It's already illegal. Congress banned it near-unanimously in 2022. That law allows the ban to be lifted only if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. He's simply breaking the law that's already on the books.

Republican US Rep Brian Fitzgerald tweets that he will introduce a bill to block purchases of Russian oil. Don Bacon (R-Neb) tweets that he will co-sponsor. Obviously this won’t happen during campaigning recess (and Trump could veto anyway) but interesting push-back on Trump.

The boring but effective way to ensure 'AI alignment' has two steps: 1. make those who build and sell AI responsible for what it does. 2. apply our best existing alignment technology – the law – to them. Maybe the AI is sentient, malign or benign. Who cares? It doesn't matter for this to work.

This "going rogue" framing is nonsense. These are still just text analysis models. It's openAI that is "going rogue" by giving a computer program complete autonomy to make decisions without human oversight. That's a danger whether it's a fancy new LLM or an old-fashioned SQL database.

I think Refine is a very good tool. It has helped me a lot in the research process. I use it often and have a monthly subscription. But this is problematic. If I want to submit to the AEA or Econometric Society journals, I would feel compelled to check with Refine first.

A highly enjoyable bit of cultural convergent evolution is that His Dark Materials has the same narrative structure as a 90s JRPG: First level: you, your childhood friend who will ultimately die have childish hijinks! Final level: you, your love interest and a motley crew fight God

It's true that a "downside" or rising working class wages is that goods and services that are very labor intensive, like fast food and taxis will become more expensive. There will be increased competition for housing. The media *only* reported and emphasized these downsides.

It's a very odd feeling to read that the cost of your firing was $20 billion to the US economy. Studies like this are so important. It's hard to put a value on a public service. Trustworthy economic data is vital to so much economic activity in a $29 trillion economy. Worth your time to read.

🚨New paper. 🧵Our baseline estimate implies that preserving trust in the integrity and quality of official statistics generates economic benefits of about $25 for every $1 spent on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics's budget. cc: @nickbloom.bsky.social, @ericagroshen.bsky.social, #econsky

Absolutely extraordinary. The Democrats conceded *nothing* and got everything they demanded. They said no ICE/CBP funding, and that's precisely what happened. In other words, they did not cave. At all. But the GOP did—completely.

Sahil Kapur@sahilkapur.bsky.social

House passes the Senate-approved DHS funding bill by a voice vote. It funds everything in DHS except ICE/CBP, including TSA, FEMA, Coast Guard, CISA. This ends a 75-day shutdown. Bill now goes to Trump to become law. www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...

OK, time for a game! These charts show employment for a selection of detailed industries (4-digit NAICS) vs their prepandemic (2012-2019) trend. Which ones, if any, seem to show the effect of AI? (Chat GPT launch shown for reference.) I'll post a version with industry labels in a bit. #EconSky

As we first reported in last night's @semafor.com media newsletter, NOTUS is rebranding/dramatically expanding. In a memo to staff this morning, the organization said it plans to "launch this new version of NOTUS under a new name" and double staff from 50 to 100.

WaPo Deputy Opinion Editor is just straight up lying about Mamdani's estate tax proposal (in both tweets and an op-ed). The bill contains a $1.75 million primary residence exemption, exempts retirement accounts, and the 50% marginal rate doesn’t kick in until $30 million.

Cool paper and highlights the trade-offs often involved in policy, especially with new employment relationships like in the gig economy. As the author says, the way to actually increase pay for workers is to have barriers to entry (1/4)

Raising pay is possible but probably requires imposing some kind of barrier to entry—remember how the taxi sector used to use medallions and other licensing requirements to ensure high driver pay rates? 12/

Of course, barriers to entry also undermine the flexibility benefits of gig work for workers who need ways to earn extra cash at key moments. Our findings suggest that there is no easy win-win with minimum pay regulations. 13/13

➡️ Since there are minimal barriers to entry, any increase in earnings opportunities leads the supply of drivers to rise until the longer queue times roughly offset the benefits of higher pay per delivery. 10/

➡️ In gig markets, unlike "standard" labor markets, there is no distinction between people who are employed and unemployed: *everyone* looking for work queues for delivery tasks, which get distributed across the whole group. 8/

➡️ So when higher pay per delivery attracts new drivers to gig work, as customer demand falls due to higher prices, *all* drivers face longer queues for deliveries. 9/

2️⃣ Tip income, which accounts for the *majority* of delivery driver pay and is not covered by pay standards, went down. Some of that was organic as customers faced higher delivery fees, but some was accelerated by apps disabling tipping at checkout in Seattle after the reform. 6/

1️⃣ Drivers were completing fewer trips per day, even though they seem to be spending the same amount of time on the apps. It looks like drivers have to endure more time and distance off the clock to find tasks to do. 5/

Usually, minimum wages at least raise earnings of covered workers, even if there are other tradeoffs. But that's not what my colleagues and I found. We found that deliver drivers in Seattle earned about the *same* after the reform as they did before. 2/

We spent a lot of time digging into the data to see what was going on. Could this have been some issue in how we constructed the data, or how we did our analysis? With a lot of work, it became clear that this *wasn't* a fluke. 3/
