So many takes on here making projections about the results and their consequences from people who seem to not understand how the electoral system works and/or the complexities of domestic politics in Israel ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Yes. Yes I do. Winning against an entrenched incumbent, even in a completely free political system is difficult. Doing it this far along the path to competitive authoritarianism is even more so. Iโ€™ll take this result.

Its been a good while since I was this nervous about an election outcome. I love it but have not missed the anxiety. ~50 minutes until polls close in what might be the highest turn-out election in nearly 6 decades.

Every election I learn of the names of some really small towns Iโ€™ve never heard. this year I also learned that a tissue manufacturer company that bares the name of two of these towns does not in fact originate in either of them ๐Ÿคช

As of 6pm, voting rate is 66.7% compared to 57.7% in 2022. In raw numbers weโ€™ve surpassed the entire 2021 vote. Likud asked the CEC to extend voting hours past 10pm although unclear on what grounds. Eisenkot obviously objects.

I honestly donโ€™t understand the need to work as fast as possible and then add โ€œwritingโ€ with LLMs (papers, reviews, whatever) to that on the reason that โ€œI can get so much more work fasterโ€ in academia. But if weโ€™re just making the competition worse, placing an ever growing premium on quantity, especially for ECRs, then why? Is the point to do the research, teach, interact with colleagues etc or publish as many papers as possible in x amount of time? There are a lot of things I would change about

academia, the lack of proper socialization being one of them, but also this growing and I think ultimately destructive push for โ€œefficiencyโ€ and โ€œproductivityโ€ in the name of I donโ€™t even know what

so important? Output matters, of course it does, but so much of this debate is focused on quantity at the huge expense of quality. If its not a life-saving drug or medical procedure, why does it matter so much that we work faster? This might be one of my least favorite parts of the job.

If we use these models to create more time for other things like having a life outside work / lowering stress by, for example, reducing the time it takes fill in very detailed reports that would otherwise take hours, great!

In about 24 hours, poles will open here in Israel. In what is a strong contender for Israelโ€™s most critical elections. The election pits Netanyahuโ€™s extremely unpopular coalition against a non-coherent, but moderately more liberal, opposition. Here are some thoughts as we head into it.

10000% this. So much more to critique about the underlying premiss and other aspects of this โ€œAI is better at doing reviewsโ€ paper but really - if I wanted to know what an LLM โ€œthinksโ€ of my paper, Iโ€™d prompt it. Just so tired of this stuff.

And any benefit of an LLM peer review to the author can be gained by the author doing it themselves.

And in addition, the skill of doing ethical, constructive, and kind peer reviews is an important skill for academics to possess. Just outsourcing it to AIs risks de-skilling the phenomenon of academic critique, which certainly won't help scholar-authors in the long run.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

Excuse me - how about you - the companies that f****** train these models just stop. How hard is that? You intervene.

Finally, my belongings have arrived from Birmingham and the move is nearly done (only all the unpacking ๐Ÿ˜…) The best part? The movers left the box with the kettle at the very entrance to the room so I have it right away.

Went to register with Irish Immigration but turned away bc I was missing a specific letter. No worries. What was much funnier is how shocked the person was when I told them I donโ€™t have a UCD ID card. Them: โ€œThen how do swipe into work in the morningโ€? Me: โ€œI donโ€™tโ€ฆ I just workโ€ ๐Ÿ˜…

I am super happy to be back in Dublin and especially at UCD starting in a new position today ๐Ÿฅณ while I absolutely did not miss dealing with all immigration stuff nor navigating new healthcare again, I do love this view

Last night in Birmingham. I am leaving for a happy reason but Iโ€™m still sad to leave. I absolutely loved living here and working with the TWICEASGOOD team at UoB. Iโ€™m thankful for the friends I made and discovering that I love the theatre. I will miss my life here very much.
