(It’s been a week. No backsies.) So I learned last Friday I was awarded a fully funded research/education trip to Occupied Palestine by the Palestine Justice Network. I’ll be documenting everything in comics: witnessing, interviewing, writing & sketching while I’m there. Shana Tovah, indeed.

For the morons in the back: You can hate Netanyahu without hating Israel. You can loathe the illegal, violent settlers in the West Bank without hating all Jews. You can not like chuck Schumer or the job he’s doing without being an antisemite. And if you can’t do that, STAY OUT OF MY GODDAMN COMMENTS

A 2025 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Omar Yaghi is the son of Palestinian refugees who grew up in Jordan. He just left the US to move to China after raising concerns about rising anti-immigrant sentiment, like the kind shown here. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/china-than...

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

This. Avi talks openly about how easily it could have been for him to get red pilled. It helped a ton that eventually after we came back to Pittsburgh, he was increasingly surrounded by art and theatre and dance and books and meetings and mutual aid and progressive role models doing the work.

Tbh no questions from me. At least not in judgmental fashion. They fell into some stupid shit as a teen/young adult, realized it, and are getting off the bandwagon right away. Yes, you did harm, but that's because there's a multi-billion dollar propaganda machine that targeted you as a teen.

There are a million timelines where we didn’t counter it. Or where he didn’t have the self-awareness to question it or extract himself from it online. But he did. Only to see it in real time in the locker room of his hockey team. (Reason #739 why I don’t miss him playing ice hockey)

He pivoted to dance after he lacerated his Achilles tendon in a hockey game in fucking Delaware when he was… 11? Yeah. Right before his birthday. Hockey was MAGA. Dance was disordered eating 🫠 No wonder I’m so proud of him 😂 that kid did not take the easy route to get where he is today 💕

But in California and for those early bad bad years in Pittsburgh after I lost my mom and his dad & I split? A lot of unsupervised internet when I absolutely should have known better. Gamergate & comicsgate were actively happening, and I didn’t know how immediately that shit was all flowing down.

The ideology infiltrated everything from Minecraft to Roblox (which had its own issues, and still does), and was just a quick hop, skip & jump to the online tween+ communities Avi was discovering on his own. His first real encounter with antisemitism was online, probably 2013 or so?

Gingerly picking up universities, carrying it over to the light, and saying, aw man, this was my favorite, as I examine it from all angles.

The world right now feels like when I went down to LA to deal with my childhood bedroom after the earthquake. Everything formerly meaningful is in a pile on the floor and it's, OK, what's neither shameful nor broken beyond repair, and worth taking into the future, except it's every institution.

Also, studies show that when we improve a space or system for the disabled, the benefits actually spread to everyone. You’re not just helping yourself later; you’re helping yourself right now.

I think my ability to distinguish between "I am feeling weirdly anxious and low today" and "I am just a person having a totally normal reaction to being alive during the 2020s" might have completely vanished.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

This is a silly collection meant to channel some of the actual rage I feel at how bad everything has gotten online. I hope you’ll buy something of course, but the more important thing is that if you like it, please share this artwork far and wide. We’re all in this together.

When a private equity firm buys a company and cuts jobs to maximize profits… then runs what’s left of said company into the ground so it folds and the rich(er) dudes just move onto the next acquisition… like, what happens when there’s none left because they already ate ‘em all up?

Just something to think about as the same people trying to eliminate writing and music with the computer are also increasingly expressing the notion that empathy is a weakness.

Books and music make us understand for the first time when we are young, or remind us over and over, that we are not, in fact alone, and that other people exist, much like us. They develop and deepen or capacity for empathy.

A common thing I hear about writing, my own and others, is that it made me feel like I wasn't alone -- see James Baldwin on Dostoevsky -- or put something into words I was feeling but couldn't express. The same is true of music. We've all felt this. This song is about me. It saved my life etc.

There is no such thing as art without a human on one end of the line and a human on the other end. In communication with each other.

Avi is hiking a section of the AT, which is extraordinarily cool and exactly what he should be doing for his midsemester break. However. It has been 72+ hours since I’ve known where he is - absolutely the longest time of his entire 21 year old life - and tbh, I hate it.
