“It looks like Saddam Hussein opened a Trump steakhouse, very classy”
Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

Reproductive rights are pretty much the one place where things actually HAVE gotten worse in the last 20 years, and it's noteworthy that it's seemingly also the one place that the kind of nihilists we have on here usually choose to only making passing references to.

He told my roommate he’d be our commencement speaker but then decided to prove he wasn’t running for President in 2008 (lol) swore off out-of-state appearances and reneged so we got stuck with Eliot Spitzer courtesy of Dean Elena Kagan
To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

Like I don't want to say Russian leadership *never* talks about this but the whole thing with the humiliation of the 90s is it's ultimately about the loss of empire and there's an economic angle to it but it's mostly the international prestige/map blob thing that drove them insane

We watched The Fall last night, a 2006 movie. They literally went around the world for the breathtaking locations. The story is sweet, the little girl is a delight, and young Lee Pace was wonderful. Highly recommend. youtu.be/VZtQH_cwTOw?...
Some of these fuckers can’t even engage effectively with people who agree with them presently but used to disagree
I think this is a challenge for liberals, progressives, and the left— how to engage effectively with comfortable and resentful people? Does shaming work? What kind of shaming? What’s the proof of concept? If not shaming, does saying “don’t feel that way, stop it” work? If not that, then what?

this is how you have to treat these guys. with genuine contempt. your genuine contempt makes their smarmy fake contempt look weak and inauthentic. it immediately exposes their game. these guys are just losers who have sworn revenge for every humiliation. humiliate them again

It feels like there's this very strong reluctance among many theorists and Hot Take Havers in politics to admit that historically a HUGE part of politics is not about big brain abstract theory but about ways to control and gain access to who people get to fuck and who gets to "spread their seed."

the basic problem with anarchism as a political philosophy is that it is far, far too concerned with the oppressions of economic systems and the state, but doesn’t really concern itself with the majority of actually-existing oppression, which occurs at a small scale between people
love it when anarchists say this because most "local community" councils irl in places like new england or small rural towns are typically deeply *right wing* and hate immigrants and queer people despite representing a "broad swathe" of the entire population. leftism is supposed to be COSMOPOLITAN.

the novel carrie ends with an ominous note about other children like carrie appearing across the country, with a traumatized nation shocked by the violence and Congress struggling to make sense of it while King meant ESP, we've seen new carrie whites appear in a different form: the mass shooter
a thing about carrie, the novel, is that carrie *is* weird and judgmental and unpleasant to deal with. characters have to suppress their irritation with her, and this is important because it's easy to reach out to someone who conforms to social norms. it's harder to do that to a girl who doesn't.
