Asked ChatGPT to find blind spots in my decision-making, and I really hate how accurate the issues it listed are. 1. You over-engineer. 2. You optimize past "good enough." 3. You spread your attention thin. 4. You seek validation for decisions you can already make. 5. Your finish line moves.

For AI-assisted Rails work, I'd prioritize request specs that try to read and update another account's records. "Always scope queries by account" in AGENTS.md is useful context. Even more useful if you can give CI a way to reject the code when the agent forgets.

I would give my worldly possessions away to work with Drew again on an engineering team. Hire him. Or tell a friend. And have them tell a friend he's on the market again.

Welp... Got laid off from Podia today. Kinda a lot to process for a Thursday. I'll have something more coherent to say eventually. For now, send Ruby/Rails leads. Or dog pictures.... Both are good.

A group of top-tier Rails developers I know and worked with (plus myself) were unfortunately laid off today. Any company would be fortunate to pick them up. If you or anyone you know is hiring, send me a DM 🙏

Hire Drew before your competitor does and you have to sit through a meeting about why they're shipping faster.

Rewatching #TheBear and realizing Pete might be my favorite character. Imagine marrying into that family, still being kind to everyone, and somehow being the one they all think is weird.

Ruby 4.1.0dev on Windows (mswin, not mingw) is getting faster. On the ruby-bench headline benchmarks, the 4.1 dev build runs 1.32x faster than 4.0 without a JIT, and 2.19x faster with YJIT, which now works on mswin. Stay tuned for the 4.1 release.

Got paged just as I was falling asleep. By the time I reached my laptop, production had recovered. It's almost 5am and I haven't. Love a self-healing system. Would love to be one. Gonna be a long day. 💀

I got a haircut today and the lady asked me if I was stressed and then proceeded to tell me she could feel tension in my head. wtaf.

New post: I added webmentions to my Bridgetown site. Replies, likes, and reposts from Bluesky can now show up directly under the original post. No comment system, no JavaScript widget, and the site stays completely static. I wrote up how it all works: andrewm.codes/p/adding-web...

andrewm.codesAdding Webmentions to a Bridgetown SiteHow I added webmentions to my static Bridgetown site using webmention.io, Bridgy, and a nightly GitHub Actions job, so replies and likes from Bluesky show up right under my posts.

Also: Ryan is building Knowatoa, which helps you see where your company is showing up in AI search and how to make sure you show up more. If you care about how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, etc. talk about your product, check it out: knowatoa.com

Got to interview @rmcastil.bsky.social on #RemoteRuby today. The first time I met Ryan, my Uber was taking me to the wrong LA airport and he and Mike Buckbee immediately offered me a seat in their Uber. Nearly missed my flight but somehow ended up with one of my favorite Ruby memories.

Just booked my flights to #RailsWorld and after seeing the total, I'll be standing ten toes down on this issue for the foreseeable future.

Happy and grateful to find Remote Ruby #1 again 🥳

We asked the Ruby on Rails community about their favorite Rails-related technical podcasts. Remote Ruby takes the top spot, but we found a familiar voice at #2 and #4. :) Full survey results coming soon!

I was kicking off a project today that I thought might be 4-6 weeks of work when @andrewm.codes _eventually_ interrupts to tell me they’d basically built the entire thing in half a day. Tell me again that AI hasn’t changed this industry faster than we can adapt

🎙️ New Remote Ruby is out! We finally gave the show a new intro, so let us know what you think. This week’s episode covers RubyConf, Raspberry Pi side projects, MagicMirror dashboards, AI, Battlefield 6, IPv6, and a surprising amount of air conditioning. www.buzzsprout.com/2260490/epis...

Genuinely, I find myself working harder. One of my super powers was I was faster than you at designing & writing what I needed to. I needed that time saved to be able to regulate, avoid burnout. Now that’s taken from me. I can’t outpace you. You (proverbial) got to catch up to me for free.
