Politik wird zunehmend akademisch. Und zunehmend zur Berufspolitik. Perspektiven anderer gesellschaftlicher Bereiche fehlen. So weit, so bekannt. Doch warum wird dann weiter die „Elite“ gewählt? Neue Dlf Systemfragen - Warum Politik so elitär bleibt. share.deutschlandradio.de/dlf-audiothe...

New WP with brilliant co-author @jacobnyrup.bsky.social! Which governments are most representative? We match the backgrounds of tens of thousands of cabinet ministers to population data in 136 countries (1991-2021) and measure the representation gap on gender, age, education, class and geography.

It's finally publication day for this decade-in-the-making book. @noamlupu.bsky.social and I explain why working-class jobs make up 70% of the average democracy's labor force, but only 2% of the average democracy's national lawmakers had working-class jobs when they got into politics.

“Of the 919 candidates running as major-party nominees for the US House and Senate this November, only seven had a working-class job when they got into politics. That’s less than 1%, despite working-class jobs making up about half of the US labor force.” @carnes.bsky.social and I explain why.

Very cool paper! 👇

🧵 Just accepted @thejop.bsky.social, with @tswalve.bsky.social "What's in a name? Name recognition, place-based identities, and candidate success" Voters prefer local candidates. But how do they know who's local? Often simply from the name on the ballot👇 www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

We chair an open panel on "New Cleavage Identities" at the DVPW Convention 2027. Questions: Which identities are emerging as new cleavage identities? How do they form and stabilize? How do elites construct and mobilize them? How do they affect vote choice? CfP: www.dvpw.de/dvpw2027/en/...

@christinajuen.bsky.social & I are very happy to see our first publication of our @dfg.de project published in Party Politics. GLMP provides a new dataset for studying local party politics in 🇩🇪: 2,307 manifestos from 306 political actors in 248 municipalities (1989-2024) doi.org/10.1177/1354...

After Saxony-Anhalt, next Sunday's regional vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania could be even more devastating for the Christian Democrats. If current trends continue, the SPD may end up in first place, ahead of the AfD. The Greens and BSW are struggling to clear the electoral threshold, but...

...also the Christian Democrats have been steadily losing support. They are now dangerously close to falling below the 5% threshold, which would be an unprecedented event. As the campaign focuses on the duel between the SPD and the AfD, the Christian Democrats continue to lose ground.

The upcoming election could deal a blow to the federal government. Schwesig is campaigning against the Berlin government, making the SPD less likely to support the current policy agenda. Meanwhile, Merz appears weak and will only become weaker following a disastrous CDU result in the Northeast.

Another great article from our SI on the 2025 GER election is out! Roßteutscher et al. find that “young men on lower tracks are the most likely to support the right-wing populist AfD, and that the political climate in their educational contexts amplifies this association.” doi.org/10.1016/j.el...

Interesting first insights of an ongoing survey 👇

Nils Steiner@nilssteiner.bsky.social

What do yesterday’s ST results imply for liberal democracy? In our ongoing nationwide survey, we asked about support for liberal democracy (following doi.org/10.1177/0010...). Acceptance of & ambivalence toward illiberal action are worryingly widespread, though majorities reject each transgression.
