When Tony Blair Institute wannabe wonks do history and get it wrong... Why not let trained historians do the history writing and analysis?

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

Field day for #Skystorians teaching the industrial revolution this week. Have a read of the Tony Blair Institute's potted IR history, cited in its September 2026 'Hard Tech, Hard Power' paper. 'Modernity, as we currently understand it, was conceived in England in the mid-eighteenth century.'

The next round of @ljmuofficial.bsky.social VC #PhD Scholarships for 2027 is now open. Please reach out if you're considering a PhD in International and/or British, German, or French #history (ideally focusing on politics, security, activism, or social movements). We're not entirely sure what to think about our own @malcolmcraig.bsky.social faking historical documents. Call the History Police?

I've gone very old school with the sole handout for my Cold City 2e game at Furnace in Sheffield this weekend. Pen, paper, cold tea, oven, sandpaper. Does it look authentic? Only if you squint. Does it add a bit of tactility? Absolutely

Delighted that we host this fantastic workshop. All details below.

The one thing no one is talking about anymore is the total disappearing of the FDP from #German politics. They were part of Chancellor Scholz's "Traffic Light Coalition", but seem to have entirely disintegrated.

Hear me out... the bigger story is the doubling of votes for the Left Party in Berlin, not the entirely predictable rise of the AFD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Tentatively optimistic about the #German local elections today. I have a feeling that results in #SachsenAnhalt two weeks ago were the result of very Sachsen-Anhalt factors and mentalities than being entirely representative for everyone in East Germany. We shall see...

What will happen is that AI will be used to sift through all these (AI-written? Too cynical here?) funding bids. The 5000 or so who survive the first cull will entered into a randon draw. There's no way traditional (human) peer review can cope with this amount.

Alter. 21627 Einreichungen auf ein Fellowship-Programm. Wer soll das alles begutachten? 😶‍🌫️ Wer jetzt nicht für mehr Grundförderung und weniger Drittmittel argumentiert, der ist doch nicht gescheit.

Pioneering TV really. If you want to understand what's going on former East Germany today, I thoroughly recommend the German equivalent "Die Kinder von Golzow"... very moving portrayals of East German biographies, particularly the "shock" of 1989 and the dislocations of the 1990s.

The AFD line-up of great German historical figures almost looks like the cover my book. And that's not a good thing...

"'Er ist auch nicht der Teufel', erklärte AfD-Landtagsfraktionschef Berndt [...]. 'Wir Deutschen neigen dazu, Persönlichkeiten zu dämonisieren.' [...] Hindenburg hatte 1933 das Ermächtigungsgesetz unterzeichnet, mit dem die Verfassung ausgehebelt und der Weg für die NS-Diktatur freigemacht wurde."

Very sad news indeed. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Konrad Jarausch a few years ago in Cambridge. He was an inspiring person, a public intellectual, and, most importantly, one of the most influential historians of modern Germany in the 20th and 21st centuries.

I am really pleased with Geraint Thomas' review of my book. Some fair criticism at the end, but overall a good appraisal of my work.

This is a fairly normal thing in Europe. Kids often stay in their home cities to study if they have a semi-decent university. I worry much more about those who don't have one on their doorstep and who can't afford to move to attend uni.

'Over 81,000 UK 18-year-olds said in their accepted university application that they intended to live at home this year, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) - just over one in three students in that category.' 1/2

Very sad indeed. I knew Don from his time at Northumbria. He was an old-school historian in the best possible sense - and probably one of @ljmuhistory.bsky.social most illustrious alumni. RIP!

We are very sad to learn of the passing of Don MacRaild. Don graduated from our predecessor institution Liverpool Polytechnic and went on to have a distinguished career as a historian and as a scholar supremely skilled in explaining theory and methodology. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/j...

Hot take: The #TourdeFrance is already decided. Pogačar is just too dominant. And as much as I love watching it on TV, the competition is just one-sided and boring. Clearly, Vingegaard is not up to it, and the Seixas hype was over before it even began.
