Ariel Salminen

New website launch day! 📮 I handcrafted a super simple new site for myself to better showcase what I do and have a future home for experiments I may want to tinker with. Designed in the browser using HTML, CSS, and a tiny bit of plain JavaScript. Powered by @11ty.dev as usual: arielsalminen.com

*brb, renaming primitive design tokens to hunter-gatherer tokens*

I’m still very much enjoying working on the web platform.

What if there was a Web Components conference?? @stuffbreaker.bsky.social and I are teaming up to get a little more serious about the idea of getting one together. We want to gather data on if there is interest in the community forms.gle/ZGqtYGj7V6q8... Please fill out and share to anyone!

Bluesky friends, very sadly (for me) I need to sell my beloved Wilma. She’s a 1988 T25 VW Campervan, complete with checkerboard floor and fold out bed, recently serviced and MOT’d. If you or anyone you know is interested please let me know - would love her to go to someone nice 🧡

feels like it’s inevitable these days that every tool you rely on is one garbage founder or funder away from their app’s version of this post

Current status: fixing yet another bicycle (to sell it) 🤷🏻‍♀️ *I think the kids are getting slightly annoyed that I’ve turned our living room into a bike shop, basically*

Thanks GitHub

Anxiously waiting for a new bike frame to arrive today (yeah… yet another side project 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Gathering parts for a new Raspberry Pi side project. The rest is still in transit 🤓

Sold our car and somehow made profit doing that, at least compared to what I originally paid for it 🤷🚴🏻‍♀️

Got completely soaked on this ride. Literally had to stop and pour water out of my shoes a couple of times 🌊

A random view from today’s bike ride. The piece on the underpass wall says “Girls are awesome” ❤️

Monday after work ride with 🧡. (featuring a tiny friend who liked my bike 🐤)

Rarely active here anymore, but dropping by to say that I will have availability for freelance web/dataviz accessibility work again soon: - Reviews, audits - Consulting, advice - Training, talks, workshops - Front-end dev 🫶🏻 Interested? DM or collab@fossheim.io #accessibility #datavizA11Y

It's often uneasy for me to share my experiences as a woman in tech, but this job market has me worried for everyone stuck somewhere harmful. I admire everyone who takes on "women in tech" speaking gigs but I am also angry for them and us. ohhelloana.blog/woman-in-tec...

ã = a with a toupee á = it’s windy, toupee flyin up à = ope wind changed direction ă = where is this wind coming from ą = ah shit it fell on the ground â = well now it looks ridiculous

I’ve been working with a client who runs a lot of social media and ad campaigns, so we’ve been deploying the experimental `No-Vary-Search HTTP` header. It’s amazing to see it actually working! Read all about it here: csswizardry.com/2026/05/bett...

Pretty test runner output from the Kesko Design System. Colors inherited from my terminal theme. 👩🏻‍💻 *Alt:* Terminal screenshot of the Kesko Design System test runner, with a coral pink ASCII-art “K” logo. All 87 test files and 2,831 tests across 13 test suites passed in 42.66 seconds.

“So, in short: you now have an LLM running on your machine, and any website you visit can make use of it, and whatever processing resources it requires.” The definitive piece on Google participating in the web standards process “the way a bear participates in the ‘camping’ process.”, by @wil.to 👏

Happy 23rd Birthday CSS Zen Garden! In May 2003 the Canadian web designer Dave Shea launched a community gallery of websites called CSS Zen Garden. #WebDesignHistory

*don’t mind me I am just here collecting old Shimano parts from all over to fix my bike* (dura ace bits are for the new bike though)

Just seen <div role="button" aria-hidden="true" tabindex="0"/>

Github downtime since the Microsoft acquisition

Saw this headline: “Ads are coming to Apple Maps this summer” …and momentarily my brain parsed it as: “Legs are coming to Apple Maps this summer” I’ve been ruined by tech

I'm really tired of seeing "women in tech" panels that talk about all the things women can do to help not be pushed out of tech. I reckon I could fill an entire hour's talk with the things men have said and done to me to make me unsafe working in this industry.

Mat Marquis has waited 14 years to write this article. The sizes attribute has been a necessary evil but now, with an auto value capability, it’s completely transformed authoring responsive images on the web. piccalil.li/blog/the-end...

i’ve worked in tech more than 20 years. it has never been more ridiculous.

Working with these internet speeds over the past weeks have made me focus on improving the performance of everything I’ve touched at work. Also, reminded me of something that I wrote in April 11 years ago which somehow feels even more relevant in 2026: arielsalminen.com/2015/the-man...

@studioromeo.co.uk Managed to semi destroy my existing road bike yesterday in a crash and now pondering whether to start fixing it with new parts (would be thousands of €) or replace it with a new road bike. 🙃

Evenings like this 🧡
