🏺🧪 The genetic history of humans in pre-LGM Upper Palaeolithic Europe gets even more complex with more ancient genomes and some ingenious use of sedimentary DNA. Also casually identify that two burials from Ostuni Cave represent a mother and her son.

We show that Teshik-Tash 1 was on the West Eurasian Neandertal lineage that leads to the Late Neandertals, and split from this lineage between ~100k and ~80k years BP. Despite the geographical proximity to the Denisovan range, we do not find any evidence for Denisovan ancestry in his genome. (5/7)

Check out our preprint for more information! This is only the first version, and will surely improve after peer review, but we hope that you will enjoy this version in the meantime. Our tool is up and running on github.com/BenjaminPete.... (6/7)

They also contain high levels of contaminant DNA from people living today (or in the recent past), especially if they were excavated a long time ago. Because of this, it is often not possible to obtain enough ancient DNA to investigate their population affinities using existing methods. (3/7)

To overcome this, we developed admixslug, a conditional site frequency spectrum based method to co-estimate contamination and population relationships for a target archaic human genome. Using admixslug, we find that Teshik-Tash 1 genome is highly contaminated, even in the deaminated sequences. (4/7)

We use it to shed light on the genetic history of the Teshik-Tash 1 child, excavated in the 30s in present-day Uzbekistan, marking the southeastern-most extent of the known Neandertal range. Most Neandertal remains yield very little ancient DNA, especially if they come from warmer regions. (2/7)

Check out our new review: Ancient DNA in motion! We examine how the integration of archaeogenomic data with archaeological evidence can help reconstruct past human mobility and interactions, as well as their consequences, while also addressing key terminological and interpretive limitations.
