The Society of Authors has withdrawn from the ill-conceived concession to the dark side that was the "ethical GenAI" charter because of the mass and vocal outrage of authors. Publishers need to be made afraid of this level of anger too.

Donate to Speculative Insight! Then, next year and among other delights, you will get to read me, a diffident British guy with an uncertain place in SFF who is fond of knowing literary references and worked-up irony, write about the various virtues of Adam Robe … oh. Donate to Speculative Insight!

Last season: Boring boring Arsenal scoring only setpieces. This season: Booo Arsenal for scoring from open play, where are the setpieces? It's not unexpected but still hilarious.

I don't love the approach either but in the short term until that shift happens I'd rather us continue to find ways to win regardless than not.

Lewis@lgambrose.bsky.social

It wasn't fun and I don't love the approach and I think we should be playing much better buuuuut clean sheets are nice. Beating a promoted team 3-2 is much more exciting and there's more to like but there's plenty of dissatisfaction to find in that as well, if you're that way inclined.

Most of the best books are midlist books. "Quietly good, selling steadily" has never once been turned into a marketing budget, and it's still most of what's worth reading.

I feel that if an announcement needs an explanatory blog for people not to think it's absolutely terrible, a) that explanation should have happened with the announcement and b) are you quite sure it's *not* terrible?

The Society of Authors@societyofauthors.bsky.social

We understand the strength of feeling this AI Charter has provoked & that more explanation is needed. We will publish a blog tomorrow detailing why, in a vacuum of regulation, this charter demands more transparency & accountability from organisations on how they are using AI now and in the future.

I get the premise of "well this shit's here, how can we best work with it?" but starting from the premise that it *can* be used for good, and not defining how, is just...giving everything away before the negotiations start.

thing is, if this pledge had actually given specific real world examples of ethical do's and don'ts, so that people could assess if publishers etc were living up to them, it could have had some effect. Without that, handing out a "We agree to be nice and ethical" badge achieves nothing.

I don't think it does the field good, in the long term, to elide line-level issues in reviews; & we fail to elevate talent if our analysis doesn't go deeper than the pitch.

Personal hobbyhorse, but thinking about AI in publishing is really making me want criticism to go harder on discussing the actual style & substance of books. If we just talk about plot & vibes, we're leaving the door totally open, & missing out on the good stuff besides. "It's just words on a page."

think BBC's Sherlock has to win this, adored the first season but the whole thing went downhill with such DRAMA, with such FLAIR that I cringe at the very thought of having ever enjoyed it

This award in particular means a lot to everyone at SH - it’s so specifically directed towards the goal that underpins everything the magazine does. By which I mean: shucks. 💜

Discoverability for new SFF books seems way down these days, especially outside of bestsellers and certain subgenres. I'm noticing this as both a reader and a writer. Great stuff is in danger of sinking without a trace. Please post about new/recent books you love or are excited for!!! I'll start:

All of this is too complicated to actually get into with character limits (and because the whole thing is so partisan) but this is for everyone: Rich people do not care about us. They use us. They hate us. Do not celebrate when you benefit from their wealth. They are never, ever, doing it for you.

What's so tricky about the whole business with City is that you cannot say for certain that if they hadn't cheated the obvious outcome would've been that whoever lost to them would have actually won. It's not that easy unfortunately, much as it would be great for that to be the case.

Kate will be focusing on out of print SF. New editions of older texts, like yesterday's piece on Beatrice The Sixteenth, will still appear, too. So pitch in the usual way! AJ's monthly media corner is also additional to not limiting of our coverage - keep pitchin', we'll take as many as you've got!

I think a proper way to reframe the “Arsenal have had six years to build this, other teams are just starting” bullshit narrative we are now getting is “Arsenal have been well run, intelligent, and committed for a long time, while other teams have fucked about aimlessly for the last half decade+”.
