Now, this is a great win for the people of Arkansas and a model for other communities in the country who may have their own PBS battles to fight with local government. At its core, this battle is over control of public media in a red state. Sarah sanders is looking to eradicate public information.

Yesterday, Sanders hosted Erika Kirk at the governor’s mansion to announce a statewide partnership between Turning Point USA and the state of Arkansas. This could potentially put a chapter of Turning Point in every high school and college in the state.

So after months of discontent building in the public, things came to a head at today’s commission meeting. arkansasadvocate.com/2026/03/12/a...

Now, amidst pressure from the public, two former First Ladies of Arkansas, and even Paula Kerger, who appeared in person to implore the commission about its decision, the commission took another vote and it was decided that they will pause the disaffiliation as of today.

Arkansas PBS was the first member affiliate in the nation to announce their disaffiliation from National after the funding cuts from the CPB. However, the flow of donations that came to the Arkansas pbs foundation after the cuts were announced were so great, that mid-year goals were met in August!

Even with this outpouring of support, the leadership of the now Arkansas TV, decided to announce the departure, without any comment from the public and with a complete disregard for the thousands of donors that upped their support in light of cuts.

This is a tremendous loss for our country and for our democracy. There is no finer news program than @pbsnews.org NewsHour. It’s like the healthy vegetables of news media. And it’s another nutritious item in our national diet that they have now bluntly eliminated.

THIRTEEN in New York covers statewide public affairs. What happens to these sources after funding cuts? How long before our local impartial news is forced to shutter?

This push to defund is a push to silence independent thought and logic. We must defend these vital sources of factual, local information. Our democracy depends on it.
