How it feels seeing grant application numbers this year:

🎢 We are seeing a record 7710 proposals – a 60.4% increase since 2026 – for ERC Starting Grants in 2027. ⚛️ Physical Sciences & Engineering proposals are most numerous (43%), followed by Social Sciences & Humanities (29%), and Life Sciences (28%). 🔗 link.europa.eu/d3J8Jw 🧪 #AcademicSky

That, and even among those who have I'm very annoyed at people who cite any number of Persians as counterexamples in the replies or quotes. The guy who trained command module pilots in geology for the Apollo program grew up in Egypt. He's still alive. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farouk_...

he's a piece of shit and what he's saying in the clip is *still* both inaccurate and bigoted, but a lot of you are being rage baited by this caption a little tbh, literally in the clip he talks about how the islamic world used to be more literate than Europe, etc.

Dear Nathan Fielder, you know who else can see everything? Us, because this is the light from the Big Bang and we can see it (and the little dots are other galaxies letting it rip in the microwave)

Congratulations to Dr. Cesiley King on successfully defending her dissertation! A former graduate student of Prof. Johanna Nagy, she is now heading to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for a postdoc, where she’ll work with collaborators of Profs. Nagy and Ruhl!

Plonk a Ukrainian drone factory with enough microchips and a battalion of Ukrainian drone operators into 1936 Spain. What will be served at the Republican victory parade?

Dear STEM professionals: it is okay to have had a STEM education, and make references based on one's STEM education. There's no need to make classics references if you're not classically educated; nobody thinks less of you for that, unless you start making wrong references.

Like you bet I’m going to mention this Orwellian newspeak bullshit to @replsimon.bsky.social when she does a town hall next week (alongside the *don’t say DEI* stuff more generally)

Now they're going to lean and my stomach is sick And it's all in my head, but it's touching my Field now It takes out my topics now Let me go And I just can't look, it's killing me And taking control

Thinking of all my ex-colleagues in Stockholm who worked on IceCube, it must have been a nice day for them.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory – ideated by this year’s physics laureate Francis Halzen – tracks neutrinos that originate in the distant cosmos.

*Youth cosmologist voice* You know what else that can measure astrophysical neutrinos?
