wild to discover that the comic anthology I bought on eBay a year and a half ago is now being listed for twice as much I would be *so mad* at myself right now if I had passed it up back then

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

I got Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" from the library and it's all the sound of Christmas morning with my mom back home forget kids waking the adult up, she'd put this exact CD on full blast at, what, 7 AM or whatever

finally tasted some homemade sauerkraut tonight that had been fermenting ~7 weeks. much saltier and less sour than any I'd tasted before. friggin delicious, especially paired with potatoes

there was this website I visited regularly when I was in college called Worth1000 (now apparently archived at w1k.com) that hosted regular image manipulation (e.g. Photoshop) contests with themes like "Zip It" or "Chimaera" (example below)

I learned a fair bit as a spectator and by playing along: the importance of choosing your sources, matching lighting, color, grain, resolution… Gaussian blur, smudging, warping… drop shadows, color dodge, cloning… it was a craft, and an art anyway fuck "a.i."

this is the easiest 5 ever do I have to sit next to Chris? yes do I have to spare Chris a moment's attention? no Cassie and I get to chat while Chris argues with Bruno Tomato over his right to put his seat back

Bran 9 From Outer Space@bransonreese.bsky.social

Updated it to reflect the ever shifting status quo of the comic. Same deal. Ten hour flight. Where you sitting? Have at it.

I've wanted to watch this for years!! the one time I got my hands on a copy, it was in the original French but without English subtitles

"DOFUS - Book I: Julith" (Movie) now free on YouTube. New English/Spanish/Portuguese dubs + French dub. >> www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlwH...

(paraphrased) *watching Space Ghost Coast To Coast* Sara: why do I know the name Timothy Leary? me: *checks Wikipedia, plays "Give Peace a Chance" by Lennon/Oko* hm, no, cool that he was there but his name is barely discernible… *plays "The Seeker" by The Who* there you go

got hired at a Radio Shack in Boston. during orientation, it was made abundantly clear that my job was not to help people with tech questions, but rather to pressure hapless tourists into buying cell phones and batteries they didn't need walked out before I ever hit the floor

I was honestly kinda disappointed by the latest "Otherwords." like, you're really gonna tell us the planets are named after gods… and English days of the week are named after gods… and so are the days of the week in Romance languages… but not draw any lines between the three?!

the seven days of the week in Latin were named after the seven "travelers" (planetes), visible celestial lights (associated with gods) that noticeably changed position relative to the stars: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn Latin-derived languages maintain most of these roots

when the Roman practice spread to Germanic lands, they used local gods with similar profiles. thus: Sun → Sunday Moon → Monday Mars (war) → Tyr → Tuesday Mercury (magic) → Odin/Wodnaz → Wednesday Jupiter (storms) → Thor → Thursday Venus → Frigg → Friday Saturn → Saturday

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

watched HALLOWEEN for the first time tonight, and my prevailing thought was: high school babysitters, in 1978? that's my mom. Jamie Lee Curtis is just a few years older than my mom

I'm reconfiguring my music library and Flotow's MARTHA is next in the queue and I'm tempted to pop off on WILLIE THE OPERATIC WHALE again

so back in college, I went digging for the music used in this Disney animated film, and I still have in my possession what was then (maybe still now) considered the definitive recording of MARTHA by the Chor und Orchester der Staatsoper, Berlin in 1944

and I have to wonder what was going through the minds of both performers and audience in Berlin in 1944 as they sang and heard "may heaven forgive you"

this is the context for when we, the audience, are told not to be too hard on Tetti Tatti, because he didn't understand the "miracle," and because Willie is in Heaven now anyway, singing with a hundred voices and what is Willie singing? "Mag der Himmel euch vergeben," from Flotow's opera MARTHA

I'm reconfiguring my music library and Flotow's MARTHA is next in the queue and I'm tempted to pop off on WILLIE THE OPERATIC WHALE again

hell, why not: WILLIE THE OPERATIC WHALE is about a whale who can sing in fact, he can sing in three voices simultaneously: tenor, baritone, and bass a "miracle" that the head of the Metropolitan Opera insists is theft (this whale must have swallowed three opera singers!) and punishes with death

I must note, Willie is Black-coded he is literally dark-skinned when we first meet him, he is singing "Short'nin' Bread" (he's discovered with the help of his well-meaning seagull friend "Whitey") he has the enthusiasm and support of the hired working-class sailors, but not Professor Tetti Tatti

thinking of THE SWAN PRINCESS in part b/c I watched a video of one of the songs with very obviously computer-generated subtitles most egregiously "Derek and Odette" rendered as "dairy candle debt" but also amused by "love" being so unintelligible it leaned onto the choir with "my idea of LORD"

recalling a fond childhood memory: my brothers and I were flipping through TV channels for something we could agree on to watch. it was the turn of the hour, so we had a shot of catching something from the start, when we stumbled upon a black screen, just beginning a familiar slow golden scrawl

gasp! THE SWAN PRINCESS was a big hit with us! something for everyone! we were on the edge of our seats waiting for the full title "place yer bets!" "it's gotta be!" "hold on, we won't know until…" the scrawl reached its sparkling revelation: THE SWAN PRINCESS… **3** a collective, laughing groan

I don't remember if we stuck around to watch the decidedly-less-appealing sequel, but I'll never forget that moment of shared excitement and disappointment, a silly little burst of unexpected camaraderie cutting through any sibling tension there may have been at the time

They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

even more this re: Annie Andrews

the bullies came at Kaptur with "you're a [slur]-lover" and she really answered with "I'm not a [slur]-lover! I hate [slur]s! I'll help you beat up the [slur]s!" (plus the gall of "Don't let them change the subject" as if that isn't EXACTLY what she just did)

movies watched this week include COOL WORLD and AMERICAN PSYCHO fun fact: both feature a David Bowie song over the end credits

phlebotomist had to draw from the back of my hand for the first time today the double-whammy of feminizing HRT: you require more blood tests, but your veins become harder to locate I used to bleed so well

woke up to a note reading FAST BLOOD stuck to my tablet (a reminder to myself not to eat anything until after I've had labs drawn)

and yet: suffered a few more kernel panics today, with one fairly catastrophic. I'm back to using the external drive, and so shall it be for the foreseeable future

Lorelei@alorelei.com

update: I installed and (mostly) configured my programs on the external boot drive today, so then I decided to shut down, unplug, and try one more time to get the internal drive working, just for fun folks… it worked
