American healthcare is the best. Call urgent care: “Do you do stitches for kids?” Them: “Yes” Wait 3 hours with kid who needs stitches. Provider pokes head in door: “We don’t do that here. Go to the ER.” 2 mins tops. They bill at a rate equivalent to paying someone $6.2 million a year.

What it means to be an expert is going to change drastically. I have no idea what is waiting for us around the corner.

Sad to learn of the death of Jim Sabin. In residency, Jim facilitated our invaluable small group sessions on the challenges of doctoring. A phenomenal listener, accomplished psychiatrist/ethicist, he also, as the obit notes, had truly world-class eyebrows. www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/b...

I think hospitals and health systems are kidding themselves if they think consolidation-fueled high prices will end well for them.

Two-thirds of Americans now say they favor Medicare for All, according to a new @kffhealthnews.org poll. That's the highest level KFF has recorded since it started polling the idea in 2016, up from 53 percent in 2020.

If and when the country gets fed up with the opportunity costs of this spending, what policy tools do you think they will reach for? Managed competition tools? Or price controls?

A great clinical trial about optimizing existing technologies. For reasons that escape me, for trials like this we largely rely on countries like France, which have medical research budgets that are small fraction of our own.

An open-label, randomized, noninferiority trial showed that intermittent hemodialysis was not noninferior to continuous renal-replacement therapy in critically ill adults with acute kidney injury. Full ICRAKI trial results: https://nej.md/472QMel #LIVES2026 | @esicm.bsky.social

I always play “guess the European trial” game with tweets like the quoted one above. If it the kind of trial that seems so useful that it’s bizarre it hasn’t already been done, you can safely bet it’s a non-US trial. If it’s a new technology, it’s 🇺🇸.

To be fair, I am oversimplifying, and there have been plenty of , e.g. optimal fluid resuscitation icu trials in the US. But my “guess the European trial” hit rate is still pretty good with this heuristic.

U.S. health spending is on pace to cost almost $16,500 per person this year. And the biggest portion of an employer’s health spending — even for the largest corporations in the country — has remained the same since the 1980s: https://bit.ly/4edjsFi

i'm actually going to take this goofy post somewhat seriously: much as going to the gym requires discipline, so too does going to the mental gym require discipline. and discipline is harder than it looks: it is about *your* ability to discipline *yourself*

The US is, or was, the world’s leading scientific power in economics. The Trump administration is inflicting extraordinary damage on what was once an infrastructure of excellence. The open question is how much of that damage will prove permanent.

And so it continues... Our economic debates seem utterly disconnected from the reality. That reality: This is an economy mostly creating healthcare jobs, and it does so month after month, and everything else is just noise.

Several of my classmates in medical school were graduates of military academies like West Point, where they took classes in organic chemistry just like the rest of us. Does it really help the military to hobble these schools’ ability to recruit top orgo professors?

Not that it applied to me given the hybrid nature of my position, and I wouldn't necessarily describe USAFA's tenure policy as good, but this is incredibly disappointing: apnews.com/article/hegs...

If you were pre-diabetic prior to starting the trial, you most likely were not pre-diabetic at the end of the trial. If your blood pressure was high, it worked as good or better than available blood pressure medicines

Where is Wipeout? Find me a better tv show about people falling down. You can’t.
