Never attribute to malice what you can attribute to laziness. As someone who spent a decade in political communications and corporate PR, the straight answer is that either she or her reps reached out to the NYT and offered to provide quotes. And lazy reporters gratefully accepted the offer.

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

Also, I'd love to know how two different stories -- each written by three reporters, with no overlap in the authors -- managed to find Jolene Riessen and make her the stand-in for apolitical Iowa farmers.

There are only two explanations for the NYT's habit of presenting GOP operatives and donors as true swing voters: 1. Their reporters and editors are somehow incapable of running a simple Google searches, showing just a staggering level of journalistic incompetence 2. They want to the GOP to win

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

These people have cooked their brains to the extent that they literally cannot complete simple, normal human tasks without being augmented by machines which think for them. This is not a social improvement. It's a disability.

As I've said, this is either an impeachable offense that Democrats act on or it's a new precedent.

So many people seem to think the midterms will be a blowout for the Democrats but I suspect they underestimate how much rural Republican farmers who are about to lose everything they have because of Trump want to hear him talk about his gay fantasies on stage every night

This is literally the end of the rule of law. If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

We actually just don’t have a rule of law at the federal level if he does this. And I don’t think any sane reading of the Founding Fathers would indicate they expected the pardon power to be this sweeping.

Replying to @murshedz.bsky.social

The reports of the Trump regime contemplating massive pardons for junior staffers for committing potential crimes is another reason why rebalancing and restructuring the Roberts MAGA #SCOTUS needs to be in the HR1 in 2029 if the Dems control both the WH & Congress.

Do not recognize pardons granted to unindicted individuals. Democrats must make it clear — well before inauguration of the next president — that Trump administration staff will be investigated and potentially prosecuted regardless.

The Republican Party has all the values and tactics of a white supremacist prison gang and maybe it's time to stop normalizing them as if they were a modern functioning political party

This dishonorable dipshit should be asked by a reporter if he's familiar with Admiral Michael Boorda, the former top Navy officer who killed himself in 1996 after being outed for this exact same thing. Unlike Flippo, Boorda didn't whine and blame his grandkids. He went out like a samurai.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

When it came out that the Nevada Republican David Flippo’s campaign had falsely claimed he received a Bronze Star with valor, there was just one problem, the Air Force veteran, wore a hat with V-shaped emblems for years. His new explanation? His grandkids added the Vs without him noticing.

The quality and variety of loose-leaf tea available in the U.S. is unbelievably better than 20 years ago, mostly because of the internet. I can do a face-to-face video call with a small, artisan tea maker in Myanmar or Laos or the Georgian Caucasus and arrange DHL air freight to Dallas pretty easy.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Also, YouTube do-it-yourself videos. I changed my car's engine and passenger compartment air filters the other day and saved $150. Would've had no idea where they were even located without the internet.

This is a good thread. Importantly, it's also worth noting that all the improvements people are naming were once fiercely resisted by Republicans. Some examples:

Nationalizing Elon Musk's companies (or anyone's companies) would probably poll poorly right now, so consultants will insist it's a losing issue. But I'm pretty sure if Democrats went all-out on a persuasion campaign, explaining Mamdani-style *why* it's necessary, it would become a winning issue.

Everything is worse: Popular and historic 80-year-old theater in Dallas has been sold to a bathhouse chain with owners in New York

The last waltz for Dallas' Granada will be April 17, give or take. The last supper at Sundown will come next week. The Granada has long been one of my favorite live-music venues; yours, too, likely. But in the end, I guess, we're all just temporary custodians. www.dallasnews.com/opinion/comm...

Maybe it makes me a credentialist, but I hate how we constantly elevate guys like Yglesias — who have no relevant education or work experience. In politics, he's never run for office, worked on a campaign or served as an appointee. On policy, he has a BA and has never worked in government.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

We often turn to industry outsiders for analysis, but traditionally when this is done, they're either former insiders or they're academics with advanced degrees who've spent years studying the topic. Yglesias and so many others have neither. They're just well-spoken bloggers and entertainers.

Remarkable. I don't know how to explain what journalism is to two of the largest media outlets in America. Journalism is not repeating an obvious, comical lie, then tacking on who said it at the end.
