I'm hiring a postdoc for our NSF IntBIO project on songbird behavior, physiology and fitness! Start date as early as April 1 or as late as Sept 2027. Emphasis on behavioral endocrinology and transcriptomics, plus field ornithology based on applicant interests: academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/33216.

I'm on the wrong side of 40 to have grown up with Pokémon. After conversations with my daughter and hearing there are no animals in the world, I have developed a hypothesis: Humans are a kind of Pokémon. Daughter has no strong refutation other than show says no. I just think humans are in denial.

A very talented former lab-mate of mine, Dr. Sarah Flanagan, is looking for a PhD student to work on adaptive management of some Antarctic penguins 🐧! Work would be out of the University of Canterbury and Sarah is one of the best people I know. Please spread the word.

canterbury.ac.nzLeveraging lessons in international conservation from Antarctica to build adaptive management plans for taonga species in Aotearoa | UCThis project focuses on the conservation of two iconic penguin species, who live in two extremes: emperor penguins, the largest penguins who breed on the extreme cold, isolated ice in Antarctica; and ...

That was a reject/resub. Watching status again... hoping for a better result. I swore I wouldn't watch it again, but here I am. I'm not new to the process, but I guess I have a special attachment to this paper.

Watching status of paper in review. Regretting watching status of paper in review. Nothing changes about the final outcome, but it's enough to have me guessing about it and stressing myself out. (e.g. how long do the AE and Ed need to decide and what does that mean?--probably nothing)

Advocated for myself and got a bit extra salary at my job (good for me). Turns out that put me and my wife 1k over qualifying for medicaid. Kids still get it and job has insurance, so not the worst, but definitely spending more on health than I gained from that pay bump. Our system is so dumb.

#Evol2026 Want to know what's going with this biparental pair of Julidochromis? What gene expression and hormonal patterns drive changes in behavior? Come to my talk Monday at 2:45 in the Behavior session. Want to talk Cross-sexual Transfer in any system or fishes in general? Just message me!

I study Cross-sexual transfer and joined a cricket lab in October. Yet I just learned today that some Orthopterans 🦗 have singing females! Always up for chatting with anyone here who knows more or works with them! I'll be Evolution doing my fish thing.

While the focus is on nurses. Notice a Master's of Divinity is covered which means, if the government's reason of high chance of return payment of loans is to be believed, that being a pastor is a lucrative job. Which is funny no matter how you look at it.

Excited to announce our new paper in Nature Microbiology describing diphtheria toxin homologues in Streptomyces called Streptomyces antiquus insecticidal proteins (SAIP), stemming from a long term collaboration with Ying Xu, Min Dong, Cameron Currie, and many others. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

So you're saying that if I want dry ice I have to go to a different building, request a key, fill out paper, go to another building, use key on chest, note how much I took, go back to first building, return key and enter info, then walk to my own building to use it? How valuable is this stuff?

Somewhere in Minnesota, some graphic designer is either sad their work is already no longer reflective of current knowledge or happy at another payday.

As I shift into working for a cricket lab, I'm reminded that despite taking Invert Zoo (i have the Brusca and Brusca tome), I'm naive on insects. My course was marine-focused so the prof skipped insects and declared them a special case of crustaceans.

Squeals in personal pet theories.

One of the coolest ichthyology discoveries I’ve heard about in a while. Large pregnant female livebearers with male reproductive organs found in the wild. Goes to show how fluid sex and sexual traits can be. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Look. I get undergrad workers are hard. But if you tell them they'll be working 5 hours a week and you send them home after 2 hours because you don't have something for them to do, then you are engaged in unfair labor practice.

Anytime someone tries to convince me to put my son in a non-inclusive setting, I'm showing this picture. It's the 2nd time his former class (we moved states in Oct) has sent him letters. He loves it, and he had made meaningful connections. It sucked to take that from him, we hope to rebuild that.

The number of jobs I applied to this cycle was 1/3 of the last due to less jobs and being more selective about locations. After last year I learned I had to ensure my special needs son could get supports and education. It's tough out there, but with less apps I couldn't repeat my success this time.

Guys! We got to keep all his support and keep him included! If anyone has special needs kids, keep pushing, keep fighting, keep advocating.

Drew Anderson@andersonevolve.bsky.social

Incredibly angry right now. My learning disabled kid had full inclusion in gen ed with support (hard fought to get) and was making good progress. A move to a new state (MN), and after 2 weeks they want to put him in an entirely segregated classroom.

I have done a lot in life, but nothing as challenging, high stakes, or nerve-wracking as an IEP meeting. We do them 1-3x annually and just now since we moved. With all the evidence on inclusion, it is surprising how hard we have to push to get it (every time it seems).
