The US is putting a new world order on the table, one based on autocracy, the use of force, and nativism. For the transatlantic relationship, the result has been fusing threats to sovereignty with the promotion of far-right forces that are a threat to democracy, and pushing tech deregulation.

The main gist of my argument is that European allies will face interoperability and integration challenges with less US. To overcome these shortfalls, NATO needs to be prepared to transition rapidly from peacetime to war. If not, slow decision-making by Europeans will cede the advantage to Russia.

SACEUR laid out a 'theory of victory' for NATO at WSF. Yet that theory is still premised on the assumption that US reinforcements will show up when needed and is underpinned by US doctrine. Instead, European NATO should be contingency planning in the event the US *isn't* there.

@icds-tallinn.bsky.social has undertaken the noble task to examine exactly what 'Europeanising NATO' means in practice in a series of policy briefs. In my contribution, I unpacked what a European of war with less US in NATO looks like.

Finally read the new AfD strategy paper on Europe. It casts 2029 as a “historic window” to reorient the EU’s foundations through Treaty change, with a right-wing majority in the EP and a German government with AfD participation both within reach. Thread on some notable points:

Competitiveness, sovereignty, innovation. I reckon we'll hear these words just a few times during Thursday's SOTEU. But how does Europe achieve them? Public equity markets can play an important role - funding European bets on new technologies and scale. Yet Europe is falling behind. 1/8 🧵

Absolutely dramatic defeat for CDU and victory for AfD. Main question is: will BSW make it into parliament. Currently AfD is estimated at 39 seats, BSW at 5 (out of 83). AfD majority is unlikely, but still possible.

Super interesting piece, which also raises lots of questions for those constantly learning lessons from the war for NATO's future fight with Russia.

I don't think we've come to terms with how big a project it will be to unwind all these equity positions the US govt is taking under Trump, especially given the degree of corrupt self-dealing among the Trump family involved, which this article points to.

Europeans would be well advised to believe that positions like those of J. Kavanagh & Justin Logan will gain currency with post-Trump administrations regardless of whether Republican or Democrat. And act accordingly working towards taking 🇪🇺defense fully into European hands.

You heard it here first @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/4Vcu... If true and it goes ahead, this would align with the mutual defence clause in the Kensington Treaty.
