October's almost over but I've got a backlog of well-reviewed horror novels on my shelf. Gonna be eating good for a while: China Miéville, 'The Rouse' Joe Hill, 'King Sorrow' Stephen Graham Jones, 'The Buffalo Hunter Hunter' Thomas Olde Heuvelt, 'Hex'

I know it’s hard to keep track of everything but I was shocked this was the first I’d heard about this. Just straight evil.

I don't fuck with any other MCR but this one album is a ton of fun. Great writeup by Tom. I hadn't made the Mellon Collie–era Smashing Pumpkins connection before but that's exactly it.

Wrote about the 20th anniversary of My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade, a no-shit classic rock opus in a weird time for those, and why I couldn't quite see it for what it was at the time.

An instant classic, at least by the low, low standards of Jaguars Junction

Coworkers once again mocking me for my world-changing idea of Big Rice. "Barry, are you talking about Big Rice again?" "Barry, you never say just how big the Big Rice would be." "Barry, wouldn't Big Rice be pretty gross." "Barry, this is the worst idea anyone's ever had." I work with philistines.

Couldn't make it the top image because of copyright but you have to see the first photo in the Instagram embed in here.

After the Knicks win I thought to myself “I don’t really need anything out of sports for a while to be happy.” Since then my three teams all lost their most important player to season-ending injuries.

Is the new Amon Amarth album basically interchangeable with their previous three? Yes. Are they totally predictable by this point? Yes. Is that good enough for me? Hell yeah it is.

I wrote about my J.D. Salinger phase and also a little about my John Buchan phase and also very briefly about how all the Puffin books of my childhood were confident that what a child needed after some nice E. Nesbit was H. Rider Haggard’s She

Huge. Pre-internet, this was pretty much the only way to find out which episodes you hadn’t seen, if any. (Mine was ‘Lemon of Troy.’)

On October 3, 1997, “The Simpsons: A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family,” an episode guide covering the first eight seasons of the show, was first published by @harpercollins.bsky.social.

My pervert bet of the week: that a kick would hit the uprights. Shockingly fun to root for in a crowded Atlantic City sportsbook. (I am of the opinion that gambling is OK if it is inconvenient and grimy.)

Another sicko one was betting the exact number of pitches in a given at-bat. Ray Ratto told me to call the gambling helpline. Very proud moment for me.
