This is a really lovely scholarly look at an idea I've been thinking about for a year since @jbyoder.org made a similar point in this blog: denimandtweed.jbyoder.org/2025/09/the-...

denimandtweed.jbyoder.orgThe walled garden at the end of the Internet“Portal” (Flickr, Floriane Kratz) I am not a fan of large-language model chatbots. I’m enough of a hater, in fact, that I don’t like calling ChatGPT and its LLM-powered kin …

Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why. arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251

I am so saddened to share the passing of Sepp Settele. I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know him during my time at IPBES... his humor, his knowledge, his wit, his sharpness, his kindness... You will be missed, Sepp.

IPBES@ipbes.net

We mourn the loss of an exceptional scientist and one of the most effective and powerful international voices for nature of recent generations, Josef “Sepp” Settele. Sepp was a pillar of IPBES’s success throughout its existence. He was a champion for better-informed policy for people and nature.

The justification presented in the text does not properly justify why these aspects and comments were ignored, and one is left with the impression that inputs that went against what had been decided were simply not taken at face value.

It is very disappointing to see that all those comments were ignored and this new classification was the one selected. This change destabilizes the current morphological consistency of those families, hiding the deep divergence between the groups lumped. Hopefully this will be undone in APG VI.

I (and many other Calceolariaceae+Gesneriaceae+friends experts) submitted VERY strong arguments against this lumping. i) Our genomic data strongly suggests Calceolariaceae as very distinct from Gesneriaceae. ii) There are no clear consistent traits shared by the new group to justify this lumping.

As I wrote: "This administration would rather accuse scientists of being neo-Marxists, try to ruin projects and careers, damage local economies, disrupt the science discovery pipeline, and hurt American leadership compared to global competitors (including China)." Unfortunately, holds up well.

Yes, the top-line budget numbers are (nearly) flat. I can assure you that does not mean that the state of science is sound. That is already a low bar for success. And, if last year is a guide, we should not expect that federal agencies will use $$$-s as intended: www.statnews.com/2025/12/18/n...

If you are a student whose NSF GRFP application was returned without review for vague 'eligibility' reasons: 1) Let your department chair & Graduate School know. Encourage them to contact NSF & congress 2) Write to your congressional reps. 3) Write to grfp@nsf.gov to request re-consideration;
