Neo-Northumbrian. Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline. Harmonist. Bad guitarist. Midnight Baker. Hill walker. Cricket lover. Company grower. Bird noticer. Wine hoarder. Shameless with my bonhomie.

Scandalous that the curlew was so underappreciated. Clearly not enough people know the joy of hearing curlews call across a drizzly moor.

Pine martens are objectively the coolest thing here. I am minded of Mark Corrigan's observation about "people"

@louisehtucker.bsky.social is doing her thing next month in the most beautiful setting. There are a couple of places left, so she'd be grateful for it to be shared as widely as possible.

What are you doing 6-8 November? Come and join me and five other writers for a writing retreat in the North Northumberland countryside. Write all weekend, talk about your w-i-p or idea, be fed and watered or just sit in front of the fire with tea and cake and think. More info: louisehtucker.com

Ok don’t let’s get carried away but I found something genuinely good on Threads.

Watched him pitch 8.2 innings in a 12th inning victory v Kansas City in 2016. Already something of a veteran then. Great stuff.

My goodness, what an incredible moment. After Justin Verlander secured the final out of his career, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch came out of the dugout...to summon Verlander's daughter out to embrace her dad on the mound.

I must try that in my profession: Dear Congress: "Biotech could be a risk to humanity as a whole!" BTW, I run it.

I have a new website, www.louisehtucker.com, made by me, to advertise my NEW writing retreats in gorgeous north Northumberland, local Artist's Way classes in Berwick and my own writing. Come and visit!

A little glory for Monday: 10km of the Northumberland Coast Path, Bamburgh to Belford. I’ve started volunteering as a warden so I check my section for hazards every few months. @andygardiner.bsky.social’s been telling me about the biggest, phoning the signalman to cross the railway, for years...

Every, fan, pundit, casual watcher could see that was wrong. But we stop the game for five minutes so that a qualified referee can fuck it up. In no way is this better than when refs and linos occasionally (very occasionally) got it wrong.

Extreme right-wing protesters are in a stand-off with the RNLI in Portsmouth. The group, led by Danny Tommo, are waist-deep in the sea and threatening to go "under the water" if police try to arrest them. Six lifeboats monitoring. Volunteer rescuers giving up their evening for this.

For those who know her* and may have missed it yesterday, @louisehtucker.bsky.social has finally joined Bluesky. Do follow her for wit and wisdom on writing, books, food, cooking etc. Also, expect photos of hills and beaches. *and for those who don't

I'm not allowed any more cookbooks, unless I've worked on them, but since Nights Out at Home was so excellent (the Wigmore toastie!; the late lamented Y Ming's hotpot!; Tayyabs lamb chops!), this one might sneak onto my shelves.

@dsnorthnorth.bsky.social you’ve been keen to protect children from the harms of social media. It would be great if you could work also on advertising like this and regulating the behaviour of Meta etc.

Jim Waterson@jim.londoncentric.media

I’ll raise you this Facebook/Meta advert from last week that offered the chance to tell an AI child exactly what to do and she’d do it!

Not normally a big fan of chard but The Green Shop in Berwick had some this week that was irresistibly bright and fresh. So trying @nigella.bsky.social recipe for spaghetti with chard and anchovies.
