I believe we really do just have to start new organizations/institutions/businesses, which sucks because it's exhausting and the money has to come from somewhere. But if only evil people are hiring, that means jobs aren't an option.

I’m also trying to sort out the prospect of starting my own NGO, which REALLY isn’t my first choice but if it appears necessary…

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

404media.coChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support ProblemsBecause big tech doesn't do customer service, we are being inundated with AI-generated emails begging us for help.

Start with your corner store/bodega guy. Even if you have to go out of your way to find an independent corner store/bodega. That's a key relationship.

for reasons not too different from why that anonymous 45-year old professor stopped dating women his own age.

Ooof the ageism. I moved to SF when I was 29 and remember having multiple startup job interviews where they just blatantly told me I was "too old" to work at their "rocket ship" companies.

100 years from now someone will write a book about how we mowed down forests for datacenters while the world was burning. It won't be complementary.

I talk about sales and self-promotion so much as a part of design and research, because it's *harder* to tell a story with the facts on your side. And if you're advocating for the best interpretation of the data or the more appropriate course of action, that's what you're up against.

curse of knowledge, yo. www.muledesign.com/blog/curse-o...

muledesign.comLift This Curse (from your communication) — Mule DesignCommon sense isn't common. Assuming your audience knows more than they do can wreck your ability to communicate. Don't blame ignorant people before examining your own biases for the curse of knowledge...
Anil Dash@anildash.com

Truthfully, one of the biggest challenges is hubris. *Everybody* thinks they're good at comms, everybody thinks they know exactly how to persuade people, virtually everyone has zero experience. Even fewer know how to do it online. And most resources go to the folks with almost no history of success.

"In 2019, as Sam Altman was leaving his role leading the tech incubator Y Combinator to become CEO of OpenAI, he wrote a blog post extolling the virtue in founders with “too much self belief … almost to the point of delusion.” We need to ask why we as a society keep getting got, and how to stop.

"Get a bunch of old WIRED editors together these days and it doesn’t take more than one drink before we start asking each other whether we enabled the worst parts of the tech world’s rise to power. " www.wired.com/story/how-el...

The piece quotes @davekarpf.bsky.social “If she had done all the graduate work, she wouldn’t have been nearly as fundable. They would just find someone else to tell them the stories they want to fund.” We're seeing that all over again with "AI," narratives at the expense of material conditions.

"amplify your people" is 100% the best strategy

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Your monthly reminder that if you're using ChatGPT to do your science, you're failing your colleagues, community, and all of us. Here, ChatGPT makes up data and presents it as the real thing — then apologizes when confronted.

In such a bad headspace all day (mostly the heat and terrible street party bands) that at first I read the headline about Lula in the opposite direction.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.
