I never know what to say when people say I've lost weight. I mean, I have lost a lot of weight, and it's on purpose and healthy. But like... do I say "thanks"? It seems like an observation of fact. I don't know.

It's also complicated by the fact that as a general rule, I don't think you should comment on people's weight unless you really, really know that those comments are welcome.

I am maybe too self-conscious about how I talk to women as someone who now looks more like a man. I don't know. I'd rather be a little awkward than make anyone uncomfortable, though.

I'm actually less concerned about this in person than online, because I don't really pass as a cis man in person. I don't think I come across as terribly intimidating.

Anyway, I'm also trying to be careful about how I talk about this, because I don't want to come off like one of those guys who says shit like "you can't even talk to women anymore without being called a creep". That's not true, and being accused of being creepy isn't what it's about anyway.

Like, those guys would say things to me that, if I were to think them about a stranger, would never in my fucking life come out of my mouth. I'm not above having horny thoughts about someone I don't know, but I'm not gonna tell them.

I try to follow the "talk about choices" advice when it comes to complimenting women I don't know well. I think about what I would've liked to hear pre-transition (and would still like, in some cases). This isn't a complaint. It's just me thinking about how my social position has changed.

We share our love and solidarity with Jewish and immigrant communities and all who are targeted by white supremacy. May we keep fighting antisemitism, like all forms of bigotry, in solidarity with our neighbors. Together we can build a country where all are safe and free.

Today, we remember the 11 beloved Jewish community members who were murdered while praying on Shabbat morning in Pittsburgh eight years ago. May their memories be a blessing and may their families be comforted.

The onions in Uruguay are strong. I grew up in Atlanta, coddled in the soft bosom of the sweet Vidalia onion. "The onion you can eat like an apple!" I always scoffed at that. I had no idea what regular onions were like.

New recipe: Salad I Kind Of Fucked Up 1 large tomato 1/2 medium onion 1/2 tbsp olive oil a pinch of salt pepper to taste First, cut the bad spots off the tomato. Then try to remove the tomato stem completely, fail to do so effectively, and cut off more of the tomato than you meant to. >

In a time of rising antisemitism, we could use an organization dedicated to opposing it. Instead we have the ADL, which shrugs at Sieg Heils and anti-Jewish slurs at the top levels of govt to fixate on this. I grew up a few miles from Brighton Beach, and we called the area "Russian," not "Jewish."

Sam@samd.bsky.social

the ADL is more mad about Zohran calling a neighborhood Eastern European than Elon giving a Nazi salute Zohran derangement syndrome is real

In 1936, Marc Chagall wrote, “Although the world views me as an ‘international’ [artist] and the French consider me to be one of their own, I think of myself as a Russian artist and take pleasure in doing so.” Was Marc Chagall being antisemitic against himself when he wrote this?

My girlfriend asked me to help her shop for clothes online (we're both trans, and I have more experience with women's fashion), and she gave me free rein to be a little hater about the clothes we were looking at. So it was a lot of fun for me (born hater), and she said it was really helpful for her!

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

I was listening to ASMR to sleep last night, and I had a dream that the lady in the video very calmly asked “Do you eat the knees of the broccoli, or do you leave them on the plate?”

This isn't limited to the US, but US Americans are largely such bootlickers about pharmaceuticals. "Testosterone is so dangerous, it has to be prescription only!" My good bitch, do you have any idea how little paracetamol (Tylenol) it takes to kill you graveyard dead?

The thing with people calling Obama "classist" and "elitist" over the Cheesecake Factory thing is that Cheesecake Factory isn't even cheap. It's not like he went after Waffle House.

I don't think suppressing wages while cost of living remains high really counts as "fixing Argentina's hyperinflation crisis", but go off I guess.

Bill@bill-of-lefts.bsky.social

what is an *actual*, *specific* opinion that you hold that will be unpopular on bluesky ? Mine is that Javier Milei is horrible but probably did a better job in fixing Argentina’s hyperinflation crisis than any of his opponents would have

Gifted programs were one of the things that saved my life when I was a depressed kid. I also had the experience of being expected to teach other kids in my non-gifted classes, and it was mostly just frustrating for everyone involved.

Ann Leckie@annleckie.com

"But what do we do with the gifted kids, they'll just sit in class and twiddle their thumbs?" I don't know, I guess it's impossible for them to help their classmates, or work on a project in class that uses their curiosity and also teaches their classmates something. <shrug> Guess we can't!

I was good at programming, for example, but I didn't have the skills necessary to teach the other kids in my programming class how to do it. At best, I helped a tiny bit, and at worst, the kids who I was trying to teach actively bullied me.

Yes, we need more resources to go to schools outside of gifted programs. But schools need better funding in general. If you really care about schools in the US, abolish football.
