So here's the news. I have accepted a position with the Los Angeles Sparks' front office. I am excited beyond adequate words, really. I had to say a proper goodbye to my public work, and specifically to NetsDaily, though trust that I could not say it all: www.netsdaily.com/site-news/11...

Was just sent this book announcement by a friend and had to spread the word.

Yes, true social justice is to give the world over to the people who have expressed nothing but disdain for human beings, who have exploited labor to extreme degrees, and who have made it clear, over and over, that their goal is to have ownership over human life and work. bsky.app/profile/dame...

my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite

Why do you hate flock cameras? Is it because you’re racist? Why do you hate data centers? Is it because you hate poor people? Why do you hate AI programs helping incinerate children around the world? Is it because you are a fake social justice warrior?

Last night I had a vision of the free world, paradise after revolution, and it was apparently wasn’t a world where human beings across the globe are able to live with dignity but instead it was the dream of the technologists where the human being is an obstacle to making one more dollar.

When those in the third world asked to not be exploited and dominated by the western world, they were really asking for chatbots that cheapens labor even further. When AI is used to further bomb, enslave, and dehumanize on a massive scale, the cry for the world is for more. More money for Sam Altman

First look at Dwayne Johnson as the Chicken Man in Benny Safdie's ‘LIZARD MUSIC’. The film follows a young boy who finds a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing otherworldly music that opens a hidden door to the whimsical Chicken Man.

The stakes are high in the sense that she’s not just some random person like most of his subjects usually are. He’s using his regular tricks on someone who is manipulating the entire process and is image-making through Fielder’s film. She’s not some unknown mystery. She’s doing PR.

👻 Ghost of Greg (He died) 👻@booksnotwooks.bsky.social

OP is obvs entitled to his take, but I kinda reject the idea that the stakes in YCSE are that high. The movie isn’t exactly asking whether Holmes was guilty or not. And both she and Evans come off looking varying degrees of demented and terrible.

That’s an observation the doc could’ve made, to Zito’s earlier point about low and high stakes subjects, but it’s way more interested in avoiding what we consider to be requirements to the documentary format to examine the format itself. Not right or wrong, I guess, but it’s a notable choice

Oh yes, Billy is insane. But so is she, he’s just the one making assertive statements. She hides behind him and her non-answers. She’s not in a forced relationship with him or think he’s doing wrong. Her walking away so that he’s the one discussing making money from the film shows the agreement.

yawoocoog90.bsky.social@yawoocoog90.bsky.social

FWIW, I do think the film succeeded in showing what a freak Billy Evans is. I saw someone on Twitter say the movie is evidence that Austin needs to be nuked and as someone who has lived in Austin for most of my life, I have nothing to counter that with

It’s just hard to take these people seriously

Frustrated younger, male voters feeling locked out of the economy and diminishing opportunities are rapidly abandoning the Republican coalition, or straight up opting out of political action altogether

That movie is even sillier on rewatch. People are framing her as some kind of weird enigma because she’s giving PR non-answers to a man who she picks precisely because he’s not a journalists or a documentary filmmaker who is willing to interrogate her actual actions and reality.

My friend said it afterwards, this Fielder project works when the stakes are low and the other person is just an inconsequential everyday person. But when the stakes are high, when the person at the center has actually done something reprehensible, it’s a total mismatch.

Boooooooooo!

Toyotathon Rationalist@inafewdaves.bsky.social

I agree. Fielder should have put a red frowny face in the corner of the screen when a bad person was visible and a smiley face for a nice person so the audience would know how they should feel.

Lol what’s this performance supposed to be? Crueler to who? Sympathy is not given out on a general basis of being a person.

Boo-cey Kwiatek 💀@lucykwiatek.bsky.social

Yeah, she's a person. We tend to be sympathetic to those, and I shudder for a society that's even crueler than ours currently is.

Talking to someone as a way to figure out who they are will just leave you dealing with self-mythology, which we all do and is not a good way to get to know anyone. It’s why when 60 Minutes was good, they’d contrast direct interviews with reporting of what the person/company has done.

This post is unavailable.

I should say, it’s an incomplete way because you only learn what the person thinks about themselves. Which can be as delusional as it can be full of lies because they’re performing for you. And performing for the camera when it’s there. You can never forget that there’s a camera there.

Well, no. The point is that society generally doesn’t see those stories as sympathetic, evidenced by how often they are punished when they shouldn’t be. Holmes’s mythology and the subsequent sympathy is tied to her identity, and isolating her story away from the facts helps weaponize that.

But we don’t. It’s not about what we should but what we do. The movie is more about what Nathan and Lance are interested in as much as it is about what she hides. The film’s premise and those scenes have to be put side by side with why they’re uninterested in the larger story of her life and actions

Laura Marsh@lauramarsh.bsky.social

Regarding you could say some form of "she is a mother with children about anyone" - yes you can, and we should?

I think if you see someone who modeled themselves and was modeled by their greater culture as the female Steve Jobs, and who then lied and suppressed evidence that contradicted that story, while taking advantage of people’s desperation, the silliest way to engage with that is on a sentimental level

It’s the same way that people are so fascinating by the psychology of killers in order to romanticize what is often a banal consequence of some social problem. If you switched the perspective from wanting to sympathize with the perpetrator to seeing them as ordinary, you learn so much more.

Yeah, Wired wrote about them falling into her trap from the start as well. I think leaving that movie with the same conclusion is a bad thing and is a failure of the film, which could have been safeguarded by providing the facts of her behavior and scam.

Prairie Rose Clayton@hooverdam.bsky.social

which she absolutely knows, because being a pretty white lady is exactly how she got Theranos running in the first place

I think this is a failure of the film, though. Malcolm Harris and John Carreyrou have been pushing back against this because this framing of “knowing the human” is inherently sympathetic and it achieves this by ignoring so many of the hard facts. For one, she chased that public attention.

You can do the whole “she’s a mother being taken away from her children” thing with anyone. Martin Shkreli was just a neurodivergent working class kid who really believed in his company. It’s a nonsense sentimental angle. And it’s particularly being employed for her because of her identity and looks

How many non-white and blonde mothers who get thrown into prison, for crimes they didn’t commit or for harsh sentences do we do this sentimental act for? It’s a very politically charged thing to do, on the basis of identity. Everything about that movie depends on you wanting to sympathize with her.

She wasn't convicted for defrauding clients, but her company definitely defrauded clients and caused them irreparable harm by giving them test results that were 100% wrong

Two, there’s more than enough evidence that she knowingly lied. This isn’t a case of she’s so delusional or in her own world, there’s proof that she knew the truth and worked to deceive investors and the public. And then she went after reporters who tried to uncover what she was doing.

And as Malcolm says, if you open up the lens and look at her as a type of tech person, as part of a long lineage of scammers, even in the context of her own family, then it doesn’t make sense to be wondering about the complicated nature of the individual, when she fits perfectly in that world.

You’re only making me want to tax them even more.
