I don't think there's anything unusual here. Critics and marketers alike gravitate to where audiences are, and generally speaking they aren't on Xbox right now. We saw a similar flight (in the opposite direction) in the PS3/360 era when the default disc became 360 discs

Windows Central@windowscentral.com

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has plenty of reviews. But look specifically for Xbox reviews and things get weird. buff.ly/yXTsSfN

For multiplat in the UK, v quickly in the 360/PS3 gen the 'default' review disc became the 360 disc; if you wanted PS you had to ask for it. Then the next gen it slid back towards PS. It is still sorta PS, but what has actually happened this gen is that Steam has /truly/ become the default

What shows how bad this has shifted for Xbox though is another factor was that it has generally been way cheaper for publishers to generate/get Xbox codes vs the other platforms (except Steam, ofc), and despite that fact Xbox has become the rarest code to receive

These sorts of things can exist in the modern climate, just big corporate media does not wanna pay someone 2 weeks of work to create "only one page". It's more lucrative to have someone churn 40 short search harvesting pages. I get it. Support indies directly; help to solve this problem

a very rpg site interview on all fronts. niche questions, hardcore topics, and of course this sort of thing

"We've finally found the strength to SEEK A WAY OUT of the dark prison we've been trapped in" - Kotaro Uchikoshi on CRASH KEYS, ARGs, Zero Escape, Too Kyo Games, movies, coffee, and much more: www.rpgsite.net/interview/21...

"Our company really is in a critical situation, and yes, we're actually searching for spiritual stones along the riverbank" is a real 2026 game dev in a nutshell studio head quote also

The Pokemon TCG situation is a legit disgrace at this point. I know they're selling inventory fast, but there's damage being done here? I have a kid at 'gateway' age for Pokemon, desperate for cards; we can't get any. But her interest is waning, the window to 'make' her a Pokemanic closing.

And for what? Dickhead scalpers and neckbeards? Honestly. We popped into Smyths yesterday and were told they'd got stock but 20+ people had camped outside from about 8pm the previous day. It's cardboard. Just print more. Flood the market to collapse the resale so these people go away

Wrote about GTA3, and how its world design has over time transformed from a believable open world to an eerie delight, something which still sets it apart as something special - just in a different way. Also, it's 25 years old today. How's your back?

As it turns 25, something about the accidentally eerie world of GTA3 is still unbeatable to Alex https://www.respec.net/feature/268-as-it-turns-25-something-about-accidentally-eerie-world-gta3-still-unbeatable-to-me

This is actually an incredible idea tbh. There are so many experts in specific niches that could be deployed to great effect

I recall someone (was it Craig P) actually pitching Valve about getting unemployed games journalists to actually curate the platform properly. We’d love to kick shit like this off into space.

Really vibing with this summary of DualShocker’s 10/10 review for Final Fantasy Resonance. Sometimes you play a jRPG so good you just sit there in the glow of your monitor and go “Hayes Madsen.” And really, what else do you even need to say.

This guy has done a post saying "I'm not a coder and have never claimed to be", which, fair enough. But seriously for a second -- imagine someone going on Match of the Day and saying they don't understand/haven't heard of offside, the transfer window, etc

Simultaneously feel like that Mass Effect trailer looks really cool, and also that if this was the sort of vision that was being presented to the (admittedly braindead) EA execs I am not remotely surprised it didn't ignite their excitement or open their wallets.

For me, the Dragon Age: The Veilguard preview event was when I felt sure BioWare's fate was sealed. It was posh and expensive, the EA campus basketball courts dressed to the nines with DA theming & hands-on stations. The game looked promising, the demo generous. And yet... but...

For C&C, that mainstream attempt manifested as increasingly famous people in the cutscenes, rough but admirable efforts to foster an eSports community, and finally mobile slop. For BioWare, it was less-RPGy games, including Anthem & the aborted action/multiplayer versions of DA4, and then death.

Unless you're genre purists like CDP or Larian etc, a big-budget RPG can be a v unattractive bet. Expensive, complicated, if it goes wrong you lose big. So I do always appreciate publishers who don't have the genre as their bread and butter having a bash - MS rebooting Fable, Capcom OKing DD2, etc.

In every conversation, folk from the BioWare side were proud of the RPG chops, while those from the EA end seemed at pains to downplay them. I remember thinking: What are you even doing with this studio if this is the attitude? New owners or no, that became the problem at some point after ME3/DAI.

All of which is to say: it didn't fit. RPGs weren't seen as 'mass market enough', and EA didn't have the patience or willingness to invest to try to be the next Cyberpunk or whatever. Like C&C/RTS, attempts to mainstream it had failed, resigning RPG's status as games for nerds. EA wasn't interested.

There was something in the /wording/. Anyone from EA - anyone non-BioWare - always referred to it as an action/adventure. This wasn't just departmental (BW games were part of EA's action game unit alongside Jedi etc); it read as outright unwillingness, corporately, to engage with the RPG moniker.

If anyone in Canada has been affected by the EA/Bioware announcement and would like to talk about it, email's in my profile. Can discuss on the record/on background etc.

I'm seeing some people connecting the dots about how progressive BioWare was contrasted with the nature of it's new owners, but I don't think this is anything. I just think they realized there's a more reliable bottom line return on putting those resources into sports etc tbh, art be damned. Sad

It's easy to make these connections but of all the gods I'm pretty sure the most worshipful god of all to these people is margin. Always

A nightmare, sorry day for legacy Western RPG studios. Even if it felt inevitable. I hope the people - and perhaps even, eventually, the IP - can land somewhere that appreciates what made this studio special.

EA is shutting down BioWare. The next Mass Effect has been canceled: https://www.rpgsite.net/news/21611-bioware-shutting-down-ea-job-cuts-mass-effect-canceled

It is difficult to judge when this became inevitable but if feels like it's been coming for a long time, even before DA shipped, or before the Anthem/Andromeda messes. But crikey it still stings.

Alex Donaldson reposted

you can't judge when bioware was really killed because the mismanagement at the higher level under EA has been so constant and pervasive since the acquisition at every stage that every game shipped at all was a herculean miracle

When it comes to exclusive reasons to buy this hardware this gen has been pretty mid tbh and so asking me for a bag of sand for more of that is definitely not all that attractive

We're going to have games on PS5 for a long time yet, right? Jut say no to $1200 consoles https://www.respec.net/feature/265-playstation-6-xbox-helix-look-like-theyre-going-to-be-obscenely-expensive-but-you-likely-wont-need-one-for-years

Final Fantasy Resonance sports one of the best turn-based combat systems seen in years, bolstered by lovable characters and a genuinely stunning presentation. But it's slightly held back from full greatness by a lackluster story and odd pacing. Our review: www.rpgsite.net/review/21594...

My over-simplified take is that players who gravitate towards mechanics/systems will enjoy Final Fantasy Resonance more than those who gravitate towards narrative. For a more comprehensive overview, here's Hayes' review ->
