regrettably if you try to point this out online you'll get yelled out by 79208 journalists going OH SO YOU WANT JOURNALISTS TO STARVE??? even if you're, say, a journalist yourself, and point out that while there are clearly no easy answers, the status quo isn't exactly working for society

It’s much harder to build housing in Blue states than it is in Red states. So yes people are moving away from Blue states. One more reason that addressing the housing shortage in NY and elsewhere must be an urgent priority.

The most impressive thing about this campaign is how *creative* they are. They’re trying new stuff! Multiple times during the last few months I’ve thought “wow, I’ve never seen a campaign do that.” Much more of that needed everywhere.

The annoying spam texts destroying the Democratic brand: $678M raised through those spam tactics $282M to one consulting firm: Mothership Strategies. $11M to actual campaigns (1.6%) The party isn’t just treating donors like marks—it’s being fleeced itself yet continues to back Mothership.

Unquestionably the most dangerous and corrupt attack on the independence of US economic data in American history. Trump is firing the head of the BLS, a longtime civil servant confirmed 86-8 by the Senate, simply because the job numbers came in below his expectations today

Professor Diaz forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure someone wrote an English-language ad ("Draw the S for less") and ordered it translated into Spanish with no regard for rhyme. This got to me sufficiently that I made my own ("draw the Ss and don't stress").

Remember how the Tea Party & MAGA called their opponents "Republicans In Name Only" until they eventually took over the party? This is what winning looks like in the American political system. Define AOC as the real Democrat and make her President.

"Democrats are terrible" is what you say if you don't plan to win. Once you win, you get to run the Democrats and (as Trump showed) keep almost all Democratic voters and donors. When your plan is to win, your message is "we are the real Democrats."

When the professional ethics of a crucial profession no longer match the morality of society at large, it's an invitation to charlatans, populists, and sham reformers. And it can feel impossible to fix, since both the public and the professionals feel they're in the right.

An example from my field: the public is suspicious if it finds out a clinical trial is paid for by the company that owns the treatment. But company-paid trials are almost the only route to FDA approval for a new treatment! No wonder frauds succeed at undermining trust in this; we left the door open.

Full quote: ``The company pays a lot of attention to twitter. If you tweet something related to OpenAI that goes viral, chances are good someone will read about it and consider it. A friend of mine joked, "this company runs on twitter vibes". As a consumer company, perhaps that's not so wrong.``

If this is true, Elon can lead OpenAI around by the nose. First bullish signal I've seen for xAI. The more worrying thing is that other organizations are likely open to being steered the same way, whether they notice it or not.

I can't stress enough how close U.S. science is to the cliff. "Numbers released in May by the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicate that if Congress approves the cuts to the agency proposed by the White House, the number of early-career researchers it supports could fall by 78%" (@science.org)

science.org‘It’s a nightmare.’ U.S. funding cuts threaten academic science jobs at all levels“There is a lot of pressure to essentially leave the country or not pursue research,” one Ph.D. student says

The job they applied for: “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic ...” It doesn't say Messiah, but it doesn't say bystander either.

Jay Robertson@ijeftomi.bsky.social

I've been pointing this BS out for awhile. Rank and file Americans have the nerve to demand that Democratic officials subject themselves to manhandling, arrest, or being disappeared because voters fucked up royally. Messiah ain't the job they applied for and ain't the job they were elected to.

I want to reiterate that countless conservative judges issued universal injunctions against the Biden administration, and the Supreme Court never halted the practice. Now, barely five months into Trump's second term, the court puts an end to these injunctions. A brazen double standard.

It looks like the year after Democratic gerontocracy lost us the whole government might be the chance of a lifetime for young Democrats to run for higher office.

I am a New Yorker and this is dead right. Vote for the Lander-Mamdani cross-endorsed team and don't rank Cuomo at all.

Trump may have pissed away the entire concept of deterring nuclear proliferation with conventional air power, costing us not only our lives but also our enjoyment of Top Gun: Maverick.

Mike Black@mikeblack114.bsky.social

MOP was always supposed to be a threat in being to credibly hold particular otherwise unreachable targets at risk conventionally as an enabler to diplomacy (with both enemies and friends) It was absolutely never supposed to be just another bomb, as apparently it's viewed in this Admin

Journalists keep asking me, baffled, “What’s the Trump administration really trying to do to the science agencies?” So I say “They are trying to destroy them. Cut off their funding, ruin their facilities, harass their staff into leaving.” It’s not reform, and it never was. It’s destruction.

NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years. NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."

I'm not a New Yorker. I don't know what's best for the city. But I do know that I'd rather have someone with this kind of steel in their soul as my mayor than Andrew goddamned Cuomo, who reserves his worst behavior for those over whom he has power.

It is actually nuts that even when the NYC political establishment was presented with a broad field of talented candidates w/ many ideas, in a time of generational change & anti-corruption, they STILL chose to line up behind scandal-ridden Andrew Cuomo. It’s cowardice.
