A Reform-led council scrapping funded improvements in an area where two cyclists had died.

Havering Cyclists@cyclehavering.bsky.social

We're shocked to discover that the long-awaited scheme to make Marsh Way in Rainham safer for cyclists has just been cancelled by Havering Council. More details here: www.haveringcyclists.org/shock-at-scr...

I was born in the 1960s and I struggle with imperial measurements. My kids have no idea about them and could not tell you how many pounds there are in a stone....what proportion of the population is calling for us to underturn 50+ years of a sensible, decimal-based system?

Buck Frexit@beany.bsky.social

Tell me you’re only appealing to old, racist, backwards looking codgers without telling me you’re only appealing to old, racist, backwards looking codgers….

I'm there in the background. Great fun event with lots of participants.

We led a glow ride around Oxford. Part of @cyclinguk.bsky.social #MyRideOurRight campaign for safer cycling for women. And @itvnews.bsky.social came along to see. If it's safer for women, it's safer for everyone! Join us and help us to do more www.cyclox.org/index.php/jo...

I wonder if @orieloxford.bsky.social relaises Reform is behind this booking?

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Reform UK Oxford will host a talk in November criticising "DEI" by the Nathan Cofnas, who describes his belief in + commitment to biological racism as "race realism", writing "in a meritocracy, blacks would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment”.

A continual gripe of mine as I often drive to Milton Keynes/Bletchley to meet a friend who lives in Cambridge and I would much prefer to go by train.

Oxford Clarion@oxfordclarion.bsky.social

Happy birthday East West Rail! (…now how about some trains?) The Oxford–Milton Keynes line was declared open two years ago today, 20 October 2024. No passenger services have yet run over the line due to an industrial dispute over whether the trains should have guards.

Starting to get tired of unequal access to services being described as a "postcode lottery" when the reason for it is mostly income inequality. It's too early for me to articulate this thought properly.

Beautiful sunrise in Oxford this morning - my phone camera can't do justice to it. But here's a dreaming spire (Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, I think) and a single lit window. captured from my study.

This is sort of true though there is already a mechanism for downsizers to benefit from the value of their former home in IHT terms. More likely people in midlife will buy larger homes they struggle to maintain as they age. IHT really should be asset-neutral: UK is obsessed by home ownership.

Jim Pickard@pickardje.bsky.social

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

Are there any chief people officers or their deputies with an intrest in AI among my followers? If so could you drop me a DM. I'm looking for people who would like to join a discussion about the role they can play in adoption.

I can understand villagers' anger at any large development like this being imposed on them but they are being used by people who want to stir up trouble and the narrative about "protect our women and children" is concerning (biggest threat to women is the men they live with/have a relationship with)

Roland Smith@rolandmcs.bsky.social

Very nice to hear a sane voice from Piddington. Serious respect to this woman, who is apparently already being othered by more bigoted villagers.

One fo the best series ever made and so much of its time.

archivetvmusings@archivetvmusings.bsky.social

The first episode of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was originally broadcast on this day in 1979. This BBC2 screening was swiftly followed by a two part omnibus repeat on BBC1 during Christmas 1979.

These volunters and their families are probably terrified. What is being done to protect them?

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

"The RNLI has announced a review of its security procedures to ensure the safety of its volunteers after anti migrant protests.. at the weekend. Some crew members had their photos and names shared on social media in posts accusing them of treason"

I was horrified by the tone of this article. It was like arguing the Kray twins were okay really because they loved their mum. I'm a subscriber but not for much longer @thetimes.com

The Times has run a story this morning about how ‘polite’ the masked men in Dover were to three white ladies on a train. Propaganda in its clumsiest form.

Not to mention the other pension schemes administered by Capita where people had their personal details accessed in a cyberhack.

Lewis Baston@lewisbaston.bsky.social

The Capita civil service pension fiasco should be a much bigger scandal than it seems to be. There are people leaving work next week who won’t be paid their pensions as entitled and will have to claim Universal Credit.

Very helpful article for anyone who travels to high altitudes or doctors who advise them.

Just upgraded my Bodleian Library access rights (can now order special collections) and slightly disappointed I did not have to swear the oath not to "mark, deface or injure" books or start fires in the library again.

The Human Tissue Authority started doing unannounced inspections of hospital mortuaries a couple of years back. It has led to a massive increase in the number of "shortfalls" found per inspection.

Oh. He had been invited to talk at an event in Oxford next month about the 3.5 year fiasco of the Botley rail bridge. Guess he won't be coming then.

But Lime should surely know where it's bikes were and who hired them?

Jim Waterson@jim.londoncentric.media

Exciting new London bike theft technique just experienced! My 200kg family ebike was securely locked to a tall metal pole which had a big parking restriction sign at the top. Three thieves turned up on Lime bikes with chairs, removed parking sign, then lifted bike 2.5metres over top of pole. Genius.

BBC actually said "alleged asylum seekers" this morning.

I Am Incorrigible@imincorrigible.bsky.social

This is precisely how the Overton Window moves. Not through dramatic moments. Through a thousand small normalising decisions by mainstream broadcasters.

Daughter has just overheard a shopkeeper and shopper having a rant about migrants (usual bile and half-truths) which ended with one of them saying "It's so bad I'm emigrating to New Zealand."

Terrible but surely pilots should have regular refresher sessions and simulation in reverting to older technology. Just as the NHS should have training and plans for using paper when computer systems collapse or are hacked....

Justin Ling@justinling.ca

Holy shit. www.wired.com/story/a-civi...

In April @NHSEngland refused my request for education quality assurance reports (which they used to publish monthly and look at experience of docs and other staff in training) on the grounds they were intended for future publication. Guess how many they have published since? 0

I'm supposed to be working part time at 80% because of ongoing health conditions, and am being paid as such. My average working hours for the next four months are 36.4 hours/week. That is considered part time for a doctor. The full time for AfC staff is between 36-37.5 hours/week.

What we put resident doctors through in the name of "training"......

Finished my latest rotation/job, and with that a year or 2.5 - 3 hour round trip commutes is done. I can’t begin to describe how lovely it’s going to be to commute for about an hour a day instead. Good lord. I’m gonna do so much gym and running.
