Omarchy is part of new fascism. But it's also a good case study about how little political resilience is built into FLOSS: The libertarian roots have not only made the whole movement ready for the taking by corporations but also by fascists.

I love food youtube videos with titles like "This Immigrant-Owned <regional American cuisine> Shop Sells Out Every Day!" and the interview with the chef is always like "yeah we took <regional American cuisine> and tried adding any spices, people went wild for it".

Modern executives do not want to be in whatever industry their company inhabits. Instead, they just want to run financial tricks and fuck around with the company's stock searching for infinite money glitches. The idea of focusing on a company's primary product is antiquated by today's standards.

Do execs even like TV and Movies?

Been rewatching some old Rich Hickey talks recently and my god, it's so bracing to watch someone describe a process of thinking a lot and then writing a small amount of high-leverage code.

If you have a system that produces bad results, you can either fix/replace the system so that it produces good results OR you can chuck another half-baked workaround on to an ever-growing pile of hacks. It's very not fun being a fix-the-system kind of person in a stack-the-hacks kind of environment!

Anyone have Dropbox replacement you really like? - I specifically don’t want to self-host - It needs to have seamless macOS integration - It needs to work for small teams - I need automated full backup to our Synology NAS Please only recommend anything you personally use and like.

You know, I used to be a skeptic, but with these latest models, AI has really accelerated* my software dev workflow! *shifted an enormous burden of invisible work onto the tiny population of colleagues who still give a shit about quality

“That ship has sailed“ is such a funny phrase to mean “this thing came to pass and it’s like that forever now.” Lotta things can happen to ships that sailed, including coming right back to where they started.

So it's useful to talk about the specific ways in which this argument is dishonest because I think a lot of liberal and left-leaning people are very vulnerable to this rhetorical bludgeon—the idea that you should "listen to experts". But let's unpack what exactly Giggies here means by "experts".

the constant small changes in user interfaces, like font changes, the spacing of elements, the slight shift of color palettes, etc. reinforces the fact that a platform allows you to use it, but is not for your benefit. cultivate rather than ignore this sentiment

So many apps I use have devs w/ Fiddlers Disease now. Stuff randomly changes, then ope, we changed it back next release, or to a new third thing. Indie devs! You're not a megacorp full of Product Guys striving to get promoted, so there's no reason for this! You sell software to users! Get a grip!

Casey Brant@basecase.bsky.social

LLM use and the bad mental habits it encourages are causing software to get buggier, but also even when software isn't outright failing, maintainers are manifesting what I have taken to calling Fiddlers Disease: rapidly changing things around (especially in the UI) with no apparent rhyme or reason.

Genuinely interested how it has happened that very famous/public people don't seem to be embarrassed to say out loud how much they have started outsourcing thinking to flatterybots

It's wild to me that Windows 11 could ship a right-click menu with visible loading times and that didn't result in everyone at all levels at Microsoft permanently resigning from the industry in embarrassment.

I've been a Let's Play enjoyer since they were text and screenshots in forums threads, but something I have never learned to enjoy is watching someone operate the custom character creator. I'm sorry! I know you are doing your riffs, and I am happy for you, but I have skipped ahead to the gameplay.

Lately YouTube has been recommending me a lot of videos of videogame footage with titles like "The Devs Never Expected Anyone to Try THIS!!1!" my friend I guarantee they did. they did expect it. people spend like a trillion hours making a game. the devs did expect that you would do that thing.

Now depending on what it is, they might have *hoped* you wouldn't do it! It's possible that the thing you are doing is something they didn't put there on purpose. But they definitely did know about it.

Every time I look for a new phone game, I get 2 rec types: 1. Great game! but it's >10 years old and I asked for new. 2. A console game ported to phone. I am elderly! I didn't develop touchscreen virtual thumbstick skills as a child and I never will. Where are the good new phone games for phones?

Hijacker: Everyone stop talking. I am armed and I am taking control of this plane. Guy from the Netherlands: Wow, in Netherlands we just purchase a plane if we want one. But typically we will bike somewhere Guy who has been to Japan once: In Japan planes are rarely hijacked. It's a cultural taboo

React is a framework that challenges you to conceptualize your UI as a function of state and then brutally punishes you for attempting to build a UI that is a function of state.

It's because every time someone says a generated asset was intended to be a placeholder, they were lying.

Rory Blank@roryblank.bsky.social

Even if there's no AI in a final game and they just use it to create placeholder assets for development on level design, and it absolutely gets completely expunged before release, I'm just not sure I see the point in doing that, when you could just as easily use a random stock photo.

An underdiscussed enjoyable thing about being an Emacs user is that Emacs screencasts are always like maximum 420p recorded off somebody's insane custom linux setup running on a box they assembled out of parts smuggled out of their former employer which was a local ISP that shut down in 1997.

I'm sorry but almost every dark mode looks like total shit. There are exceptions, and I'm pretty sure what they all have in common is that dark mode was *first*. It seems like taking a light mode design and creating a dark mode version of it is almost impossible. Better to just start from scratch.

I am always asking people—often after they are many hours of work into building a solution!—what problem they are trying to solve, and I am *always* getting dog-hearing-an-unfamiliar-noise face back.

Doing a cost/benefit analysis of bluesky use for myself, and it's not looking good. At its peak, Twitter was a legit positive force in my life, including leading indirectly to the best job I've ever had. As far as I can tell Bluesky mostly makes me mad, and I can't think of much good I get from it.
