Took out my tuxedo for the Park Kyongni Prize ceremony on Thursday—same one in my profile pic—and thought of how funny it was that I got a surprising number of wear out of a tux I bought off the Internet. (But I put it back in the closet because it's a lunchtime ceremony and a tux would feel weird?)

I dunno. This award feels funny. I'll talk about it someday. But I am very grateful for any recognition of literary translation, so that is what I shall focus on. That's what Park Kyongni herself would've wanted. And that's reassuring to me.

Why do you hate flock cameras? Is it because you’re racist? Why do you hate data centers? Is it because you hate poor people? Why do you hate AI programs helping incinerate children around the world? Is it because you are a fake social justice warrior?

Yes, making the richest people in the world even richer at the cost of human knowledge, skill, and labor is the dream of all working class people everywhere. We were put on this earth to give our bodies, minds, and soul to the technologists to devour and sell it back to us. That’s liberation.

being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

??? Machine translation is notoriously scheisty with non-common languages. Heck, 80 million people speak Korean and ML is still super baaaaaad when translating into English and vice versa. It only sorta works between first world languages, especially large ones spoken in North America.

Once again a well established, renown and famous artist with nothing to lose is entranced by the slop and thus yanks the ladder up from all those below him. Not surprised, heard this before but it's still dissapointing - and we won't forget he's done this once the bubble bursts.

Congratulations to Pip Adam, recipient of the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction for Audition!

I feel bad about calling someone a nationalist at an event today. I meant it as a joke but it came off so mean. I was also wrong. I just have such a visceral reaction against any hint of ethnic essentialism, which I feel goes against my larger project of Korean literature in translation.

But my friend and writer Lois Rho pointed out to me that to acknowledge language has a historical context and vector and affect specific to an ethnicity may feel essentialist but that doesn’t mean that it’s untrue. And she’s right. To deny it is a fool’s errand. It is obvious even to a baby.

I did run into the lady I argued with again—her name is Nayoung—I apologized to her and we had a nice chat. She graciously accepted my apology. She’s right; some things just can’t be translated. And I have to admit that. I have to be ok with that. I try REALLY HARD. It’s enough. But not everything.

The second event is now confirmed—see you IN PERSON at Boston Book Festival! It's free and no registration required! Event on Korean poetry (as translator): bostonbookfestival2026.sched.com/event/2ZI55/... Event on dystopian fiction (as author): bostonbookfestival2026.sched.com/event/2XK2T/...

Signed off on final proofs for ON THE EVE OF GOODBYE by Kyung-Sook Shin, my fourth book for this author (who is also my first). A novel written in three long letters between women on the verge of saying goodbye, to the country they left behind, to friends, to life. It broke my heart on every pass.

As translators we really don't nakedly hate Europa Editions *enough*. They shouldn't get a cookie for publishing translations. Fcuk this publisher.

Pathway for Haruki Murakami to win the Nobel Prize: stop writing novels (he is not great at it and at this point, he will never get better). Write only short stories (which he is excellent at). REVIVE the art form, make it so a thousand short story writers can bloom. It’s noble. It’s Nobel.

Forgot I have an entire translator's note due tomorrow and it's coming out in this really irritated tone and the fact that I'm writing it in Korean doesn't help because we have jondaemal (polite form) and when you have that you can say the MEANEST THINGS as long as you use polite conjugation

It is wild the degree to which being on Bluesky (as opposed to Twitter, which feels like walking into the clamour of an Indian railway station) feels like hitting mute on India right now, with the whole nation at a turning point.

Personal hobbyhorse, but thinking about AI in publishing is really making me want criticism to go harder on discussing the actual style & substance of books. If we just talk about plot & vibes, we're leaving the door totally open, & missing out on the good stuff besides. "It's just words on a page."

So are we just not doing the WTO and FTAs now?

More bad news for shoppers as from November 1st, another €2 charge will be added to each item coming from outside the EU. It comes on top of a €3 charge imposed earlier in the year. #VMNews

I've delivered talks at more than half the Ivy League and even Yonsei (twice!) but Kodae has never once invited me to do anything and was told yesterday that it was because I didn't graduate from the literature departments. Which shouldn't matter, except the professors are mostly not from Kodae...

Anton Hur@antonhur.com

I have the windows open in my office today and some professor talking on the phone outside just now said "Well you know Korea University grads are known for acting like a bunch of second-rate gangsters" and I'm willing myself not to go down there to prove his point 😌

... so I am being excluded for not graduating from the departments that they themselves did not graduate from?? 😂 If this is the truth then the school has changed beyond recognition for me and yes, I probably shouldn't do anything with them, polluting my alma mater with their gross puritanism

When I was an undergrad, I could take any course at any department and the professors would not bat an eye; I had a genetics professor be amused at best that a law student was taking his course but I was never discriminated against in any department. And if that's not how it is now, then 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also famous for making translators sign away the rights to their own translations. So they’re well on their way to not recognizing the humanity of translators, why wouldn’t they embrace the robot movement?

If I ever want to make a lot of money, I know I can always open a Gongcha franchise on Seoul National University campus, because I am sitting here on a Saturday and each order is taking 30 minutes. I can get a whole French meal served to me in that time

Shanna Tan, if I indeed am and you are translating me right now, can you change it in the translation so that I get my order in the next two minutes, luff youuuuuu

Yes it's my fault for going to a Gongcha but the library is closed for electrical upgrades (right in the middle of presentation and report-writing season, what perfect timing) and all of SNU Commons is shut down except, oddly enough, this Gongcha. Maybe I'm inside some k-healing fantasy novel

Now where have we seen this before I can't quite put my finger on it

Whoa. @haleaziz.bsky.social has the scoop on a truly insane plan to use some military training ships for deportations, with people presumably shackled or locked in cells for days at a time as they transit to Central and South America. Each journey would be staggeringly expensive — and dangerous.

I know I am about as biased as possible on this but go to an indie bookstore. An indie bookstore's vibes are the opposite of...all of this. You'll be surrounded by memories, stories, brave visions of the future that don't ignore our barbarous present. Your brain can be quiet AND full. Seriously.

SO good: “…we are constantly strapping in for the future, making ready each time to throw out the communities, cultural practices, and values that we have come to appreciate in their imperfections, only to be told once again that the plane must return to the gate for another unspecified checkup.”

“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.
