This is right and I have been saying it forever. It makes no difference to my life if someone wants to play word games around whether I'm really a man.
I do think that a major failure point of a lot of mainstream trans activism is the focus on responding to attacks on trans people in the same arena that those attacks are being made, i.e., indulging the notion that this is a philosophical debate over gender metaphysics and trying to win that one.
2019 video of Heidi the Octopus, captured by Dr. David Scheel, a professor of marine biology at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage & aired on PBS Nature program "Octopus: Making Contact".
We think the color changes are the results of Heidi dreaming as she sleeps. Let's talk about it.
It’s helpful to have an actual Labour MP saying right out that it’s not what transgender people do or say that is the problem: it’s their presence that she objects to, their existence. Yes, this is what it always was, and these people just keep winding each other up and up to ever more extreme views
One thing that encourages me is that despite individual Democrats capitulating on trans rights, I think if the polling holds, we will elect the most pro-trans congress and senate in US history.
Followup: here's an informative thread by @jtimmer.bsky.socialbsky.app/profile/jtim... correcting some of the more overblown hype/PR. As I've said elsewhere, what caught *my* interest was the idea that it opens the door to new questions (about brain evolution etc). That is enough.
Ok, this "there are two separate brains" thing appears to be making the rounds, and I want to be absolutely clear: this is a press office overhyping some perfectly reasonable science that won't come as a surprise to most developmental biologists.
We've lost so much, so fast, it's absolutely breathtaking. And people act like us expecting Democrats to clearly say that nothing was wrong with the rights trans people had 5 years ago is an unreasonable activist demand.
@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social A video you may wish to share with Damian: Useful Charts on bird taxonomy www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E1k.... Includes a request for feedback before the final printed version is published, I've queried the exclusion of songbirds that are neither passerides nor corvides.
I was going to go to bed a while ago, but instead I've been sitting in my chair for 30 minutes feeling angry with the world. I won't link to the Bluesky posts that fuel this anger by reporting on bigotry and injustice. That would not do me any good right now.
This is a super cool paper (and last chapter of her PhD thesis) from my now-graduated student @import-astrory.bsky.social
I would explain more but, really, the headline kind of does the job.
‘Gender critical’ transphobes are the ultimate ‘I demand to speak to the manager’ Karen’s!… Seeking authoritarian rule, to step in and ‘punish’ those they dislike! 😣
They did the same to Mermaids, then Stonewall, now Amnesty…climbing ever higher to stamp down harder! 😖
They are PRIVILEGED BULLIES!
On the topic of useful starting points . . .
"The path to wisdom does, in fact, begin with a single step. Where people go wrong is in ignoring all the thousands of other steps that come after it." — Terry Pratchett
Men who feel threatened by the prospect of being beaten by a woman deserve to have their faces rubbed in the fact of their own worthlessness at every opportunity.
This morning I found a counterexample to a mathematical conjecture that I first proposed a number of years ago. The conjecture was inspired by thinking of words in a block of text as ledges in a platform game.
The Odyssey controversy is (mostly) made up, but there are some genuinely interesting and thoughtful videos out there responding to it. I'll post a recommendation list below (no links because I don't want to fight Bluesky on previews).

For my newsletter I wrote about how Kier Starmer should serve as a warning for centrist Democrats in the US. It's a real crystal ball moment. www.burnsnotice.com/its-the-cent...
@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social I just watched a video debunking the 1996 Bent Spoon winner, whose name I shall not utter here. I slipped a mention of your work into a comment, as an example of what to read instead.
My interview with Richard Fidler on 'The Memory Code' is replayed again. Although this is nearly ten years old, they have replayed it a number of times. It is still my favourite book and favourite interview.

Amnesty International exposed years of anti-trans reporting at four UK newspapers. They ignored it.
Research by human rights group identifies nearly 17,000 articles on trans-related topics in just five years
You couldn't get such evil and nonsense "guidance" out of people who just have misunderstandings and ignorance. It's forged out of raw hatred and malice and is designed to cause as much suffering as they can sneak past the very weak moral checks of the public
The UK Supreme Court has now decided to strip disabled people of their human rights too
"This judgement sets us back decades and removes safeguards that history shows us are vital for disabled people."
Horrific

there is nothing "logical" or "sex-based" about anti-trans bathroom policies. it's about stigma-contamination: *all* trans ppl are "corrupting" or "corrupted" in their eyes, so we are all banned from women's restrooms: juliaserano.medium.com/penises-priv...
Trans people are not “fighting for unpopular positions that society isn’t ready for.”
Trans people are fighting to KEEP the rights we have enjoyed for decades.
We have been able to legally change our gender markers since the 70s and before.
Same with bathrooms, sports, youth, all for decades.
@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social Just watched a stone circle video by someone who shares your surname (Pete Kelly). Where his view differs most from yours is that he sees the move from earlier monuments like Newgrange to stone circles c. 3000 BC as a move from "god kings" to a more egalitarian society.
@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social You may have seen that @scishow.bsky.social has a short video out on "The Evolutionary Basis of Autism". If you have any time for it at all, I advise starting from the 2:48 timestamp. That will skip over the introduction and summary and go straight to the substance.
@evanurquhart.bsky.social Re your gender identity essay, I find it troubling because it presupposes a definition of gender identity that I don't believe was ever seriously promoted, though it may reflect a common impression. It conflates failure of communication with failure of theory. Am I unfair?
What's happening over at Mastodon? Two browsers on two devices are currently refusing to connect to mastodon.online, citing security issues. This has never happened to me before.
What actually happened was that Jennifer was also invited, but when we talked about her participation, we were told "she could go shopping with the other wives." The deep-rooted sexism of the whole enterprise couldn't remain hidden. Jennifer was repulsed, I felt likewise, and we said no.
@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social Watched a video about the 2007 archaeology of West Kennet Long Barrow, claiming that it "collapsed" after just a single lifetime or so of use. There's obviously a bias when "use" is equated with "use for burial", but even so, how do we make sense of this?
You know me I don't share fundraisers unless I can tell you I trust them with my whole heart and my own wallet. This one gets protective gear to legal observers in Minneapolis / Saint Paul

BTW I checked, and you have to go back 41 generations to bsky.app/profile/capt... before you find another bunny with the same object, along a direct line of descent. Someone else can do the statistical analysis.
(On weekends I have a little engagement bait as a treat)
Hey you guys this is fun! Copy paste the bunny and then put something else in his hand 😃 (examples are below)

Meet Veronika, the tool-using cow. Veronika uses sticks to scratch herself, using different orientations and motions, an example of multi-purpose tool use. This suggests scientists may have underestimated cows' cognitive abilities. arstechnica.com/science/2026...
Reading about what ICE is doing in America hurts my brain and anything I could say is inadequate. As much to manage my own cognitive load as anything else, here are two examples: bsky.app/profile/norm... and bsky.app/profile/mari.... You have to want it abolished or you're a terrible human being.
