MPs returned from conference recess this week, and the PM wasted no time taking everyone back to 2016, reopening Brexit with a podcast answer on Russian interference. Read about this and the rest of the week's politics in your free weekly roundup with @electionmaps.uk at www.navigatepolitics.uk

The French army once had a marching-band-battle with one hired by Adolph Sax. Sax was trying to prove that the Saxophone was the perfect combat music/marching instrument. As military instruments and music was where all the money was. the French military band establishment were trying to stop him.

Tonight at 7.30pm on Radio 3, I’m talking to Dr Rachel Johnson and Lt-Col Lauren Petritz-Watts about music and the military

Anyone fancy a game of Chess?

Here is the next Random Area of the Week (RAW16) superimposed on a satellite image. Note this sub-Area is in two disjoint parts that share a common constituency history. Perhaps you can identify where this is? If not, all will be revealed on Monday, along with snippets about its electoral past.

Hands up everyone who got through the Starmer era without any bottom-related shenanigans. *Pause, sigh* Hands up IN THE AIR everyone who got through the Starmer era without any bottom-related shenanigans.

It’s the fourth anniversary of this magnificent bit of political commentary, which—at least to my knowledge—has not yet shown up in the current government’s legislative programme, despite the clear expertise of the poster

A clip from the musical finale at last night's Rochdale Festival of Remembrance, with our friends at the Scots Guards Manchester Branch. Hopefully it won't be another 7 years until the next one comes around.

We are recruiting by the way. If you play a wind instrument to Grade 5+ standard and you can make it to Bury on a Weds evening, and if you want to do cool stuff like this, drop me a line!

Following the shock revelation by ITV this week that Reform UK has racist councillors, there will be an extremely rare triple by-election in Solihull after all three councillors for Castle Bromwich ward resigned in disgrace. The Conservatives need to gain one of those seats for a council majority.

There have only been three previous triple by-elections this century. Last October all three independent Maidstone councillors for Harrietsham, Lenham and North Downs ward resigned over massive garden village development plans for the area. Reform UK gained all three seats.

The other two triple by-elections both occurred in Birmingham in 2005 following the notorious "banana republic" Election Court case, which resulted in all six councillors for Aston and Bordesley Green wards being unseated.

Tonight's job: Festival of Remembrance (it gets earlier every year) at Rochdale Town Hall, feat us and the pipes and drums of the Scots Guards Mcr branch. 7pm start, tickets are £15 and include the legendary Rochdale Council pie and peas.

Shepshed, incidentally, last elected a Labour county councillor at a by-election in October 2007. It voted Conservative 2009-21 and Reform UK in 2025.

I've been out canvassing for this one and, crucially, reminding people that it's on a Tuesday and not a Thursday!

A couple of photographs of a World Heritage Site in area RAW14.

This week's Random Area (RAW14) is on the western edge of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, consisting of the Chapel, Denton & Westerhope and Lemington wards of the city. It is sub-Area 2 in Area Map & Table 79a: Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

A new edition of Andrew's Previews has just gone out to subscribers, and Radio 3 are playing the Previews' theme tune: Grieg's piano concerto by Grieg.

Just going through a list of by-elections and wow I'd forgotten how mad some of the 2019-24 Parliament was. The brief chip-shop themed parliamentary career of Steve Tuckwell. Margaret Ferrier's Infectious Ride. Neil Parish's sticky end. All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
