Russia is running GPS-jamming machines in St Petersburg and Kaliningrad, affecting aviation and sometimes shipping around Baltic Sea. Some of my most appreciated work has been localizing these machines in time, space and volume. Here's a rundown of previous geo-work, reversed chronological order.

After a few days of lurking by Edinburgh, Scotland Russian navy support ship VALENTIN RYKOV has stopped just east of Danish strait's chokepoint Fehmarn Belt. 11h earlier she was in company with frigate Neustrashimy and there is a realistic possibility she still is. Shadowed/inspected by NATO.

During night two NATO warships have driven back and forth east and west of the Fehmarn Belt with Russian navy close by. Fehmarn Belt is significant for being a maritime chokepoint and construction of a tunnel underneath, one of the larger infrastructure projects atm in Europe.

Strong indications that frigate Neustrashimy is also present. bsky.app/profile/joha...

The Valentin Rykov has been at anchor in the Fehmarn belt since yesterday at 15:20 UTC. Speculation that she would not be alone appears to be correct. A ship not transmitting AIS-data is ~ 3 NM from Valentin Rykov. This could be the russian frigate Neustrashimy (marked with a red square).

A sister-ship to a previous cable/pipe-sabotage vessel is creeping back and forth across gas pipelines and power cables connecting UK to mainland Europe.

US Navy research (or spy if you will) ship Bruce C. Heezen has been driving around slowly in the spot I refer to as the Russian parking lot since Oct 24. Spot is often used as staging area for Russian missions, it is a small sliver of international waters off the main routes.

German intelligence services wants to share secret data in-between them. Enter Google and €500 million for an 'air-gapped' 'cloud'. A contradiction in terms, unless they plan to build a nation wide new physical network (doubt). On sovereignty: "we need something"

youtube.comSwedish Coast Guard patrol vs. Sentinel-2: which ships weren't on AIS? (19 Oct 2026)YouTube video by John Wiseman

Today's routine coastal patrol by Swedish Coast guard aircraft. Strictly a routine track - no loops or u-turns. The lack in coverage east of Gotland is common. Exercise in the morning? This animation more a proof of concept of capability of my bespoke system than any added intel =)

Shadow tanker MYRA IMO 9336490 is running with a storm heading for Ireland after issuing a distress call earlier today. At 10 knots she will hit Ireland in ~23h lest she turns, but luckily the storm will subside during tomorrow. Falsely flagged, any navy might inspect her anywhere.

Here‘s the trick - #Myra changed flag to Cameroon when departing. Cameroon authorities contacted by myself & German authorities have not yet confirmed this change to be invalid. Despite the Feb 6 ban. With Myra sticking to int. waterways 👉perfect excuse for all Baltic states to let it pass.

Oct 22 a German P8 maritime patrol aircraft made a unique (first ever?) mission where they flew along the fairways leading into Baltic Sea. They spent many laps around a Russian arms shipment (Baltic Leader), some around known shadow tankers and some around unknown causes.

Training or testing sounds likely. Sentinel-1C happened to pass overhead at 05:56 UTC, GNY4569 was at 57.5278° N, 7.4843° E at the time of the image. No spots without AIS within 10 km of its track ±30 min. Nearest AIS ship: KINGFISHER, 17.2 km east and NESEJENTA 26.2 km south-west at the image time.

Today German air force are at it again, using a P8 maritime patrol air craft they are south of Norway engaged in what looks like anti-submarine training. The aircraft type is new for the German Air Force.

Aircraft operated out of RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland. Data for animation above from airplanes.live, various AIS-sources, Sentinel1 (EU), lots of official state data on borders, marineregions etc. Sat data is fresh, but not timesynced. Thanks everyone!

Oops, I was a bit too quick. The aircraft in animation is a German plane, highly likely but not certain, one of their new P8's. Thanks anon for pointing it out in private. Sorry everyone else.

Proof of concept: Got me a live-ish map layer based on open NISAR satellite data. It shows (the blobs) where (roughly) strong ~1.2-1.3 GHz emissions come from, ie often jammers or air defense radars. Simplified, but another situational awareness. A sudden new blob? Alerts.

Unfortunately it also makes it impossible to use this wonderful new source of sat data to study anything in important spots such as St Petersburg (pictured), Baltiysk or many other Russian military installations. Nor most of Ukraine.

Good layers, oh so tasty. Kept on and am producing a territorial and EEZ border layer from official state sources where available and falling authority after that, with references, as far as I am aware no such layer exist yet.

RU has apparently moved numerous warships from St Petersburg to Kaliningrad in recent weeks. This new deployment is thus significantly closer to NATO countries in the #BalticSea. Citing the Swedish Navy, a report says the redeployment is linked to repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on the StPbg area.

Immer wieder nimmt die Ukraine die russische Marine im Ostseeraum ins Visier. Nun liegen viele Schiffe nicht mehr in St. Petersburg, sondern in Kaliningrad.

Project 03182 replenishment vessel "Valentin Rykov" 4750653 is heading out for a likely first ever mission. Commissioned this summer a guess is that she is heading for English Channel to replenish the Russian warship guarding it, I believe frigate RFS Neustrashimy at moment.

75k ton tanker MYRA flying false flag Cameroon is heading out after a long loading Ust-Luga, Russia. Flying a false flag she is up for grabs. Any navy may stop and ascertain her status anywhere on the worlds oceans. She is just one of many slipping trough.

No excuse for the German "we will get tough on shadow fleet"-government. They have have been informed Thilo Maack =) bsky.app/profile/tmaa...

Together with @greenpeace.de I ystrdy warned the Ger authorities about the stateless shadowfleet tanker Myra 👇, carrying up to 70.000 To of oil: no valid flag, no insurance - hence no freedom of passage! Curious what Ger will do in a couple of hours.

Over the last couple of weeks I've built a small hobby tool that compares free radar satellite images (Sentinel-1) with live AIS ship data around Denmark. The aim: find ships at sea that don't show up on AIS. A short thread on how it works 🧵

A sanctioned Russian gunrunner cargo ship made a U-turn into Sweden last hours and has now resumed normal course. Her last trip is with a 20 day AIS-hole in Med (stopped Novosibirsk?) Guess: side-mission to probe NATO attention. Owned by state company MG Flot, Russian-flagged.

🚨 #OSINT Alert: Anomalous maneuver in the #BalticSea. The Russian-flagged general cargo ship ANASTASIIA (IMO 9349291) has executed a sudden U-turn south of Sweden. Notably, the vessel is currently operating under US (OFAC) sanctions. 🧵 1/4

ANASTASIIA, IMO: 9349291 Grounds for guns: Ukraine sanctions, owner company, very similar ship to other known gunrunners, historical ports (Indian, West-African, Russian ports, all known for weapons exports).

Russian TV has released Russian Navy shots of the incident where they fired flares against a Danish Air Force helicopter a few weeks back. What I find most interesting is how operations are described by the TV report. Russia is doing combat missions.
