Font designers, I'm on my knees begging you to please include an ñ in your font maps. Hell, in celebration of my Brazilian friends' victory this weekend, thrown in a ç as well. Your latam game dev friends will love you for this

I can't help but feel that this can be thwarted by having functions inside the game that check for integrity - and that you can then do a Disco-Elysium-style callout to players who do this by calling them cowards and losers for doing it

No that same person posted this it’s somehow even sadder than you think

Knowing where so many creative tools (Rive, Adobe, etc) have ended up with their AI adoption, I dread to think what the Game UI Database could have become in the hands of someone with no respect for the creative process. The GUIDB is proudly anti-AI and will always champion humans, no matter what!

Hell yeah, procgen

New Post: Why I Love AI Next month it'll be twenty years since I went to university, learned to program, and studied AI. I wrote about why I loved it, why I still love it, and why, unfortunately, it no longer exists. www.possibilityspace.org/blog/posts/i...

The card mini game is called Triple Triad (three threes) despite the fact cards battle in all 4 cardinal directions and you get to play up to 5 cards per game. I get the board is a 3x3 grid and it's fun as hell. It just always irked me because it doesn't refer to the cards, it refers to the board.

Currently replaying FFVIII and going through some of their design decisions. Right now I'm baffled by the inexplicable choice of making a stop/go minigame for train sequence where RED is go and BLUE is stop.

I like this idea. Like crew but for walls. Garrison X - something cool happens. The mechanic can represent any number of things: soldiers at a fort, scholars at a library, cooks at a kitchen and so on. Some special garrisonable walls could save your creatures from a board wipe effect. It's neat.

Sam@rhysticstudies.bsky.social

thinking about Walls – what if they were never designated under the creature type umbrella? what if Walls could also be "buildings" or "structures" that creatures could climb or hide within?

Babe wake up, they're doing a new Peruvian internet cafes in the post-widely-available-internet era.

I feel this deeply. I made a behavior-programming-discipline specific starter kit here in Bsky cause I really feel this discipline is extremely important. But I can't call it "AI development" anymore because folks understand something different when I say that. And that fucking sucks - they took it.

NEW ARTICLE NEW ARTICLE NEW ARTICLE! Emotions are the basic and most important part of human function, as essential as protein. So why is it that so many game designers don't design for emotion? featuring Dark Cloud and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth! docseuss.medium.com/its-not-enou...

Designing good UI/UX requires a great deal of empathy as it demands you step out of your perspective as a designer and look at things from the perspective of the user. Balance, highlight and access are all aspects to focus on. Thus, designing a good charcuterie board is UI/UX. In this Ted talk I...

I'm pretty sure this is well trodden ground but MTG absolutely nailed with the names they gave their zones with how much they contribute to the integration of flavor and function. 1/

Contrast the exact same effect but as represented by white mana. While both cards functionally and mechanically do the same thing, they communicate the philosophy of their color identity through their aesthetics and it helps reinforce that as game design. 5/

That reinforcement would not work as well if the names of these zones did not evoke their function so clearly, and the art would not feel as visceral if any depiction of "Move card from A to B" could suffice.

But then you go one step further. Cards that return stuff from the discard pile to play reference necromancy, resurrection and such phenomena because of the evocative nature of calling these zones "graveyard and battlefield". This helps to simplify onboarding and it reinforces color identity. 3/

You can still have a card like Zombify exist mechanically in a card game - hell you can even call it that and its mechanics will likely be understandable by virtue of the name. But they way the art in this depiction by Engle explicitly shows the card in action makes reading it a formality. 4/

The level design for the overworld is also pretty nuts. Esthar feels huge for no reason. Like the Balamb and Galbadia regions feel reasonably sized for the content they have. But Esthar is mostly empty with POIs plopped down at seemingly random.

A few times over the course of my life, I've developed skills to be competent at something out of spite. It mostly happens when someone says "this is one of those things that only a few people can understand, so don't bother" Fuck you, I'll bother - watch me. Hearing about AI elicits the same.

I like how the goose ominously appears in this slide transition without mention. I find it to be like a prog song, where a riff is building in the background, ready to become the main melody after a few bars.

SoftBank’s investor presentation is one of the greatest things ever made. I’ve been thinking about it all day. These are the real slides shown in a speech where Masayoshi Son said he wouldn’t retire for at least another decade. The goose stuff is truly demented. Bravo group.softbank/media/Projec...

This fucking sucks. The UI Database is an incredible resource and Edd's work is nothing short of heroic

I am so fucking sick of my website getting scraped. Millions of requests per minute, somehow designed to bypass all my security rules, choking the site until it completely stops loading. If I were paying for bandwidth, it would cost me a fortune. How is this legal?

Microsoft Teams, amidst its many hell-like features, has a notification it pushes whenever it's checking for new messages. This causes the phone to vibrate and is indistuingishable from actual messages until you open the phone and see Teams was informing you there is nothing to inform. I hate it.

They fuckin got me. Absolutely fiendish, I tell you.

In what I can only describe as a villanous marketing tactic, a bakery just opened at the entrance of my gym's building and no one is more entitled to a sweet baked good as a treat for doing their exercise than gym patrons. Dastardly.

Bro, how do you cool data centers in space? It's a vacuum - there is no convection or conduction; only radiation. I don't give a shit about the robots or construction costs - how do you - physically - dissipate the enormous heat created by vast arrays of GPUs processing dumbass queries?

Building data centers in space could be cost-effective by the early 2030s. www.semafor.com/article/06/1...

NEW ARTICLE! You ever wonder why some people don't enjoy games that they oughtta be able to? How much control should a player have over the game experience? Whose responsibility is it to have fun? The player? Or the designer? Check this out: docseuss.medium.com/have-you-hea...

Like, concretely, these are exercises you absolutely should be applying to your designs. Walk through them, think about what people are likely to do with them and how you can nudge them in the direction you want. Do you change rules? Mechanics? Layouts, lighting, wording, camera angles, you name it

Broke: I have a producer that sets deliverables deadlines for our game so we keep work progressing apace. Woke: My niece really, really wants to play my games and if I make her wait I am a bad person and a poop-head.
