After listening to a composer discuss how ai is transforming & destroying his industry, I was driven to create this piece. Embroidered on my hand-controlled #chainstitchembroidery machine w my interpretation of a famous woodcut of a Luddite destroying a jacquard loom. #fiberart #generativeai

I'm gonna be obsessing about this, can some photographers weigh in? Or people that attended the rally for Hourcar?

Aunt Fancy@auntiefancy.bsky.social

This story is important, but unrelated to the content there is something bizarre about photo the Strib used of the rally on 10/13. It REALLY looks like AI. Image on left is from @czbi.org bsky, right is what strib published. Oddest part is the very very similar but not identical sign in both pics.

I would really love to be wrong but if the Strib is using AI generated images of real events I am truly horrified. Does it looks this way to others?

Never ceases to amaze me how totally zonked I feel after a market. I love peopling but once I get home from selling all day I feel like my social battery has been smashed with a hammer

I'm at Strange Times Market doing embroidery on the spot today til 5! Lots of other great vendors here too. Happening in the Acme Annex at 26th and 28th (across from the old Lawless distillery)

Remember how it used to be that you could only get bland ass red delicious apples and occasionally granny smiths? We're in a real apple renaissance now and it's great.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I have a great halloween costume idea to make a fabric chainstitched version of one of those terrible kid's costumes from the 80's that were just a plastic smock with a picture of a character on them. But what should it be??

I kind of think it would funny to illustrate a modern character but I can't make up my mind on who. Taking suggestions! Right now my best idea is Wayne's World (obviously not a modern character but it is my favorite movie)

Earlier this week I tried to replace the battery in my $30 watch and completely broke it. I ordered a new watch (next time I'll just have a pro replace the battery) but holy shit I feel so NAKED without my watch and not having a watch is so bad for my adhd.

Also, it's surprisingly difficult to find a digital watch with a step counter that's NOT a smartwatch. Well, that's also not ugly as sin (I could have a big plastic chunky boy from the early 00's, but that just won't do)

Sometimes just to prove to myself I'm not crazy I look up how much commercial space rents for in Chicago. And, no, I'm not crazy it is actually cheaper there (in most neighborhoods) than in Minneapolis. Why. WHY.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we must fully integrate and prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable people in our society—children and elders—or we will continue on this doom spiral.

To quote @marciaxthree.bsky.social: a protest ain't a protest unless you're fucking up someone's day.

Mira@thefreeradical.org

if a protest isnt actively disruptive to the broader public & especially the powers that be, then its little more than an officially sanctioned gathering. everyone has to start somewhere ofc, but when protesting consider the whys and hows of making an impact.

Question for people who know: what's the minimum amount one would need to spend on a used car for it to not be a hunk of junk? As in I would ideally want something that won't need expensive repairs within the next year or two?

I got one of these to go with my new smartphone and it's doing a great job of keeping my phone distraction-free. I keep the web and insta blocked at all times, but the card allows for up to 3 five min breaks so I can still use it quickly in a pinch. Highly recommend! dumbwireless.com/products/blo...

I continue to try to treat the internet like it's 2007: social media and general web surfing is something done at home, sitting at a desk. Being out in the world is it's own delight that needs to be appreciated w/out my phone at front of mind.

I'm sure the use of "destiny" and how similar this sounds to "manifest destiny" and the genocide of the indigenous people of the Americas is simply a coincidence

Absolutely not. Humans evolved to live on Earth and there’s no other place that has the right amount of everything we need, like climate, liquid water, mix of oxygen and non-toxic gases in the atmosphere, magnetic field, gravity, puppies, kittens, etc.

Love when bsky folks come in for embroidery! I'm at Audrey Rose Vintage in Longfellow til 4 today if you want to come get your own rebel loon on the spot.

The real trolley problem is that we don’t sufficiently fund public transit. Give it the money it needs so we can serve and / or kill the general public!

Ppl talk about how they see a difference in the way they are treated in a thinner body but tbh in my experience I have not noticed being treated differently today than when I was a fair bit smaller. However, I have noticed a real difference in how well I'm treated when I present more femininely.

I shaved my head in 2021 and kept it short for a few years but now it's back to being kinda long and I weigh the same amount and wow strangers are much nicer to me w long hair and a skirt on.

Private luxury train for intra continental transit. Maybe some genuine couture garments. One of those barrel saunas and a wood fired hot tub.

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

Also I'm buying an old school building and making myself a dream art and sewing studio and then the rest is a community makerspace and reused art supply free store and art studios.

I think an important piece of context here is that around $30k is how much two parents can give an adult child each year, tax free, bc gifts up to $19k aren't taxed. So if you're used to receiving that kind of money it probably doesn't seem like that much, but for most of us it's SO MUCH.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

I don't think $30k is a life-changing amount of money. Median American born in 1980 will have $2m in income in their lifetime. It's a 1% increase in earnings.

I read an essay a long time ago by a nonprofit arts worker who had this kind of familial support and they acknowledged how this created an unfair standard where they could take a lower salary than someone w/out such support, but ...

they were very defensive that it was only enough to make them comfortable, not so much they didn't need to work. Which like, you do you, but most artists I know could live quite happily on a tax free $38k

This is not beautiful to see. This is the most racist democracy on planet earth, and people just expect Black people to sing negro spirituals and "overcome." It's not working. This still happens for one reason and one reason only: white US folk don't hold each other accountable for this racism.

the 30-year mortage--a financially preposterous product that was created wholesale by the government--is de facto rent control for the middle class, yet doesn't attract this kind of shrieking condemnation. curious!

Haven't turned the heat on yet this season and really struggling as to whether today is it bc our house will heat up quickly once the sun comes back out...

I'm tired of hearing how it's going to take decades to fix what the current admin has broken. Dream bigger than fixing the 2015 status quo, y'all.

There is so much work ahead of us, but it's not impossible and it doesn't have to take decades. History has shown many times that we can change things in a snap when we want to.

They took Ilhan’s PASSPORT?! Um

Pat Thompson@pattho.bsky.social

DHS investigators not only took Ilhan’s cell phone, they took her computers, notebooks and her passport! These seem like important details. (You can tell who doesn’t read the full Wall Street Journal article: me.)

A friend asked me to embroider a jacket for her husband's bday and this is what I made, I'm so happy with how this turned out! If you're interested in custom chainstitch embroidery I'll be stitching on the spot at Audrey Rose vintage in Longfellow this Fri, Sat, and Sun.

I feel the city really pulled a fast one calling these groups "violence interruptors" evoking the well known work of Cure Violence in Chicago (subjects of the doc The Interruptors). "Interruptors" in mpls appear to be nothing more than large wandering patrols, not groups doing this complex work

Minnesota Star Tribune@startribune.com

The city’s oversight of more than 100 contracts with violence prevention groups has been so lax that it’s increased the risk of fraud while enabling favoritism in contracting, a recent audit found.

None of these budget bullies are tough enough to admit that after MPD staged its wildcat strike post-GFS, the city made a devil’s deal to buy them off with huge raises, making this budget crisis inevitable (if delayed by Biden’s COVID dough). And we haven’t even hit charter minimum MPD staffing.
