Hey all! A little introduction post: I’m a freelancer based in the UK working in game audio, before that I was freelancing in film & TV for 6 years. Favourite game is Apex Legends Pronouns are they/them Hoping to connect with other game devs and audio people ☺️

Because vibecoded vst plugins are flooding the market with slop these days I have been collecting a list of audio developers that explicitly state on their website that their code is not generated by AI. I think it's time to share the ones I have so far in a little thread i'll keep expanding:

My favourite part is where the crosshair is over the drone but the bullets are hitting the box instead, with the text saying, “I think it’s ready” Fuck it, ship the slop!

Who is this aimed for? Surely not devs? People who don’t have time to learn and just want to make a game It’s Guitar Hero but for game dev

Meeting up with friends who have been on a TV show the last 4 months to hear how they’ve been driving home half asleep and nearly crashed several times is not fun

I used to work in production for film & tv and done way too many hours of work in a day and it burnt me out. It’s so normalised to do 11 hour days plus several hours of overtime. No time for family, friends, hobbies, having a life outside of work is impossible

Ayo, am I connected with any Community Managers in the game space that are looking for work now or within the next 6months? Feel free to drop me a line in the comments or DM me.

How good could active noise canceling in headphones get?

It’s really one of the tightest time constraints in computing. Obviously, sound hits the microphone first *before* hitting your eardrum…but that’s only about 10 microseconds.

No middleware! Big Walk's sound is implemented using our custom tool-set @nicholaszhangaudio.bsky.social made himself, called Cuttle. We use it often so check it out if you're interested! 😉 ashellinthepit.com/content/cutt...

I really loved the sound of the stage speakers echoing off the canyon. Were the game's effects done with Unity's programmable audio filters? I remember those helped a lot with per-emitter effects not commonly seen in games. Or is it using middleware?

Lots of excitement about the squeaky beach sounds in Big Walk! You'll all be happy to know it's the real thing! Was absolutely giddy to get to record them on an actual Australian squeaky beach in Wilson's Promontory. Yes, if you didn't know some beaches there really do squeak. It is pure joy.

I’ve been trying out new mice and one of them being the Logitech Lift. I thought I’d like a vertical mouse but it doesn’t hug my hand like I wanted it to. Honestly feels less comfortable than my Logitech Pro Lightspeed. So instead I’m trying out a Kensington trackball… 🧵

Also the ball matches my nails. The scroll wheel thing is a little disappointing, I thought it would be clicky? Feels kinda loose. The buttons are great and you can map them, even map two buttons being pressed at the same time

This thing is smaller than I was expecting? I don’t know why i thought it would be huge, I guess it gives huge vibes. I thought they’d be a period of getting used to a trackball but it feels really easy to use, at least for me. Feels great to use and comfortable

Went to an arcade in Halifax that had a framed portrait of Shigeru Miyamoto looking like he's about to be at the center of a murder mystery in the pacific northwest

This!! Everybody else is chasing trends for money and short term gains. Building your foundations on a good strong vision and growing steadily and organically is much more sustainable imo

Goddamn

Implemented the ability to layer an extra sound that changes depending on the card rarity when opening a pack. Haven't made the sound yet so just pulled from some dev sounds I recorded of me counting. No need for gen AI, obviously a placeholder. Anyone else got examples of their placeholders?
