Hydrology Paper of the Day @alidacantor.bsky.social on understanding the Public Trust Doctrine from the perspective of human and physical geography: the role of water and wildlife management; climate policies and scale; geopolitics of property; and the need for spatial understandings of place.

Delighted to share my new article, "Legal Geographies of the Public Trust Doctrine", out today in Annals of AAG! In which I nerd out about law, commons, water, wildlife, climate change & critical geography. @@geographers.bsky.social @legalgeography.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Anecdotally: I-5 being closed pushed some folks to transit, and this is a brilliant example of a) why we need to just demolish the inner eastside part of I-5 and b) why when we do that it will be just fine.

Looks like traffic on the segment under construction is about what it was before, and the overall network might even have less traffic bsky.app/profile/city...

The relevance of PTD goes beyond ensuring public access and protecting resources. PTD links human & nonhuman actors across scales and sites, mediates property rights, shapes practices of commoning, coproduces environmental subjectivities, & organizes life and socioenvironmental relationships.

We take a deep dive into the Public Trust Doctrine, an ancient legal principle that shapes how we govern natural resources. We dig into themes around resource management, environmental law and governance, commons, water, wildlife, climate change, and critical geography more broadly.

Maybe we will finally wake up to the fact that “free speech“ and “viewpoint diversity” are actually bad in academia. What you want is peer-reviewed knowledge, not a debate-me-bro culture in which empirically discredited views get resources & funding & platforms just because.

🚨 New article with @areidross.bsky.social and @thienkim.bsky.social ! On the politics of hydrosocial imaginaries and modernist visions of water management. Nice summary by Alexander here.

Excited to share my latest piece at Frontiers in Sustainable Agriculture with @thienkim.bsky.social and @alidacantor.bsky.social. We looked at the question of modernisms and recent transformations of the US right wing related to water resources. /1 www.frontiersin.org/articles/10....

Oh this is devastating. Sarah was a brilliant, kind, funny, generous and extremely sharp colleague. It was always a privilege to spend time with her and think through ideas together. What an awful loss.

On Saturday, our community and the world lost Dr. Sarah Knuth, one of the foremost thinkers on energy, climate, and just transitions. She was the driving intellectual force behind so much of CCI’s research. We will miss her desperately.

Portland bike culture is the best. The cat ride went by my house and many participants had cat ears taped to their bike helmets. Shamefully, my own cat declined to make a showing.

I don’t understand all the FIFA rules, but I believe our loss to Belgium today means we are required to adopt their street design standards

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:

Academics have all had this conference experience...

The 11 a.m. Tuesday time slot is at the Great American State Fair is apparently not the most fruitful, as there are more musicians in the band than spectators. (The band, consisting of young musicians, including a heluva brass section, was quite good.)

Using PCEF for AC units saves lives. For Moda renovations? Not so much. Also can we possibly use PCEF funds to get AC installed in our public schools so people aren't trying to learn/teach in buildings that are 90+ degrees??

Reflecting on Portland's deadly heat wave of 2021. Also: Monica digs into how PCEF has paid for nearly 25,000 AC unit installs since then. An illustrative peek at ways this fund has historically been used in Portland, as electeds consider tapping the fund to pay for Moda renovations.

“While vehicle safety is critical, blaming larger vehicles for pedestrian deaths overlooks systemic issues.” No, you shill—it IS a systemic issue. We need to limit hood height and charge based on vehicle weight (as in Paris).

This is what allyship looks like. My older daughter intercepted this coloring book that her little sister (who is trans) received as a birthday gift from a neighbor, and fixed it before my younger daughter even had a chance to react. Happy Pride, the kids are alright.

Super pissed that Portland Public Schools just laid off 3 amazing teachers in our school - people who are teaching, among other stuff, innovative place based curriculum, climate justice, field studies - meanwhile investing in some bullshit AI partnership. People >>> AI.

The year is 2026. A series of powerful earthquakes from Charleston to Halifax, and subsequent collapse of the Greenland Ice Sheet, has radically transformed the coastlines of North America. Undeterred by the cataclysm, 48 teams from around the world gather to play "the beautiful game..."

I'm so sad about the loss of Raul Pacheco-Vega, an extremely good and kind person and a brilliant scholar. I enjoyed connecting with him at conferences. As a junior scholar he made me feel seen and valued. He was so supportive and positive. A gem of a person who I will miss very much.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Raul Pacheco-Vega earlier this week. I’ve known Raul for a very long time. I’ve written something for my website. Read here: jovanevery.co.uk/in-memoriam-...

I joined NY’s Cutest on the Bergen Bike Bus that they ride to school every Wednesday, rain or shine. We’re adding bike boulevards and more pedestrian space on Bergen and Dean Street, from Court Street to East New York Ave. It was a wonderful kind of day.

Demanding a transparent, public process where Portlanders know what they get for their money is not 'playing politics.' It's good governance and fiscal stewardship. It's deeply unserious to suggest that the only thing that matters is locking up seven votes on council, by locking the public out.

oregonlive.comKotek signs bill for Moda Center project, puts pressure on City Council: ‘Not a time to play politics’The state will contribute up to $365 million toward Moda Center renovations if the city and Multnomah County approve their own pieces of the package.

Last night I attended a virtual meeting about potential school consolidation hosted by Portland Public School board. It started off with some pretty nasty zoom bombing - screen sharing and filling the chat with swastikas.

It was gross and jarring to have hate speech streaming into my living room. And it makes hard community conversations harder. Not blaming PPS board, but I do hope they do a better job working with IT to set up safer digital environments in the future.

Also hope PPS puts out some kind of statement acknowledging that this occurred, that it was unwelcome and uninvited hate speech/ harassment, not just a prank, and spelling out their plans for meetings to be better and safer going forward.
