Times are tight all around, but publishing short fiction is expensive. Even if you can only kick in $1 to help keep the magazines you love afloat, please kick in that $1. People who bring you great art deserve to be paid for their work, too.

We're in the final 4 days of the Apex Magazine 2021 Kickstarter and we're $4,393 away from our initial funding goal. The time is now! Let's hit our goal and fund Apex for 2027! www.kickstarter.com/projects/ape...

With so many adults who don't care enough to vote, I'll admit that I'm more inclined to trust the kids who do care enough.

An advocate for lowering the voting age says adding younger voters to the electorate can help reverse civic disengagement. “For us as adults to completely disregard them is a reason why trust in American democracy among young people continues to erode.”

This schnauzer. We get up this morning, head downstairs, walk the dogs, make breakfast, etc. Time comes to get ready for work, so we head upstairs. This dog follows us up and stands there staring at us like we're the dumbest doggy daddies ever.

My husband walks up to her. She dashes for the stairs. He follows. She leads him downstairs and jumps up on the couch, asking to be picked up. Turns out we're the dumbest daddies ever because we didn't CARRY her upstairs with us, and she had to run upstairs to correct us.

Please, everyone who is eligible: Vote even if you live someplace where your vote couldn't possibly make any difference. This election *will* have its validity challenged, and therefore needs overwhelming participation.

I grow more and more convinced that many of these progressive organizations that keep emailing me with hyperbolic demands for money are GOP fronts.

(For those who are wondering if I hit my head or something, facebook recently made it very, very hard to find your older photos, so I went through my timeline and re-downloaded some of the silly things I've made for my friends there over the years, and now I'm subjected you to them.)

Cover reveal! Delighted to have my novelette Dead City Sounds included in this cracking-looking anthology. Dead City Sounds is about music, and endings, and also about a strange virus that makes people think they've stolen everything they own. And look at all those great writers. Exciting!

No firm release date yet, but, obviously, I'll let you know when you can order it. It's currently over 180,000 words of original fiction, and I love each and every one of these stories so much!

On the issue of exclusivity, @diabolicalplots.com has a tool called The Submission Grinder (free to use, tips appreciated) for locating markets and tracking submissions. It also has a feature where when a story is published, you can enter when your contracted exclusivity window ends.

Minor point here, but I recommend caution with any zine - literary or genre - that is requesting an exclusivity window for more than a year. Mostly because this usually suggests inexperience/lack of research on their part, which often doesn't bode well.

John Wiswell@wiswell.bsky.social

What are most valuable are the "first publication" rights. A big magazine wants the exclusive right to be the first to publish a story in English. This exclusivity window is limited. I feel like the window is often for a year?

I just want to add that, although rare, adaptation rights are where the money is. If you can get your story picked up for adaptation into a medium that really does make money (film, television, etc.), those rights are worth tens of thousands of dollars. DO NOT GIVE THEM AWAY FOR $0.08/word.

John Wiswell@wiswell.bsky.social

What other rights exist? Rights to publish in other languages. Your story could be translated. Adaptation rights. It’s rare, but a producer may want to adapt your story into a film, comic, or game. Audio rights. Podcasts like stories. And the most popular: reprint rights.

Some publishers ask for an option on subsequent rights. If you agree to that option, you've pre-sold those rights and can't sell them to anyone else while the option is valid, even if the publication does not exercise that option. Option on anthology rights is a common one.

I, personally, am good with non-exclusive anthology rights. That doesn't prevent me from selling the story as a reprint to another anthology that isn't asking for exclusive rights (which is rare for a reprint). But they do NOT get an option on translations, adaptations, etc.

A good rule for which rights should be in the contract you're going to sign with a publisher is "the rights they need right now." If they're online, they need first worldwide English-language rights. Print publication only in the U.S. and Canada? First North American serial rights. Nothing more.

If the artist were to go out re-selling that illustration and making bank, the title of my story and my byline would be forever associated with it. I can't buy publicity like that. I *want* that. My story could become LEGEND based on a great illustration.

This is the way the publishing industry has always worked. I'm not aware of anyone, anywhere having sued over it. It's a pretty normal way of doing business for us, and I just don't see what problem MRM is purporting to fix with this, beyond simply justifying an overly rights-grabby contract.

I mean, seriously, if I were to, say, show up at a con and discover that an artist was selling an illustration they did of one of my stories, I'd be like, "How much? Do I have enough cash in the bank right now?" This just isn't a problem.

And I've been fond of the Nikumaroro theory since I first saw the case presented in the early 2000s. It really is the theory that best fits the known facts. The stubborn lack of wreckage, even after Bob Ballard's deep-sea examination, being the persistent flaw in the theory.

Some of you may know that I'm an Amelia Earhart buff. I joke that I exist because of her. My parents met at Purdue, where Mom was enrolled only because they were early pioneers in recruiting women into STEM fields, which Earhart helped set in motion 30 years earlier.

With apologies to Tom Lehrer, it's important to keep your career progress in perspective. Whenever I'm feeling down about my lack of success, I remind myself that when H.P. Lovecraft was my age, he'd been dead for eight years.
