If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Narko-krigen, nå mer bokstavelig enn noen gang, mislykkes, som vanlig. "Record supplies of cocaine still arrive in the U.S., Europe and as far away as Australia every day, cheaper and purer than they’ve been in decades, said law-enforcement officials across four continents."

Thus if descriptive representation matters, either for normative reasons or because of its positive empirical consequences, relying on democratization or economic development alone will not be sufficient.

Surprisingly, most of the reduction in representation gaps comes from population change. As countries grow richer and more democratic, populations get older and less working class. Cabinets hardly change. The exception is gender: Democratization is robustly associated with more women in cabinets.

We theorize that democracy and economic development should reduce gaps, through different mechanisms: Democracy should change the social composition of governments, while development changes populations to become more like typical cabinet ministers (e.g. more educated).

We find, across machine learning models, cross-sectional models and panel fixed effects models, that democracy and development are among the strongest predictors of descriptive representation. Representation gaps are smallest in Scandinavia and largest in Cambodia, Eritrea, and North Korea.

The larger gap in left-right self-placement among the young mainly comes from young women. They're clearly more left-wing than older women, while the difference between young and older men is smaller. In some countries, young men are actually to the right of older men.

As an aside, this was my most rejected paper, turned down by six (!) journals, often for not being interesting enough. But it's also my most read one, viewed/downloaded almost 12,000 times already, so we're very happy that some people found it interesting anyway! 😁

In the appendix, among other things, we also break the results down by age. Among under-40s, women on average place themselves clearly to the left of men. Among people 60 and over, there's almost no gender gap in left-right self-placement.

Among the five attitude dimensions, the biggest generational difference is on immigration. There's a clear gender gap among the young, none among the old. Gaps on the environment and gender equality are about the same across age groups.

New working paper. We propose a theory of dynamic identity-based linkages between voters and parties. We base this theory on models of expressive voting where voting signifies joining a community of social groups of voters. People have a sense of which parties are associated with which groups.
