I am reminded of Dr Frankenstein hoisting his dead bodies into the sky to catch a bolt of intense energy to make life happen. What are data centers but the same impulse.

AI safety regs: Laughable, because the techbros don’t want safety. They are busy summoning demons. More accurately, they are feeding AI with destructive sources then standing back to see if the agents will act on them. Sure enough, they will. Move fast and break things, remember.

New just now in The Atlantic: David Robinson resigned this week. He was among the longest-tenured employees at OpenAI—and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier launches. He is very worried: “The time for trial and error is over.” You can read his essay here: www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

It should be obvious that the main reason most other rapist kids got off easy was not because of their potential future careers, but because their parents are wealthy and connected.

To add a little context to this story, both Cobb and Forsyth Counties are white flight suburbs of Atlanta. The story of continued racism from them could fill its own book. Cobb created its own bus service when Marta rail expanded into N. Atlanta to block Black Atlantans from going there.

So, take Isr**l, here you have a country, sketchily created, brutally murdering the inhabitants of the country they’ve taken and dehumanizing the whole original population. Included in their plans is to march the survivors out of the contested lands to some distant arid and unfamiliar terrain...

...and then develop the stolen land for new settlers. Technology is on the side of the colonizers. Genocide & cruelty are actual government policy, supported by the majority of the country’s people. Why oh why would Israel come to US to get support & guidance? Something familiar about it?

This reminds me of how the social sciences have longed for credibility as an actual science for so long, we all forget that they are not. The downfall of all of these whiz kids is believing statistics can explain everything and forgetting that bias (& ignorance) can warp stat methods and results.

Yes!! I keep saying this too, these are all Lex Luthor wannabes. Every utterance is monologing. Every idea has been scripted already and is inevitably overblown and ridiculous. 🧵

The first three posts this morning: Tiffany Hayes wowing everyone with a 3 pointer from the logo, Angie Nixon beating a liberal transphobe with a fraction of $$$ in her Senate primary, and Wired mag just highlighted Tisha Johnson’s stylish and affordable new pickup truck design. Common denom? 👉

All enthusiastic reviewers were male. No lesser man than Steph Curry lost his shit when Hayes hit the basket. Nixon beat Vindman by 12 points! Men know women are fully capable leaders & team players. Women can win, often better than men. Why suppress our greatness? Male insecurities, that’s it.

I live, temporarily, in a red town blanketed with giant warehouses and data centers, more to come. The companies import their tech folks from HQ, if any, and the only jobs are security and janitor, and those are low-pay jobs with a vendor company. So no, you won’t get an Apple/Meta/etc entry job.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Hassett: "Data centers are very good for towns bc they create so many jobs & bring people in with high incomes that can buy houses & stuff like that. So if you take a sleepy town that hasn't seen much in the last 30 years & put a data center there, there are gonna be a bunch of happy residents."

Great article. I was an early adopter of the Mac for graphic design and web coding. I still use Apple stuff but Steve’s baby grew up into a slimy techbro. Having other Luddite interests (weaving, spinning, sailing, farming) I love that my forebears were political, directed, and worker-centric.

Trump et al is what you get when you vote businessmen into government. The corruption, the self-dealing, the incompetence, the yes men, all are abundant in corporate VP floors and C suites. They hate employees, and citizens look like employees to them. Business is about (their) profit, so QED.

"And so perhaps they’re in the back seat with a toy steering wheel. AI is the promise of wiring that toy steering wheel directly into the drivetrain of the car. It’s products without product designers. Workplaces without workers.... This is the promise." www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

theguardian.com‘You can’t make billions without hurting people’: Cory Doctorow on Elon Musk, the AI bubble and bosses’ cruel fantasiesThe writer who coined the word ‘enshittification’ tells us why AI will never deliver what it promises – and why it still appeals so much to those in power

These are the people who want to buy the country and put it on autopilot.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

"Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that that would produce a high-quality product." Holy cow, Ford bought the AI hype, believing they could go "hey computer, make me a good car" and it would.

21st century America is a multiracial democracy whose commerce, culture and cuisine reflect the influence of immigrants from every country on earth. The only people seemingly unable to assimilate into this society are white Republicans.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Tom Emmer: "Minnesotans are so afraid that you're gonna call us a racist, you're gonna call us an Islamophobe. You know what? I'm done being even the least bit careful. Somalis don't assimilate. And if they don't assimilate, then they should go the hell back to where they came from."

More folks calling for this today. Yes!

I will pay good money for 15 minutes with a sledgehammer in that wedding cake travesty of a ballroom. I’m sure there are others who want, even need, that closure. This is not just a fundraising opportunity, it’s a step towards a national reconciliation. Let us do it!

Private equity is destroying whole industries because people don’t want to work or shop there. The contempt has become mutual now. But the C-suites don’t care, because their need to erase humanity from profit feels nearly complete.

Continual growth, that fantasy corporate capitalism is built on, demands new sources of income so capitalism has to exploit every element of operation to please stockholders who expect bigger & bigger returns. This has been a multi- decade effort to funnel corporate profits away from employees...

... infrastructure, customer support and R&D. The recipients are obviously corporate officers, boards and stockholders. 6. When decisions are made at those levels, the actual operational knowledge of running a business is sidelined and the cannibalism of the marketplace becomes self- destruction.

The smugness, the disdain and the intentional incompetence is obvious. 4. Intentional incompetence, by the way, was perfected by Charter Communications, and probably all cable companies ever since the 80s when the cable industry was rewarded with monopolies in their service areas.

No competition means customers can suck it when service outages are common and billing mistakes are even more common. When customers get too frustrated to complain, the company can pocket the overcharges. 5. Overcharges, fees and price hikes are profit centers now.

The main line item that was fungible? Labor. Managers ran on skeleton staffs to get bigger monthly bonuses. It was encouraged by upper mgmt. and an anti-employee vibe was prevalent. 2. The development of automated phone systems means they can fire most low level customer service folk.

This is the tech version of “talk to the hand.” Companies don’t publish their contact info at all now, forcing you to use buggy website forms to communicate with mgmt. 3. AI will now take care of most mid-level employees as well, and the corporate glee at paying even fewer human beings is palpable.

1. Most prominently, corporations’ hatred of paying employees. I can attest to this having worked for Pillsbury as a chain restaurant manager in the 70s. One main task each month was to construct a P&L for that unit, and the managers’ bonuses depended on the bottom line.
