My Torts professor - who is so unbelievably inspiring - told us a heartbreaking, yet hopeful story tonight - then ended with these words: “Freedom of expression is priceless . . . Without New York Times v. Sullivan - there is nothing left of Democracy.”

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

This Sunday, Historians At The Movies takes on THE 13TH WARRIOR (1999)! Join us as we talk cultural encounters, the making of monsters, and what happens when Hollywood throws Ibn Fadlan and Beowulf into the same longship. Prime Video, 8pm eastern. #HATM Hit the share button.

Finished Crystal Lake this afternoon. It was so good. Explained Jason Voorhees - his death, how he’s able to stay alive, and his mothers descent. I absolutely loved it. Linda Cardellini was an excellent Pam Voorhees. It really was a great tribute to the franchise. #HATM

Reminder for the folks at Historians at the Movies #hatm tonight that ‘Ready or Not’ was filmed at the lovely McLaughlin Estate called Parkwood in Oshawa, Ontario with a whole passel of Canadian actors as the family members.

1. The Tudor Dynasty 2. I’m not sure we have any that are weird. Hubs just said my parents are pretty bland. 😂😂 3. Turkey, Dressing sandwich from Firehouse. OMG! It’s so good! #HATM

Tonight’s #HATM questions: 1. What U.S. family dynasty would you not be surprised had made a deal w/ the devil requiring blood? (Too dark? lol) 2. What family ritual in your fam was weird to introduce to those marrying in? 3. What’s on the menu at your place tonight?

Our guest host for tonight!! I’m so excited and I was hoping our own #HATM horror historian might take the reins this evening to round out our spooky season extravaganza!! 9 minutes and counting for Ready or Not! #HATM

And welcome to Historians at the Movies! Tonight we are live posting READY OR NOT on Netflix in our Halloween Special! If you thought your in-laws were bad, wait until you meet Fitch’s. It is a dark horror comedy but we hope you’ll hang in there even if horror isn’t your thing. 1/

Part of my professor’s summary of the dissent’s argument in J.D.B v North Carolina: “Yes, kids are more susceptible to pressure; I get it, I watch Saved by the Bell” buuuuut . . . OMG! I’m cracking up. 😂 He’s such a phenomenal professor!

I love this movie! #HATM nailed spooky season this year! Glad to finish it off with this firecracker of a movie. I think the kids these days call it a banger! Sunday night - hope to see everyone there!

Old money. Old rituals. Fresh blood. This Sunday, Oct 25 at 8pm eastern, Historians At The Movies watches READY OR NOT (2019) on Netflix, a wedding-night nightmare that asks a historical question: what will wealthy families do to preserve their power? Till death do us part. #HATM

Watching the first episode of Crystal Lake. The music is a huge nod to the original movie (which I love), the font for the intro is a tribute to part 3, and Linda Cardellini wearing the Grey cable-knit sweater is a chef’s kiss. I’m loving it so far! #HATM

1. A movie I watched way too young: Wizard of Gore. 2. Drowning 3. Chicken fajitas I wrote about 3 horrors sub genres and my experience with Wizard of Gore in @americanstudier.bsky.social’s American Studies Blogspot back in 2019. #HATM americanstudier.blogspot.com/2019/10/octo...

And that's a wrap here at Historians At The Movies! Thanks to everyone for coming out tonight. #HATM

What if the ending was different and it was really her husband doing this to her somehow so he could be with his student. It’s not so far fetched. He is such a scumbag. #HATM

Showing off the painting we (me, my kids, & husband) did during lockdown. You can see Candyman on the left looking scary & adorable for his class photo. There are 32 horror references here. Can you identify them all? #HATM

It seems like the writers were confused between what academics think "being published" means and what, you made the local papers and now publishers are interested means. #HATM #Candyman

Tony Todd has such a commanding voice . Like Robert, England as Freddie and Doug Bradley’s pinhead, nobody really accepts anyone but him in this role. #HATM

OH. MY. GOSH! There he is! Tony Todd! Legend! 🔥 #HATM "I am the writing on the wall, the whisper in the classroom. Without these things, I am nothing. So, I must shed innocent blood."

Her: we’re not ready to show you our work yet. Him: well this is where I can be most helpful. Her: we just went to CG today Him: Oh CG, you must read my article on the subject (and here’s everything I know about the subject even though you didn’t ask) #HATM

The lady playing Ann Marie also played in the original Melrose Place. Her character was a dancer and she was always the voice of reason in the group. Loved her character and yeah, I loved that show - up to season 2. 😂😂 #HATM

We now have tonight’s character that is collectively hated by the #HATM crowd. Did not take long for for him to make the list. He is truly a pile of crap. #HATM

HistorySmith@historysmith.bsky.social

Does Trevor die? Please tell me Trevor dies. #SpoliersNoSpoilers #HATM

1. Anastasia Romanov’s survival 2. Navajo Weapon: Navajo Code Talkers by Sally McClain 3. Some type of meat loaf product. #HATM

Jason Herbert@herberthistory.bsky.social

That brings us to tonight's #HATM questions: 1) what is your favorite urban legend? 2) since tomorrow is Indigenous Peoples Day, what is your favorite book on Native history? 3) and what is on the menu at your home tonight?
