Was watching Buffy’s Anya backstory episode. Friend asked why I sighed. “She’s not of a sufficiently high social class to have domesticated rabbits that far north in Europe in that century, but the writers couldn’t know, the paper was only presented at a conference yesterday.” Accuracy is fleeting.

More people need to read this. There is no such thing as a "historically accurate Odyssey," because the 'Odyssey' is not set in a real historical time. It is set in the mythic Age of Heroes, not the real-life Bronze Age. #Odyssey #Homer #classics kiwihellenist.blogspot.com/2026/07/odys...

quoteinvestigator.com/2017/07/28/f... tracks down the history of that quote. As is often the case, it evolved over the decades, quoted by anonymous editorial writers with slight changes. The false attributions to Sinclair Lewis seem to have started in the early 21st century.
TIL another one-syllable English word I'd never heard before: salp. (I also learned that salps are really weird animals in several ways.) Salp - Wikipedia share.google/iWhAtTxddzqa...
