Cars and retro games from Japan. Mostly. Again.

It's seemed weird to me that there was never a collection of Final Fight Games, seems like it would be a slam dunk with plenty of name recognition, a couple of really expensive rarities, lots of ports to compare and contrast features, etc. Will have to keep an eye on this one.

Korean Ratings Board Lists Capcom Console Releases Inc. NES & SNES Final Fight, Mega Man, & Breath of Fire Games

Mole Mania is absolute genius, so this is very welcome news indeed (maybe I'll even beat it one of these days, after stalling out on the GB original and 3DS download). Avenging Spirit and Revenge of the Gator aren't bad at all either, as I recall.

Unfortunately US TV is becoming too much like Japanese TV in this respect. Even during commercial breaks it seems that there are certain celebrities that you CAN'T escape from (looking at you Abe Hiroshi, Ayase Haruka, ex-Johnny's anything, and now uh, Kevin Hart?)

Honestly I just want all stars to stop doing ads. I know why they do them and it’s a free country blah blah blah but it sucks balls

Without hyperbole, non-Nintendo console gaming is going to be paying four figures for the ability to play maybe 10-ish AAA games a year, none of which you will meaningfully (physically) own. A) I want no part of this, and B), there's a very real risk that the industry collapses upon itself.

does feel like an era of video gaming is ending right now

Uhh, there was a Game of Life Spinner custom controller for the Switch? I wonder how accurate it is to the original.

Wrecking Crew '98 on the Super Famicom includes the original Wrecking Crew as a bonus, and I've gotta say it feels absolutely bizarre to be playing a straight-up Famicom port on the SFC. I don't think there were too many of these, if any others even exist.

Found at least one more... Caravan Shooting Collection (from Hudson) has straight-up Famicom ports of Star Force, Star Soldier, and Hector '87. Will have to keep an eye out for others.

Lufia I & II getting modern ports...? Seems like a no-brainer. Hope that English versions will also be included.

(For the record, I don't mean this as some kind of "ha ha, look at this English" type deal. Instead, I'm impressed. Why? 1. They didn't have to give this song lyrics in the first place. 2. They definitely didn't need to translate the lyrics into English. 3. It's kind of an earworm.)

I think every SVX owner should have a personalized license plate with "SVX" written on it somewhere. It's the only way.

Boy2 spotted this today. Assume this isn’t yours @blacktopmagazine.bsky.social ?

In all seriousness, I learned a lot about leadership from Peter Cullen's portrayal of Optimus Prime. "Be strong enough to be gentle" is an incredible concept. RIP.

An early ad for the original Super Mario Bros. On the Famicom. Get a flower to become Fire Mario, get a star to become invincible, get a mushroom to become super. Believe it or not. There was a time when this all wasn't unspoken common knowledge.

🕹️ Super Mario Brothers 📚 Family Computer Magazine 5 👤 @gamingalexandria.bsky.social

From the "You never really know" file: in the July 2002 issue of Game Informer, Metroid Prime and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (both stone-cold classics) got these scathing write-ups in the magazine's annual E3 report. Hopefully, whoever wrote these got assigned to GI Vault cleanup duty.

I must have only kept the cover of this TV Bros. (think of a more stylish TV Guide) because of the Yoda/Clone Wars cover art. Even now, I don't think that I recognize a single name on there (apart from Shinjo, who is a baseball player).

You can own a MotorWeek track cone! Straight from the slalom, these cones have been used (and abused) over the years by the MotorWeek Road Test crew. Limited to a 30-unit run, each cone is signed and numbered by John Davis himself. BUY HERE: mpt-shop.myshopify.c...

JALECOlle Famicom Ver. +α #2: Shatterhand! this game was originally dev'd by Natsume & published by Angel for Famicom as a tie-in to the tokusatsu show Solbrain, but retooled as an original game for its Jaleco-pub'd NA NES release—it's never been reissued & JP fans specifically want Shatterhand

The previously unreleased D-Hopper and Zero Racers for Virtual Boy are listed under "Nintendo Classics" in the Nintendo Switch Online application, which is both weird and kind of cool at the same time.

VERTEXER ALERT

VGDensetsu@vgdensetsu.bsky.social

Tomoaki Okada even illustrated the cancelled arcade game Vertexer (~1993) and there are chances he illustrated a few other Taito games. He also did some illustrations for the first 2 GunGriffon (including the box art for the 2nd episode + 2 unidentified illustrations for the 1st one). 2/3

I think not enough attention is paid to Game Tengoku, specifically for 1) just how flat out weird it is, and 2) surprisingly, the amazing quality of the graphics. Endless gaming spoofs incorporated onto the gameplay? Check. Tons of massive, screen-filling sprites with no slowdown? Check.

I feel like I should also mention Game Tengoku has one of the nicest main menu/option select screens that I've seen, featuring a really nice, large animated & voiced character sprite. Again, just really high production values from a game that doesn't have the highest profile in the industry.

Was going through some vintage electronics and found these totally bitching AA batteries which clearly hadn't been touched in decades. Looks like Kodak outsourced this production, I wonder who actually made these? Panasonic? Maxwell?

One of the unique features on select IREM cartridges was a red LED on top of it that lit up when the Nintendo Famicom was powered on. A 1986 patent in Japan lists Miho Hashimoto and Nobuko Kawato of IREM for this. Scott Tsumura came up with the idea as a way to know when the Famicom was on.(1/2)

Didn't have a lot of luggage space, but here are some pickups from my latest trip to Japan. Kind of a grab bag of random stuff; I picked up whatever looked interesting (and didn't break the bank). I think I had good reasons for getting each one.

Uhh, what now? This is actually brilliant, and opens up all kinds of new gameplay ideas.

Gameplay of Galaga Kai, a keitai game that was preserved last year! Its Arrange Mode features stages and boss battles based on #Namco properties. You can see quite a few in this video, including a Mappy boss! Thanks to the OpenDoja reimplementation, this game now runs with no performance issues.

For example, from this stage alone, new gameplay wrinkles include a) you have to shoot through the dirt to reach enemies, b) enemies can take multiple hits and return to their original state if not popped, c) fygars attack horizontally, a new attack pattern from the original Also it looks cool

I've always felt that the original Gradius Generations/Galaxies is top tier and already a classic in its own right (this is actually the game that really got me into the series), but it got a bad rep due to being "hard to see" on the original GBA's poor screen. Still, nice to see something new.

timeextension.com"The GBA Is So Back" - Gradius Advance Gets A Comprehensive Fan-Made Upgrade"I truly believe this game has now secured its spot as a Gradius classic"

I remember reading about this back in the day and thinking that it must be some kind of joke, but no, this was apparently a very real thing that actually existed

Virtua Hamster is one of SEGA's more unusual lost projects. Think S.T.U.N Runner with rodents. Nearly finished on 32X, but cancelled before release, with a Saturn version never even started.

URGENT ALERT (Actually, Beep's current basement location is almost terrifyingly cramped and claustrophobic even by Tokyo standards, so a move to a new location might not be the worst thing in the world.)

From April 1990's issue of Famitsu: Design documents from the very first Dragon Quest game. We can see on the right how the original slime design went from the kind of horror you'd see in an early Wizardry to the cute blob iconic to the game and then into pixel form!
