let’s plant trees in the street
The alternative routes part is key to me in my thinking and opposition. PGE wants to clearcut 5 acres (with future plans for more) of Forest Park and when the initial plan was roundly rejected by council, they cut out enviro groups to suggest the same plan rather than even engage with other options
The persecution of @repilhan.bsky.social just days before an election is vile and politically-motivated.
I'm leading 175 House Democrats in denouncing this. When we retake power, we have to seriously look at how we can stop these abuses of power — starting with the power of the purse.
Over the last several days I've heard directly from parents who are scared and outraged about the PPS proposals for closure of their schools. They are calling for action from their elected officials at all levels. Today I have filed an emergency that responds to the urgency of these calls. 🧵
So much to say about Brazil, not least of which is the role that Erika Hilton, a Black trans leader and most voted woman politician in Brazil, played in mobilizing folks for Lula. She was behind the critical, concrete, economic promise of shorter work-week.

On this day 144 years ago, the U.S. Navy bombed Angoon, a Lingít village. Navy representatives formally apologized to the village deadly shelling just two years ago. Angel Jack and several high school students in Angoon created short films to document and capture what it meant to the community.
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
Can you imagine if a tiny fraction of the Dem text spam pivoted to missions like this? Activation instead of alienation, what I’d give for a single organizer replace the whole cadre of consultants
making sure everyone sees this! lula came back from the initial deficit at least in part because ten million implemented an organized strategy to neutralize algorithmic manipulation from tech lords
brazil did not just "voter harder" -- they assessed the disinformation threat and organized a tactic
I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
we stopped at longfellow school, which was slated to close in all 3 of MPS’ transformation plans, and christin crabtree explained why it is special, how it serves teen parents & keeps them in school
“this kind of school is transformational in itself and should’ve never been slated for closure.”
Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called.
An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.
HUGE win for Brazil, HUGE win for global democracy movements, and HUGE WIN for the Indigenous communities of Brazil's Amazon, omfg this is the twist we need
‘The official vote count is still under way in Brazil's presidential run-off, but pollster Datafolha projects that President Lula will win the election.
The result has not yet been declared by the electoral court, but with more than 80% of the vote counted Lula is marginally in the lead.’ 1/2
in fact, meeting Nathan Ong Norris compelled me to fish out my ballot from the mail, get out my various voter guides and do the thing. i hope this post can compel you to do the same, if you haven't yet!
not that i wasn't gonna vote, but i have been busy, and it was nice to feel inspired & do it
hello from this morning's brilliant Wildwood/Save James John Elementary ride across the st johns bridge! what a dream to take two lanes and feel (more) safe crossing on two wheels. however as always, semis and fast cars loom way too close
there is A LOT of collective grief and confusion on the north Portland peninsula, very few dry eyes at the events I went to today. people are shocked by how fast the review timeline is for closure, given the severity of impacts for some of portland's more vulnerable communities
i got to meet @nathanongnorris.bsky.social today at our green schoolyard event today at Peninsula Elementary. loved talking climate justice, PCEF, and how to get creative about investing in neighborhood schools like Peninsula, instead of shutting them down. nathan's a real one!
I’m honored to be ranked #1 by the @portlandmercury.com
Ballots are out, rank Nathan Ong Norris as your #1 choice for Multnomah County Commissioner in District 2.
nathan noted we could be bringing MORE services into our school buildings to help offset costs while better serving neighborhoods. with more time to plan, PPS could evaluate piloting this concept (rather than splintering communities on short notice)

A working group appointed by Iceland's Director of Health has produced a strong in-depth report with 42 recs for healthcare, social services, uni's, insurance and public funding
It clearly states the need to move from psychologisation to funding & support.

We literally have the largest bike-touring event in the world which has been an annual summer state tradition for FIFTY YEARS. There's a giant exhibit in the state historical museum about it. This is comical.
the blue wave is gonna slosh back on the Dems shore, wave height unknown but landing assured. what will Dems do with their power? this will partially decide our fate as humans on earth
an update is that a group of Depave volunteers self organized to support the person who came to us regarding old tree grates killing PDX street trees, they are coordinating with Kim from the Ombudsman's office to work bureaucratic channels, and have developed a mapping system & grate database
a really nice pdx woman has been upset that we are killing a bunch of our street trees by leaving them to grow into old metal decorative grates and get girdled to death. she’s advocated for them to council, ombudsman, urban forestry, and even friends of trees and gotten the runaround all around
policy around the grates, in true portland style, is incredibly complex and shared by several bureaus. the volunteer group, which identifies as Fellowship of the (Metal Tree) Ring is doggedly chasing each policy lead and meeting weekly to walk the city and map the hundreds of impacted trees
thoughts on switching from 13 years of iphone dependency to learning to use an open source operating system on an android device -- I kinda hate the learning curve and discomfort but I also have no desire to be functionally addicted to the apple corporation
I am suffering, I am free
