Attempts to create a “distinctively British” AI hit an early stumbling block when developers discovered that none of the servers would talk to each other because they hadn’t been introduced.

Gavin Grant and Kelly Link of Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet are doing a campaign to help pay down the mortgage on their new and used bookstore. This is an awesome couple who support the writing community, so please support them! I donated & got some awesome stories & Blackwing pencils!

"Thank you for backing our campaign! And, extra thanks to everyone spreading the word on all those social media sites we're not on. "One surprising Indiegogo thing: we don't get emails when people back the campaign. In 2016 when we ran a Kickstarter for a limited edition of a John Crowley book..."

The “Andor” references, the frogs and the Straw Hat Pirate flags were one thing, but this strikes me as increasingly surreal.

As hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across France in support of student protesters, many displayed a rallying cry: “Bismillah, c’est les ténèbres.” nyti.ms/4z7fsyU

This was about the sum total of the disorder that I saw in Paris last week (beyond a few dispirited students picketing the School of Geography, and some CRS convoys charging through the streets, lights flashing and sirens howling). But it seems as if things became a bit more volatile after I left.

My Amazon "About You" is boringly mundane and contains no speculation about the shape of my ass. They suspect I have a cat, which could explain all the cat litter I keep buying, and that I "cook with specialized techniques", which sounds faintly perverse but is, alas, untrue.

2026 Me: Listen, I'm you from the future. The war on AI is coming. Past Me: Cool. Do we have to fight off swarms of killer robots with machine guns? 2026 Me: Actually, no. Most of your time and energy will be spent tarpitting aggressive webcrawlers and trying to reclaim your disk space.

pls stop asking chatbots what they "think" and then adding it to your articles or posting it for giggles

This is officially the dumbest fucking timeline. We live in the dumbest of all possible universes.

Garner's Red Shift. I still love this book and was obsessed with it as a teen but it SHOOK me the first time I read it. The timeshifts. the multiple timelines interweaving and connecting, the traumatic darkness of it... It did something to my writer and reader brain that left a mark.

Good article from Gothamist about Urban Swim, an open-water swimming organization run by two friends of mine. I do photography for some of their swims, but the pictures in this article are by the very talented Paul Frangipane, Urban Swim's other regular photographer.

Speaking of ebook deals, @qntm.org's "Valuable Humans in Transit" is on sale for $0.99 currently (only in the Amazon Kindle store, alas). I haven't read this one yet, but their "There is no Antimemetics Division" impressed the hell out of me.

Ted Cruz does have a point. For example, I recently told a number of people that on the morning of September 11th, I wrestled Godzilla to the ground and gave him an atomic wedgie, but it was 25 years ago and the details are a little blurry. It may not have happened exactly like that.

I wrote about a reason not to use generative AI in your writing that I haven't seen anyone talking about. Once I realized this, banning GenAI in our lab's writing became a no-brainer. Feel free to share, I think this is probably useful especially for trainees: www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the...

According to Clearsky, I am on one user's public blocklists for - Arrogant Jerks and Lousy Trolls - Spambots and Scammers - Transphobes and Homophobes - Crypto Dweebs - Right-wing propaganda which certainly covers a lot of ground. Pretty sure I'm not any of those things (except maybe the first).

Second, watching "Wasabi" in Paris, at a time when sushi restaurants were new in France. Jean Reno uses his fingers to scoop up a generous helping of wasabi from the pot on the table, obviously about to eat it raw. Collective gasp from half the audience, followed by nervous laughter from everyone.

Got me thinking.. What's the strongest reaction you've seen an audience member have to a scene in a cinema? During the birthday party scene in SIGNS I saw a whole row of young women literally throw their popcorn in the air like a cartoon.
