from 1868 to 2025 there was little dispute about what the birthright clause meant and the idea that the past year has been some great scholarly debate is absurd. a handful of partisans and hacks have churned out junk so that the president can get what he wants. that’s it.

The article notes that declines in international students are fueling the budget crisis. That’s entirely pain inflicted by the Federal government. But the solution is not directly responsive to that; I sincerely doubt those lost international students were coming to study classics. 1/

2/ universities across the spectrum use budget crises (including the ones created by the current regime) to allow them to take actions they long to implement for other reasons. This article reveals one common claim: the programs/majors being cancelled have low enrollment. But let’s examine that.

3/ I haven’t found the Syracuse specific information but enrollment numbers cited in similar moves always, when I follow up, are based on *majors*. Not students taking courses: those numbers tend to be defensible. Nonmajors take classes from programs like these. We can even increase that effect.

4/ how? By teaching courses with more relevant foci. Using accessible language. Finding ways to fulfill distribution requirements. Inviting students forced to be STEM and business majors to enjoy their passion in courses intended for non majors. Engineers have loved archaeology of sex and gender.

5/ the core problem with majors as a metric is that students are told that to get a job they need to major in a narrowly defined suite of fields. That’s the biggest battle faculty either never wage or lost already (on good days I hope it’s the former because we could take it on even now).

6/ data show that liberal arts BAs can find rewarding employment. Data for my discipline (anthropology) suggest a BA is no longer the entry-level degree in most analysis-based jobs (what the liberal arts prepares students for). That’s a key challenge: letting students know the BA is a start.

7/ but fundamentally we need to decouple education and preparing for employment and help students with both. Humanities (and social sciences) gives our students skills in research, analysis, persuasive argument, and writing that are valuable. And not tied to a job market analysis that is outdated.

8/ job-oriented majoring is often, perhaps always, chasing a past labor market demand. We need students and families to understand that the future is not so easily predicted and what they need are flexible skills— not a repertoire of facts specific to one imagined job.

9/ I still think it is useful to represent the kinds of careers students from our majors pursue. I spent much of my teaching time introducing students to cultural heritage and museums as fields of practice. But the two other things I routinely did in counseling students are different.

10/ first, I reassured students that the major they chose didn’t lock in their future. The data show employment trajectories are unpredictable and diverse: why are we telling students they will get a degree and be hired and stay in one field, career track, or job?

2. "Members of Conscience" = Democrats. Republicans of course have the majority in the House and Senate but passing this bill requires a 60 vote supermajority in the Senate. So they passed an immoral spending bill in the House and stalled in the Senate. Predictably.
