In large representative democracies, this is where our current inadequate system for choosing our representatives (who should be people we trust to make decisions on our behalf) leads.

@t0nyyates.bsky.social can you let me have the venue and time for the 5 November Brexit drinks? Thanks.

Bonnie Greer: British-American author and critic dies at 77
Would not the world be a better place if we followed more (but not all) academics and fewer (but not no) commentators. (I often overcome twinges of misanthropy by imagining the person I am passing is a renowned but publicly anonymous academic, bit like Homeric “strangers could be gods in disguise”.)
Yeah, I think the academic commentary on here is really the only area where I have not been consistently in a state of 'really. You too?' for the most part.

@andyburnham.bsky.social Levinson 2?
Worth remembering that the media frequently did stuff like this - manipulating a bereaved young woman into prostitution, the running nude pictures of her in the press, causing her to kill herself - only to then escape all accountability by helping Cameron win in 2015 to kill off press regulation.
What are the chances that the Jason Arday tragedy will lead to @andyburnham.bsky.social implementing Levinson II?

Makerfield is - of course - hugely important, and perhaps Nigel Farage may be encouraged to fade away & spend more time with his £5 million "personal security" £££ & other donations - but today's biggest news is this: the real cost of Brexit to all of us. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Seems misleading, @benjudah.bsky.social ? How could UK be in Schengen if Ireland isn’t? On the euro, I understand the UK doesn’t fulfill the criteria and then it would still have to opt to adopt it (other EU countries have not adopted it even though they fulfill the criteria?)?

💥 97,500!💥 This Rejoin petition is so close to completion. Let’s tip it over the 100,000 mark to force the government to respond. Given the party in power now realises they need the pro-EU base - are they really going to refuse a debate in parliament on this? Let’s find out! Sign and share!

This is an unforgivably stupid situation. It is an astonishing own goal to try and drive student numbers down to move an immigration number that in turn is totally ignored by the anti-immigrant head bangers.
UK universities cut jobs, research and teaching amid squeeze in overseas students - www.ft.com/content/ded7... I don't really understand why any administration would not try to reverse the fall in overseas student numbers, but I guess I'm a naive liberal

Apart from the question of the illegality of this threat, it may well please Reform supporters who appear to relish hurting other Brits, but it fundamentally misreads the national character that reacts obstinately to being threatened.

This week, Brexit finally killed our family business. We cleared out our warehouse, handed back the keys, paid the final bills and said goodbye to our last employee. What was once a thriving firm died a slow, sad death, all thanks to Farage, Johnson and the gullible idiots they conned. 1/18
Starmer announces that the UK is pursuing closer EU relations: “Brexit did deep damage to our economy. And the opportunities to strengthen our security and cut the cost of living are simply too big to ignore. We want to be more ambitious. Closer economic cooperation. Closer security cooperation.”
