Amtrak debuts first new Airo trains in Northwest

Passengers and onlookers at Fairhaven Station on Wednesday morning eagerly awaited the arrival of the new Airo train, which went into service today for the first time. Eventually, the entire Amtrak Cascades fleet will be replaced.

Today @amtrak.com debuted their first Airo trains on @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov! We are excited to welcome our beloved train line here in the PNW into a new era of passenger rail.

Two new trainsets will make four daily trips between British Columbia’s Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and Eugene. The rollout will continue through early 2027 with an additional six trainsets expected, eventually replacing the existing Amfleet and Talgo trainsets.

One week away from a new era of passenger rail travel in the Pacific Northwest! On Sept. 30 @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov debuts the first of their new Airo trains. Expect to see accessibility improvements, expanded seating capacity, and new technology to make the ride even more comfortable.

Amtrak will introduce the first two train sets of its new sleek, upgraded and amenity-rich Airo Fleet to the Amtrak Cascades route.

ALERT: The Blumenauer Bridge is CLOSED after a person drove a car on to the bridge and damaged fencing on the bridge. We plan to open the bridge later today, however, morning commutes may be impacted.

Our friend Charlie Hamilton from All Aboard Washington is quoted in this @grist.org article about our new trains! “It’s nice to be able to be going faster than what people on I-5 are doing. Having trains once an hour would be very helpful, and the Airo trainsets would make it possible to do that.”

SERVICE UPDATE: @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov will resume regular service for all trains on Aug. 19. Train #500 will resume the following morning, Aug. 20.

We are happy to report that the tracks north of Portland are opening! Tomorrow, on August 19, all Amtrak Cascades trains resume normal service, except Train 500 which will resume on Thursday, August 20. Let your summer travel plans resume. We’ll drive! 💚🤎🤍
