I think we’re several years past the point where “Whoops, it was just groupthink again, silly us” is going to cut it as an explanation for one avoidable shitshow after another, don’t you

It’s probably not a coincidence we’ve seen the same across all channels in Britain in the past 15 years, a period notable for relentless revelations of sex crimes by politicians, policemen and prominent public figures.

“Surely Labour politicians and officials would not play silly buggers with our children’s future, just out of spite and self-interest” well, can I just show you some old tweets here

Speaking from experience: if the idea here is “Labour MPs will eventually come to their senses and do what benefits everyone, rather screwing everybody in their own interest” then I can tell you a lot about how that one usually goes.

It shows you what character traits it was that pushed this incredibly weird Savilesque ego-monster to prominence in the first place, I guess.

It's really damning. The accusations are numerous and well-supported. But I was really struck by the descriptions of Trump's behavior -- the name dropping, strong-arming, and attempts to buy off silence. His gross rivalry with Epstein. It's all so familiar. It's shit he's been doing his entire life.

I mean, it is not funny, but you can at least have a laugh that it is at long last also making that guy miserable, as well millions of people he’s never given a damn about.

Great memories watching the original show as a kid. Less pleasant memories of ear-based body horror mind you, but that was in easily the best one they ever did.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I don’t know folks, it seems to me that the kids might have been right about their ruling class being full of deeply racist, misogynist sex offenders. Perhaps that whole Cancel Culture panic was badly wrong, and apologies are in order? Not least because it was obviously vexatious *at the time*.

It’d be galling if you’d set your own career on fire to tell the country Gove is a fully radicalised little fash twunt; all you had got for it was Yeah, Yeah, We’re A Bit Busy, Love and now he’s doing Der Sturmer clips for clicks in his role as editor of the nation’s top far right politics magazine.

I imagine that whole thing taught her some pretty painful lessons about how British politics and media work, and how far the picture presented to the public reflect the actual day-to-day reality.

Okay, let’s do this Stephen: there’s no smoke without fire, the fish rots from the head. Let’s have an utterly ruthless inquiry into the BBC’s hate. Drag in executives, journos, presenters and really give them The Treatment at full late 2023 intensity. That would be clarifying.

I’m not even being facetious here: a really high profile all-media assault on the BBC as a den of racist hatred, with fingers pointed at all kinds of famous and important people, shouting al lthe usual fun stuff, would be very helpful. Let’s see how committed everyone is to this bit.

McSweeney Labour tested this proposition to destruction and beyond with ceaseless upsucking to reactionary voters who hate them and will never vote for them. The result: they got banjoed at the council elections, then dropped Keir Starmer in a river like a mobile phone full of incriminating messages

McConaughey’s point there is “don’t be snooty wankers to people for no good reason”, it’s isn’t “if you crawl on your knees to the public asking ‘Sir, sir, does this patriotic flag please you, I too hate the fucking immigrants’ then they will vote for you”.

I’ve spoken about this before: yes, get out there and speak to regular people. Really listen to what they have to say, you will find it very enlightening about which parts of the public can and cannot be swayed with reasoned arguments bsky.app/profile/flyi...

I always love it when people get up on their high horse about this, because I do know lots of people who were Tories for decades and are now Reform and let me tell you, getting to know them is a highly instructive and helpful experience with many useful lessons. Give me a minute here.

Just realised that more than anyone else, the political figure Truss most resembles is Keir Starmer: he too was a clueless bimbo hired to do the bidding of a bunch of malignant back office swine, only too happy to do and say whatever they wanted if it meant he got his turn in the big chair.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s wacky stuff but damn, everyone is real brave when the battle is finished and it’s time to bayonet the wounded.

Again, it’s worth recalling what happened when the SNP put forward a parliamentary motion about this type of thing, which included the words “collective punishment”. Remember how all the press lads were outraged, but also very non-specific about it was that had happened and why it was bad.

I recall near unanimity that the Speaker of the House would have to step down because had clowned himself and made a mockery of the institution, but then - as tends to happen with anything awkward - the matter was dropped like a shitty stick never mentioned again. The Speaker? Still in his job.

(Everyone was very non-specific about what had happened because they all knew exactly what had been done, and why it was very bad. That’s why they later fell upon Labour’s announcement that it was About MP’s Safety, Actually like it was a packet of crackers found on a remote desert island).

I think this becomes quite understandable in the context of an international fascist movement that has swept much of the planet in a decade, with horrifying and very extreme consequences for the entire species

Like, Trump already has us on the brink of a for-real World War for no sane reason, just because he likes throwing his weight around and it didn’t occur to him that Iranians shoot back. The energy policy of the far right is going to destroy the lives of tens, hundreds of millions of people.

I see Martin left at least two and a half million quid in his will when he died: the kind of money that could buy a big dog or round the clock security, if you were more into that than e.g. sitting silently in your dark house, clutching an illegal pump-action shotgun www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

"its [brexit] weakened our control of immigration" even in rejecting it's consequnces, we still affirm nativism's premises

🤩 This is a significant moment. Burnham says openly that Brexit has weakened 🇬🇧 economy, failed to deliver promised control over immigration and produced a harder Brexit than many people were led to expect in 2016. On rejoin EU: “I would like to see that happen in my lifetime.” And next 👇 🧵

I note that everywhere the right wins now, they push for some mix of wars of aggression, looting and destroying the public realm, impunity for corruption and war crimes, roasting the planet with hydrocarbons, deforestation, destroying public education, ethnic supremacy and McCarthyist crackdowns.

I do not think it should be controversial to say that the world’s more notable far right politicians - Trump, Putin, Bolsonaro, Le Pen, Farage, take your pick - are actively evil people with evil projects, pursued by evil means. Of course they are, they openly revel in it.

I mean, it does not matter whether people who vote for fascists are badly misguided, just stupid or plain evil either. The results are the same regardless, and should be met with the same response.

I note that everywhere the right wins now, they push for some mix of wars of aggression, looting and destroying the public realm, impunity for corruption and war crimes, roasting the planet with hydrocarbons, deforestation, destroying public education, ethnic supremacy and McCarthyist crackdowns.

Is it perhaps time to recognise that they don’t do this because they are misguided or deluded? The problem is not that they are not failing to understand. Donald Trump has spoken about how he knows he isn’t getting into Heaven. Because their projects are simply evil, selfish and usually criminal.

The global fascist movement has been roaring for well over a decade, and I still blinked this morning when I saw a mainstream commentator call it that, because in general they just do not do that.

The news from Brazil and Serbia are great and show that you don't defeat the far right by copying it or trying to appeal to their supporters You do it by being uncompromising, showing the danger they pose and offering something different to the many crises people suffer from

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
