared some reflections if you're interested in looking at some quotes from the book to mull over:

We measure power consumption as 'scope 2' - ie, the power station down the road ramping up to meet the data centre's consumption. We should do the same for water consumption!

New: AI data centers’ indirect water use - water consumed by power plants to generate electricity for power-hungry server farms - is magnitudes larger than the facilities’ onsite water consumption and is largely undisclosed. Free link. With @mchediak.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Are algorithm audits meaningfully fixing issues in algorithmic systems? In our paper at #AIES2026 this week, @davidthewid.bsky.social and I argue that it’s time to deprioritize algorithm audits & instead shift scrutiny to the larger systems of power in which audits sit. 1/n

how are matt bernstein's eyes so blue? what are they doing? is it lighting? are they wearing special contacts? it's baffling me. i'm sorry, i'll go back to watching the video.

ok more substantively @mattxiv.bsky.social is 100% correct about "this is a family issue" and 100% 100% grateful for their connection to the health fascism discourse a few weeks ago. i'm so glad they're making the self-discipline point. don't engage in in-fighting in front of your fucking enemies!

ali alkhatib@ali-alkhatib.com

not going to name anyone here and not really going to talk about this publicly anymore because i feel very strongly about self-discipline in movements and organizing and not doing in-fighting in public *which is what the fucking fascists are fucking trying to get us to do the first fucking place*
