Hollywood did the same thing in the wake of the Great Depression about a hundred years ago. And what happened? The workers unionized. And then game studios are SHOCKED when game workers follow the same playbook they are. Spoiler alert: we win in the end!
I THINK one of the things we're really seeing is a continent, maybe industry-wide shift away from full-time employees and towards gig/codev work. And that transition looks like layoffs across the board even from studios that just had big successes.

Activision union workers begin fundraising to prepare for possible strike

These striking devs are not just fighting for their own quality of life, they’re fighting for all of us in the industry, to show that we as workers have the right to dignity, and a right to the billions of dollars our labor generates for our employers. I donated $100, who will match me?
Last week, after two years of bargaining attempts, members of Activision Quality Assurance United voted to authorize a potential strike. If you want to support these workers in their standoff which stands to establish precedent and set baselines for the entire industry, now's your chance:

So I think everyone understands this already, but this is basically a euphemism for "we're hiring fewer full time employees and more contractors and codev studios because we don't have to pay them as much." I wish I could say this was an isolated case but I'm seeing it p much everywhere.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

If game studios are shifting to the Hollywood model, game workers are going to have to shift more quickly to the union model in order to survive.
Lower pay? Not usually. It’s just so they don’t have to fire folks once their job is done. They can just be reassigned by their actual company to a new project at another studio. It’s the Hollywood model, basically. The whole industry is semi-pivoting that way.

after two years of bargaining thanks to activision's stall tactics, unionized workers have authorized a strike. I spoke to them, as well as an ex-employee with disability issues who was basically forced out of the company due to the return-to-office policies the union has been trying to fight

The employment tribunal between the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and GTA 6 maker Rockstar games was due to conclude this Friday, but the legal case has now been extended into November. https://bit.ly/4s6wzy2
(She is legally obligated to say this btw, joining a union is a legal right in many countries, including the UK)
Rockstar is currently embroiled in a legal battle after firing 34 staff, most of whom were involved in unionization efforts. When I asked Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe about voluntary recognition, she said: "We go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union.”

"This is your crisis, this is your failure:" Inside the global battle to preserve remote working at Ubisoft The Assassin's Creed publisher wants all employees to work in-office five days per week, but unions in Milan and Montreal have mobilised in defiance
As more campaigns go public (and win!), you may see an uptick in union-busting rhetoric and behavior from companies, managers, and even your misinformed fellow worker. Don't fall for it. Check out CWA's Union Busting Playbook to familiarize yourself with typical tactics. unionbustingplaybook.com
