One time I sat in the Munster Koach. Horror Books Guy at Bloody Disgusting. Pop Culture Raconteur and Critic at Pop Heist. Host of @scaresshapedus.bsky.social. Austin Film Critics member. π -approved. Always Writing and counting the days until Christmas.
This October I will write 31 essays in 31 days about THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE.
They'll be at @popheist.com for subscribers only.
That's a serialized book-length analysis of one of the greatest horror films of all time from a noted Texan horror critic.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE feels completely timeless except for the one shot where they drive past a theater and the top-billed performer is Gotye. That part is early 2010s as heck.
I like this photo of me that my mother-in-law took but it's so cropped (because of family chaos around me) that it's very much giving "they're just out of frame laughing too" energy, right?
Me: Can't wait to be reminded why I love this movie so much.
Tom Hiddleston: I'm a vampire who's into really old electric guitars.
Me: Ah, there we go.
Also, it's great when a fantasy movie with a pre-industrial European aesthetic just has Black and brown people in the movie with no explanation required.
Nathan Fielder: And do you understand why that's funny?
Elizabeth Holmes: The robots were watching a movie and I thought that was funny.
Fielder: Do you get that they're making jokes about the movie?
Billy Evans (barely listening, watching YouTube at 40x speed): Lizzie I think you have a call.

This is not her scene. It's the Old Man's, and he seems to love that he's stolen it from her. It's a wonderful peek into his mind. @awalrusdarkly.bsky.social's daily dissection of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE continues, for members only.

For all its nuance, the movie's really not that subtle. It starts with Holmes' husband saying they're going to "document everything," and they insist throughout that they're hiding nothing.
Fielder, in contrast, feels like they're hiding EVERYTHING.
This is what the ENTIRE FILM IS ABOUT.
I named a character in MAZYWOOD βPriscilla Stephensβ after my 88-year-old aunt, a 1960s civil rights warrior in ailing health. She came to my book signing in Miami and was surprised to hear her name in my reading. π I am still trying to raise money to help offset her bills.

It's a film about young people in America in 1973 learning that their country doesn't necessarily love them back. @awalrusdarkly.bsky.social's daily dissection of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE continues, for members only.

β'You Can See Everything' is a hilarious, thrilling, fascinating, beautiful piece of art. What it certainly is not is a documentary, and itβs dangerous to pretend that it is,β writes Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. https://bit.ly/4Bk2nDJ
I'm so tired of this. I'm so tired of this idea that we're not allowed to turn cameras on bad people or that documentarians must always be Perfect Avatars of Truth or that the only purpose of a documentary film is Objective Truth At All Times, as if that's a thing that exists in human conversation.
You do not have to like YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING or the people in it or the people who made it, but please stop pretending like it's a failure just because it's not the relentless takedown or linear indictment you hoped it would be.
This week, we're back with our Halloween Week episode as the mighty @sharai.bsky.social joins the show! Which three horror films will she pick for her journey to the Island of Endless Horrors? Find out Thursday at Noon Central!
A fantastic actor who never got the credit he deserved not just for his vulnerability and willingness to commit, but for his range. If you only know him from STAR TREK, go watch his BABYLON 5 episodes and see him play a truly gnarly sci-fi villain.
Safe travels in the Final Frontier, Mr. Koenig.
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I am devastated to learn that Eric Bauza has died. I just spoke with him a couple months ago and I cannot express how joyous it was to have *the Looney Tunes* speaking to *me* and I also cannot express how much it was clear doing the voices brought Bauza joy. www.vulture.com/article/eric...
Kinda wild that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and GILMORE GIRLS both did "Festival of Living Paintings" episodes within like three years of each other and they're both bangers.
Donald Trump lashed out at Bill Maher in a record-length Truth Social post Sunday, calling their latest White House dinner a βwaste of timeβ and telling the *Real Time* host, βDonβt call anymore.β
R.I.P. to Eric Bauza
Out of all the actors who voiced the rabbit, you were the one who came the closest to Mel's original voice. You should've been around for 40 more years to voice him.
CarnivΓ le, HBO (2003)

As 007 taught us, after you go to space you have to bring things back down to earth, and so @michaelvarrati.bsky.social and @brendohales.bsky.social did just that, setting this yearβs Chainsaw Awards in a Halloween corn maze. TW: I will be presenting an award.
